I have a redspot with a huge yellow head. I will not touch it though. Obviously popping hasnt been working so Im just gonna leave it alone. I am also gonna moisturize with vaseline.I have a similar type of spot on my chin. I've been having a hard time not touching it as well! Haven't had one of these buggers in months.... But we know messing with them only makes it worse, right????? 😉
I have a lot of them
Hopefully your derm will give you a good skin care plan on Thursday. You might also ask the doctor for recommendations for a cleanser and moisturizer, since you haven't found products that work as well for you as you'd like.
I couldnt help myself today and I popped that yellow head. I know it doesnt make it better but I think its totally disgusting to leave it there. Thatd be like if I have a buger running down my nose and I didnt whipe it
He will probably give wont give me good advice for cleansers. He will probably just tell me to use anything from the drugstore
I have a list from Face Reality that lists common makeup and skincare products as to whether they are ok to use or not. I could give you a few suggstions from the list if you'd like (its a hard copy, so I can't post or email it). Let me know and I will look at their list and give you a couple of suggestions.
That would be fantastic if you can please do that for me. Do you know if prescriptives virtual matte foundation with spf 15 is appropriate for someone with extremely sensitive skin? What are examples of make ups which are not appropriate? What are examples of make ups that are? Thanks Kim!
I use the Prescriptives Virtual Matte with no problems - although it doesn't make Face Reality's recommended list. I'll have to ask why. I think it might be because it contains algae, but i think that is pretty far down the ingredient list (and apparently some forms of algae are ok, but I usually avoid it).
Here are a few cleansers and moisturizers that Face Reality says are safe for acne prone skin. I'll just give you some that I think you can get at the drug store: (they say no to cetaphil, BTW). If you can't find at least one of these you like, I have my own list I have been creating from Paula Begoun's new product database (you have to pay a registration fee too search the website, which I have done - so I can look up products there too)
From Face Reality's list:
Cleanser:
Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming cleanser
Aveeno Cleansing Pas
DDF - any of their foaming cleansers
Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser
Moisturizers:
Aveeno radiant skin moisturizer
DDF oil free ultra light moisturizing dew
Neutrogena healthy defense moisturizer
Olay regenerist night moisturizer
Olay Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer SPF 30, Sensitive Skin
I have a few other cleansers on my list. I haven't started a moisturizer list though:
Clean and Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser, Oil Free
Dove Sensitive Skin Foaming Facial Cleanser
Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser
Olay Foaming Facewash for Sensitive Skin
I cannot use aveeno. In fact, I have used that Aveeno Ultra Calming Cleanser. I really didnt like it. I gave it a good two months and it just didnt agree with me. DDF- I never heard of it. Is that on line? I am currently using a Clinique Cleanser. I am giving my face a break from that CeraVe because its very drying. If it doesnt work, then I will possibly look into that neutrogena product.
Moisturizer wise, I dont like dove. Their sensitive skin cleanser didnt like me either. I didnt consider it mild enough. It had a scent. I dont know if the moisturizer is the same way. Ill see if I find any of those moisturizers today at the pharmacy in my therapists building.
SO FAR and I emphasize the words so far, I plan on using the aquaphor at night only. Hopefully, I wont quit after two weeks It makes my face look greesy. It is helping with keeping my skin hydrated. It isnt really helping with the dryness though so I am glad I have a derm appointment. I am so excited for this derm appointment I cannot sleep. I went to bed at ten and slept until 3 and now Im posting here on acne.org
Hi Molly, after reading your responses in the Don't Wash Your Face Too Often topic (along with a couple others), I decided to read your log. I feel your pain. Acne is so frustrating and people don't realize how much it effects your life, unless they have been there themselves. For several months I did not even want to leave my house at all.
I do have a concern with you picking your acne. Do you wash your face (or the area immediately around) after you have popped them with an anti-bacterial cleanser? Have you tried leaving them alone and spot treating with a face mask containing sulpher (or the acne cream you were prescribed)?
Also, the frequency that you change products and the use of too many different products could be counter-productive. When you change, and change more than one product at a time you won't be able to determine what is making you break out. You mentioned a possible dairy allergy--have you tried organic milk and yogurt? Maybe its the hormones that you are reacting to. How is your diet otherwise? Do you get fruits, veggies, and good fats everyday?
It could very well be a product you are using that is a skin irritant. What do you use to wash your clothes with? Breaking out around your mouth could be a reaction to toothpaste (use baking soda or look for a natural toothpaste without fluoride), or a reaction to lip balm or something else that you sleep in. Have you ever tried to go for a few weeks without wearing make-up to see how your skin reacts (I know this can be hard!). Do you wear perfume? Body lotion? Have you tried using a shampoo made for babies or something that has no added colors and fragrances? Are you still using castile soap? Have you tried using that to wash your clothes with? You can look on Dr. Bronner's website and figure out all kinds of uses for castile soap. My dry, cracked hands healed just with starting to use this instead of regular hand soap.
As I stated, when I cut out beauty care products with synthetic chemicals my acne not only got better, but my mood about it changed. My face no longer hurts. It's not dry anymore. It doesn't itch. I left my camera in my client's car, but after I get it back I'll take some after shots.
I use the regular TerrEssentials products (with essential oils of organic sweet orange°, organic lavender°, organic lemon° and organic bergamot which could be a problem for some people who may be allergic to citrus, but lavender and bergamot are antibacterial--lavender calms/soothes and bergamot has a drying effect for existing acne), but they do have a fragrance free line. If you do have an allergy to citrus, try contacting them and see if they can give you the fragrance free with the lavender and bergamot oil added in (explain your reasoning to them)
The cleanser ingredients: Organic aloe vera juice°, organic olive oil° castile soap, organic extracts° of organic calendula°, organic althea°, organic alchemilla (lady's mantle)° and organic curcuma longa°.
The toner: Extracts of organic camellia° (green tea), organic witch hazel°, organic calendula°, organic althea° and organic alchemilla (lady's mantle)°.
The lotion: Organic aloe vera juice°, extracts of organic calendula°, organic camellia° (green tea), organic alchemilla° (lady's mantle), and organic althea°, cold-pressed organic sunflower oil°, extract of organic echinacea° , organic karite (shea) butter°, organic beeswax°, cold-pressed organic jojoba oil°, mineral blend, sea plant extract, organic soy lecithin°, wildcrafted murillo bark extract.
I found an old topic where people were looking at this company's products but were concerned that they were "too natural." At first I did use the line with BP and AHA, with no negative effects. I then stopped using BP with no breakouts. Then I stopped AHA, no breakouts. I use the cleanser and lotion in the morning, and the cleanser, toner, and lotion at night. I estimate that the products last for 3 months.
Okay, this is getting to be a book, so I'll shut up now
^lol I just got back from my derm appointment and Walgreens. My dr said he doesnt think changing products makes any difference. I just have the genetic make up for acne. He put me on a sulfer cream that I am gonna use twice a day. Its called Clenia cream and the antibiotic in pill form is called cefadroxil and I only have to take it once a day; its 500mgs. In six weeks I have another follow up appointment (March 6th) to see how things are going and if I am making improvements.
I havent tried any of that stuff you suggested. Maybe I just need to somehow force myself to stop popping my pimples and to stop obsessing with looking in the mirror. I have an obsessive personality.
Food wise, I eat a lot of sweets. I love chocolate, ice cream, cake, and if I eat chips, they are only the baked kind. For breakfast, I either eat heart to heart cereal or a granola bar. I know I should eat more but I dont. I think I am gonna start eating an assortment of frozen berries for breakfast. I also eat a lot of chicken sandwhiches with celery, cranberry, and other stuff; its already made and its from trader joes. Sometimes I eat noodles with carrots, peas, and bell peppers. For dinner, I will eat fish sticks or something small. I am not hungry much when dinner rolls around. I am still full from lunch. I have a weird work schedule and my lunch break isnt until 1:30. Actually, its a fifteen minute break so I have to eat all the food in fifteen minutes. I could wait for my half hour break at 3:00, but I do not want to do that. That is too long. Anyway, most people eat lunches at noon or before that and I eat mine late. Thats probably why Im not hungry at dinner time. I always eat something but its usually something small.
Im gonna start only washing with a cleanser at night (luke warm water in the mornings) and see how that goes. I dont think it will help but its worth a shot. I am willing to take that risk.
I'm glad you got to see your derm today! I hope the stuff he prescribed this time will help out with the current situation...
I definitely think you should try to stay out of the mirror if at all possible, I know how hard it is. I stopped looking in mirrors altogether when I had my first major breakout, and only looked in the morning and evening when I applied the medicine from the derm, any other time, its pointless, you know its going to make you feel badly. My days went alot better, outta sight outta mind ya know. Good luck sweetie, I'll keep a close eye on your log to see how its going
EDIT: I just searched google for Clenia because I'd never heard of it, acne.org had several good recommendations about it....some said it worked quickly, I can't wait to hear about your progress!

