maybe if it doesnt go away in a few days...

im thinking if i should just wait a while and see what happens, or go to the derm tommorow and get it injected ASAP while its still not a fully developed cyst.

I wasn't sure if you were talking about the birth control or Accutane at first, because birth control also comes with its risks and you don't know which brand will actually work for your skin.

Accutane is badly talked about in the media, so that's why I was scared to take my first pill, but when I noticed I was still alive and the oiliness of my skin started to diminish I couldn't wait until it was time to take the pill again.

Sometimes I feel like I've got the flu when muscles get achy and my upper and lower back are just feeling uncomfortable, but that almost always happens due to a bad position I was sitting in or something stupid like that. When I am Physically active It makes me feel a ittle better. It's weird.

Overall, my dosage (40mg on 140lbs) has been working for me very well. My only con is that I hate having dry mouth and I have to maintain my hydration.

I'm in month 5 of accutane and I still get cysts. I'm not upset though, because the improvements still outweigh the 1 pimple I have.

I started to see the benefits of the medicine later than most people and it was confusing for me at first why did it have to happen to me, but looking back I understand that everyone reacts differently due to so many reasons I won't get into detail about. It's an interesting experience to see the Magic happen before your eyes while you do nothing. My problem was having a hard time to adapt to not constantly trying to "help it" work better with supplements, diets and topical creams. Now I don't know how I'll do without accutane.

I'm definitely enjoying my life more though...

I believe that a lot of the negative press stems from very aggressive law firms that have a vested financial interest in suing Roche and other generic accutane makers. They stand to make a ton of money from those lawsuits. For me Accutane was a life saver. I just wished I had started it earlier, but I was like everyone else and overly fearful of all the purported side effects. I could have saved myself from a lot of heartache and scarring if I had done it sooner.

Update:

So what you see here is what you get. They have turned into hard lumps and it's been a week so I don't think they are going down anymore and in about a week it's going to come back again... Don't mind the flaky skin and other minor imperfections- this lighting magnifies, it actually doesn't look bad in the daylight with makeup. Bearable

I guess I'm like the people that I've only read about on these forums- the ones who have had to get multiple shots

Yah I'm moving up to 40 mg in 10 days then after that I go up to 80 for 3 months I think. Not quite sure

Nooooooooooo :( take a good look at bottom left It's coming back. I called it. I was having such a good week too. I got this done about a week and a half ago so that means that if this comes back full fledge in a week chances are my derm isn't gonna be too keen on doing another shot. What is she doing wrong?? :( should I suggest she drain?- she drained last time but I'm thinking she didn't get all. Any suggestions?

Hey!

I got a shot today for my not-so-little cyst ... I'm in month 5 of my accutane treatment and I cant believe I still get them. Im hoping it doesn't come back, but if it did i would get it injected again. I don't think there is a limit. Draining sounds good too, but I've never had it done and I'm not sure if it's the more effective approach.

Hi Krissy,

I've been following your progress. I had wanted to comment a few times, just wasn't sure what advice to give. I consider myself a cortisone junkie, I get them all the time. I can't stand having something sitting on my face. I'm on spiro now, and it seems to be slowing things down, but still going to get shots.

I'm not exactly sure what your derm is doing wrong. Is she just shooting it one area? I know when I've gotten a big cyst my derm would shoot it in a couple of places, not just in one area of the cyst. In the pics it looks like when your cyst does shrink it has many different areas to it.

I haven't had many cysts refill after a shot, but once in awhile I do. The most I got shot in one cyst was 3 separate occasions, 3rd time was a charm. My derm wont shoot it more than 3 times in a certain amount of time bc of atrophy. I've gotten a few shots that atrophied but they were small and always healed themselves. I have to tell you , even tho I had small areas of atrophy, it does suck. My skin would be sunk in with a gray color and would take weeks to go back to normal. You need to be careful about that.

