I absolutely agree with freshstart, what silly advice. I can't believe you had 3 clueless derms say they won't fill in. I probably have had over 100 cortisone shots thru the years, probably more. I've had a few that dented in and they have always filled in. The norm is actually for them to fill in..If you google cortisone shot atrophy you will see that most of the time they do...
It can take weeks or months...I had one that took abt 4 months to fill in, but it did. Don't panic and give it time!
I had an infected hair follicle that I needed drained. On Feb. 25 I went to a dermatologist who I asked to lance it. When I was on the table he injected me with what he says was .1 cc of Kenalog into the site in between my forehead. I had no idea what was happening. I was not given informed consent. Approx.. 1 month later a dent appeared that to me seems profound. It's now been a little over a month since the dent appeared. I have had 4 saline flushes. I obsessively look at it all the time so it's hard to know if it's getting better. I thought it might be then I went in for another saline treatment and it looked worse, hen around day 5 it almost seemed like it was looking slightly better, but I'm not sure. There is a red mark on top of it too. The doctor swears he will make it right. He said it may be permanant but that he has never not cured anyone from steroid atrophy. He offered to do a filler for free. The only one I would feel remotely safe with is hyrulonic acid but I have concerns, I don't want to risk hurting my vision or risk compromising natural healing that is taking place. I don't want to be a filler junkie, I can't afford it and I like staying natural. This dent makes me feel so ugly. I'm depressed over it. I need hope. Do you think it will fill in? I worry where it's at that it's unfavorable for healing. It's in my natural wrinkle line when I stress my face. I'm 35 and pregnant and wonder if those things are working against me. Should I do more saline? Wait it out? I don't know what to do. I want restoration.
I think hyaluronic acid is pretty safe in terms of the actual material. It is bio-identical to our own natural HA. The glabella area between the brows is a higher risk area, but it's probably a remote risk. Hyaluronic acid would not impede your own healing. If you do get the filler, I think by the time it dissipates, your own tissue might make a recovery.
It has only been a few months, trust me, it will get better. You've seen my photo, I never believed mine would get better but it has. X
Hi everyone,
So i had a keloid on my jaw that was treated with 3 cortisone shots, the last shot was about 5 months ago, the keloid has been gone but im worried about my skin now, where the keloid was its a bit depressed and the skin is thin and red, also the beard is not growing there, will it never grow anymore?
Will the area eventually heal with time or do i have to take any treatment?
Thanks
I have a few bigger keloids in my body, also treated with cortisone injections. After those injections, i used silicone sheetsmore than 6 months over them. They did flatten even more and they are less red now.
Silicone helps to reduce redness of keloid scars. But it takes time, months. You could search good silicone gel (for example: Dermatix, Kelo-Cote) which is intended to improve keloids, since sheet isn't probably really practical in the face.

This is my first post and I know there's other posts about this but I have been getting really depressed and I need to talk to people who understand what I'm going through because none of my friends or family understand. They think it's comforting so say "oh it's not that bad" but that's easy to say when it's not on your face and you don't feel violated by a dermatologist.
I was on accutane for nine months. My final accutane check up was in April (2016) and during that appointment, my dermatologist decided to inject a bump that was under my skin on my cheek. The bump did not hurt, it was not physically visible, you could simply feel a little bump under the skin.
My dermatologist did not tell me there were any side effects to the shot (if I knew it could cause atrophy, I obviously would not have done it), I did not sign anything accepting any risks. That same night, I noticed the skin around that area turned white, it lost its pigmentation. Then a week later, the area began to sink. At first I just thought the skin was just getting darker but it was also starting to dimple. It has been getting worse and worse and my dermatologist kept brushing me off until I started asking for information about why I wasn't informed of side effects or given any consent forms to sign for the procedure. She even entered in her report that she injected a "large, painful, red, and swollen cyst" on my left cheek. LIAR. Finally she agreed to see me (June 2016). She tried to deny that the obvious atrophy was from the cortisone at all, she tried to say it's because there was a bump there, and now there's not. Simple as that. Of course that could have played a part but this dent is SUFFICIENTLY larger than the little bump that was there to begin with. It looks like someone put a cigarette out on my cheek. I am so devastated. I've been suffering on accutane and my skin finally looks amazing and then she deformed me on my LAST VISIT. I feel so cheated and no matter what I do, I can't be proud of my face. I was offered laser treatment (by a different and far more experienced dermatologist) as my best option. Since it was free, I decided to try it. I've had one laser treatment and there is no improvement yet but she says it could take three treatments. They said saline shots won't help.
I just want to know if anyone has had luck with laser treatment or just any luck at all with the atrophy filling in. I'm trying to hold on to some hope that this will go away. Thank you for reading my rant, this has been eating away at me (quite literally). Any response is welcome. Please help
Hey there - I've atrophied from cortisone shots too. One thing that worked for me was saline injections. Not sure why your derm said these won't work, but i'm not surprised. My derm office doesn't offer them either, so I had to go to a different derm (who offered the, but were a little confused / obviously didn't do it that often). So you may need to call around dermatologists to find one who will give you a saline injection.
Also - this isn't gonna be what you want to hear, but some of mine just went away / filled in with time.
Chemical peels / laser treatments should also help too, but they will take multiple treatments, like your derm said.
Love your Blink-182 shirt!
I too have had atrophy after cortisone shots, and they have always filled in. If you read online, most of them do. Sometimes it does take months, but they do fill in. If you look on the archives here there was a woman who had severe atrophy, whole areas dented in and hers filled in, she thought there was no way, but they did.
Whenever I did get atrophy my derm told me the best thing is time. I know it's so hard to wait, but really the chances are better that it fills in, than it doesn't. I've had incidents where derms have f'd my face up too, totally sucks. I really think you should let it be and let time do it's work. Also if you go on Real Self you can see other stories of atrophy that has filled in. You have young skin, I really do believe it will fill in...
A nurse at my derms office suggested a filler but then I was reading that it may not work and may turn deformed. I started reading about subcision- not a procedure I want to go through because it looks invasive and I'd probably have to travel to Toronto (trusted surgeons).
Its been a year since my first injection in that spot- but then had to get another about 2 months ago because a new cyst formed over top of my partially healed previous cyst (which also had a small dent). It seems that my last injection in that spot made the dent a little bigger
Would you you suggest subcision? Anyone go through this procedure?
You could try a hyaluronic acid filler to see how it responds first, they typically last a few months. If you get favorable results then you could look into some of the longer term fillers, otherswise you could try subcision. I dont know how cortisone affects the fat/skin enough to say whether you would respond well to subcision.
Ok so you guys are saying that a filler could work? I read that it could form a donut like look to it due to the forming around scar tissue. I'm hoping not in my case

Subcision is often recommended before fillers because of that exact reason, the filler donuts around the scar tissue. I just have no understanding of what cortisone does under the skin and how you would respond to filler. What does your derm think? Do any dermatologists in your area offer free consultations?
This has happened to me and unfortunately for me they never filled back in on their own. I've had pretty good success with fillers...particularly Juvederm.
Edited to add: Oh, and I heard similar things about lasers. They never really helped, either. This isn't said to bring you down...it's letting you know I'm in a similar situation as you. You might want to check with your derm or a plastic surgeon about fillers.
You look stunning Congratulations!