Sometimes I disagree with doctors (just ask mine!!), and I think your derm should have been a little bit quicker to warn you about jumping from product to product and using so many at a time. When you irritate the skin it is more likely to break out. Plus if you start using 3 new products on one day, one product could be causing skin irritation (while the other 2 are perfectly fine), and you would have a hard time isolating which one is irritating your skin. Itching, burning, redness is a sign of irritation. Changing products is not why you break out, but it could make it worse.
I eat a lot of the stuff that others here have cut out sugar, chocolate, dairy, wheat, etc), but I do try to get fruits and veggies into my diet everyday and eat organic whenever possible. I also don't buy things like cookies in the store--I make my own so I can control the quality of the ingredients. I've cut out artificial preservatives as much as possible a couple years ago. Have you tried making a smoothie with frozen fruit and veggies like baby spinach, cucumber, and celery? I substitute 1 meal a day for a smoothie and I think it has helped with my skin, and plus I've lost some lbs. in the meantime. I think the fruit and veggies help with my overall digestion. At first its a little weird, but I use blackberries or blueberries to make it a nice color. I was having such good results that my sister down in FL has started doing it. Plus it usually keeps me full for a long time. Have you ever had official food allergy testing done? How often do you wash your pillowcases?
I was at the end of my rope in regards to acne not even 6 months ago. I didn't want to leave my house, and it was even to the point where I was thinking about turning to a prescription product, something I have been adamantly opposed to for myself. Making simple changes and changing my outlook has made a huge difference. I stopped obsessing which was a HUGE deal for me. Then I started my current regime and it was one of those "ah ha" moments. Hopefully this new regime given to you today will be yours. Just remember that you have a whole team here cheering you on, and that are here for you!