I actually use 2 derms. One gives the best shots and the other doesn't. The bad shooter prescribes the spiro to me. The last couple of times I needed shots I went to the "bad shooter" only bc I needed refill of my scrip and other time bc it was over holidays and other place wasn't open. I vocalized to them how the shots never seem to really work when I get them done, and that I go to another derm for shots. It ended up that they like to use the bare minimum strength of cortisone bc they find it usually works. Now that they know that strength doesn't work for me, they upped it up and the shots actually work now. They wont go above a certain strength no matter what so I feel safe about not having to deal with atrophy.

You can discuss with your derm about what strength shes using. I wish I knew what strength my derm uses but I don't :(. If she wont shoot the cyst again maybe ask her for short course of prednisone. Its not my favorite med to take, but it does work awesome. Its not something you want to take for a long period of time, but maybe just to kill that sucker already. Just like Tracy, I do love Keflex. I had an infected cyst once and Keflex worked like a charm. You can ask your derm about that if you or her aren't comfortable about prednisone.

I wanted to say I love your attitude. I think you're handling this really well. I always fall apart and get hysterical about my cysts, which does zero good. Keep up the great attitude. Sooner or later that thing will DIE!! Overall I think your skin looks great, your cheeks look beautiful. I think Accutane will work great for you..just think in a few months you wont have to worry about this crap!!

I really enjoyed reading your reply :) I always thought I came off as a freak posting about my cysts- I guess in my head I'm not dealing with it as calm and cool as I'd like but I am trying. As for the injections yah I will ask her if- she did warn me when we first started this that it may take more then one. It's just frustrating having these things- especially the big one on my face. Good thing I have an understanding boss- I just tell him ok I have to go get another shot and he lets me leave for a couple of hours. I've heard of this spiro but never thougt about taking it, I awayd thought accutane was higher up then spiro.

My derm just injects in one place and fills it up- I find it realy weird the way it partitions itself into 3 separate pieces 4-7 days after the injection. Someone brought up that maybe it's 3 cysts in one but I'm not sure. I think it's just that she's not putting enough in and/or needs to drain it more first.

Anyways I contacted a Toronto office- if I can't get head way here then I'll travel there

Thanks for your reply and thanks for the compliments :)

hey just wanted to say i have been thinking about you and i sure hope you can get those cysts injected again and that they go away this time. stuff like this can really damage your self-esteem so much. dont ever feel bad for complaining or anything you are the one that has to deal with it on a daily basis. it does get really hard but the best thing i can tell you to do is to just carry on with your life as much as you can for now. one day this will all be a distant memory

so your derm doesnt think any of this is hormone related? i am just asking because of where the cysts are on your face. the thing with accutane is that if its a hormonal issue it will clear you up but once you stop taking it then it will come back. my derm has me on spiro and it works so well for that. i do hope the accutane will clear you though and you will be done with this crap but if not then you know there is something else out there.

hugs!!

I read that too- it being hormonal so I have been back on birth control for the past month hoping that will scare away anymore cysts that decide to come around.

I never ever in my life have gotten these on my face and it came right before my company had a huge charity gala event. I knew about it for 5 months and I think because I stressed hardcore a month before the event these things popped up!

Actually my profile picture is a picture that was taken at the event lol I actually had a good time and shouldn't have stressed myself into an oblivion because look what came of it.

Thanks for the great supportive advice! All of you :)

I find it very funny that my derm didn't even think of the possibility that it can be hormonal. And hopefully if it is hormonal my current birth control pills will help.

Hi Krissy,

If you're a freak about posting about your cysts..then i'm a total freak!! I whine about them all the time, just ask Tracy! lol. Tracy has helped me thru many of a bad time! She is the best!!

It is so annoying that a lot of derms don't bring up hormones. I'm 47 and have been dealing with acne for 30 years. I could manage it well until I hit 42, that's when the cysts started. Finally at 47 I was prescribed something for my hormones. I sure hope it was worth the wait, it appears its finally maybe starting to kick in after 4 months, keeping my fingers crossed!

It is so great that you have understanding boss. When I was working I had same thing. It was so great to be able to run out and get shots, or leave work early. Cheers to understanding bosses!!

From the picture it actually looks like its healing. It doesn't look as red or as inflamed. It kind of has that look that it might scab and heal.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it starts to heal and this can be a distant memory! Have to say again, besides the pesky stupid cyst, your skin looks really nice!

yeah it really almost make you go crazy because its all you think about and then you have a hard time enjoying anything because you are so preoccupied with it. i feel for you and i pray that things will get better soon. i hate cystic acne i think its like the devil!

have you had good luck with birth control in the past? i always broke out way worse on birth control it really screwed me up.

i'm sure the stress didnt help that is for sure. stress can do crazy things to our body. one thing i noticed with being on spiro is that it doesnt matter how stressed i get now i dont get the breakouts like i used to but i almost believe that my hormones were so out of whack that any little thing could have set them off ya know?

one question for you you said you never got cysts on your face until now? is that right? if so that was really fast that you got on accutane. i am just wondering because its normally so hard to get my own derm took years to offer it to me and that was only as like a last resort if say the spiro didnt work.

are you putting any bp or anything on those cysts? i think the bp will help bring that down especially the 10% bp its pretty strong. i do think they are looking better now and that you do have some amazing skin. i dont see any scarring at all which is so awesome

sending you hugs today!!

Hey guys

I haven't posted in a couple of days and I just wanted to say thanks again for thinking of me :) I remember when I kept posting in here and nobody would respond.

I will post a picture later but no big improvements I don't think. I still think it's gonna come back- and when I see the derm I'll ask about the medication spiro and she what she has to say.

I'll keep posting updates not only for me but for others in this situation so that they can relate etc...

For the past few days I think my feelings have been neutral but I think that's because they are in between the flattened (post shot) and active stage (full fledged inflammation) and I'm sure once they come back I will be running around trying to get them down again lol

Will post a picture later today :)

Hi ya Krissy,

Although the cysts are still there, it does look like you're having improvement. The area around the cysts look like they've healed very nicely. One of my first cysts years ago was quite the doozy. It was on my cheek and I got a shot. Back then I knew nothing about cortisone shots, I didn't know I could go back and get more shots if it didn't work. The shot brought it down some, but I had a nice size lump for over 2 months. I couldn't stand it. It just sat there and did nothing. One day it formed a head and It finally popped. Omg I cant even tell you how happy I was...I couldn't believe the thing was finally gone, it was such a relief! I couldn't stop looking in mirror and feeling the spot, I just couldn't believe it was gone. I cant wait for you to have the same feeling!

Do you plan on going to derm again soon? Or just wait it out? How is Accutane going? Hoping its going smoothly!

Hey thanks for replying. The thing that sucks is that I know it's going to come back because everyday I notice it getting bigger by just a smidgen- she had drained some of the bigger one so I don't think that one will come back to be as big.

One a more positive note I have been very much enjoying the past 2 weeks that I they have went down no matter how short lived it is.

A coworker of mine says don't be so negative (when I told him that I know it's coming back) but it's hard not to say they are not coming back- it's kinda like you just know these things after you've gotten like 3 shots

The Accutane is going well. I am moving up to 40mg a day from 20 in a couple of days.... I'm kinda scared but not.

I plan on seeing the dermatologist the second these things get full blown again which I suspect will be in about a week even though she scheduled me for an appointment on February 16th- which I think was a hint to not come in before then but I will call them if need be regardless.

And I hope it comes to a head- that must have been a glorious moment for you :) 🙂

Again thanks for the response! I haven't been on here for a couple of days

NOO. Just leave it. Please just leave it. It will go away in a few days!

Don't risk it.!

maybe if it doesnt go away in a few days...

im thinking if i should just wait a while and see what happens, or go to the derm tommorow and get it injected ASAP while its still not a fully developed cyst.

Your thinking is right. Go and get the shot while its small. I've gotten the shot for big ones that won't go down but the ones that actually went down were the ones that weren't fully developed. She won't add much-just enough to take it down- if they know what they are doing.

Hi Krissy,

Looks good! I think one more shot will do the trick! It looks smaller. Accutane dryness stinks, but at least you know its kicking in!

Just think in a few months you wont have to be dealing with this!