Awww, you are so supportive! Thank you and I love your words of wisdom about how you read some people here had the sulfer cream work well for them quickly 🙂

The thing I usually change is the cleanser. I also sometimes change my moisturizers.
I also dont buy cookies at the groccery store. Since I have an obsessive personality, I tend to eat the whole bag of cookies in one day! I did that once and I havent bought cookies from the groccery store since. I do have to have my double rainbow coffee ice cream though.
I dont know if I can mix vegetables like spinish and celery with berries. That doesnt sound appetising at all
No I never have had a food allergy test done. Maybe I should
I have about six pillow cases and I wash them once a week. Although lately, I have been sleeping on a contour pillow from macys that already comes with a pillowcase
Thank you too for your support! I am really enjoying reading your posts here 🙂
Good luck with the new medications!!Thank you! I know youre not gonna wanna hear that I have changed my day time moisturizer but Ive changed it to Neutrogena for sensitive skin. At night, I am gonna use the aquaphor on my lips only.
I think that is probably a good change. Just don't change anything else until you give the current regimen some time to work!
omg Im getting anxious again. Im looking at the inactive ingredients on clenia (the sulfer topical) and the 8th ingredient is Isopropyl Myrristate which rates a four or five in comedogenicy! It also contains fragrance which is the sixth ingredient! I am gonna use it because my dr gave it to me but Im freaking out and worried I will break out worse

Maybe its far enough down the list that it won't be a problem? I really don't think derms pay as much attention to comedogenic ingredients as we do around here! The clindamycin my doctor gave me a couple years ago also had a pore clogging ingredient (which did end up clogging my pores).

There are twenty five inactiv ingredients. Yeah it doesnt seem like derms do. Maybe its because they are not the ones actually suffering from this horrible skin disease. What was the name of the ingredient that ended up clogging your pores?

I know the smoothies don't sound appetizing, but you add just enough veggies (maybe a stalk of celery, 1 handful of spinach and 1/3 of a cucumber). For fruit I use frozen peach slices, maybe 1/4 of an apple or pear, 3 or 4 strawberries, a squeeze of lime, some water, about 2-3 tablespoons of no sugar added fruit juice, and honey to taste. Sometimes I mix it up and add about 1/4 cups of oatmeal, milk instead of water, and a tiny bit of coconut milk. Then at the end I throw in 3 or 4 blackberries or a small handful of blueberries to make it a nice purple color. I also do a straight veggie one with cucumber, spinach, water, parsley, cilantro, lime juice, and honey--very refreshing! I actually look forward to them now. And my husband who is picky eater #1 says they are good. Someone else has a big post on here about it, so maybe look to there for some ideas.
Surprisingly, lotions for "sensitive" skin made my breakouts worse. I tried them from ProActiv, Olay, Neutrogena, and several others and they all made me break out. I think it may have been the sunscreen ingredients included in the products. Maybe by next summer I can find a good sunscreen product.
Maybe try changing the 1 or 2 pillowcases your face usually lays against every 2 or 3 days. I know that has dramatically improved breakouts for some people.

I'm going to go all conspiracy theory here....but do dermatologists really want us to get rid of our skin problems? What would they do then?
Okay, conspiracy theory over, I'm going to bed.

I am gonna go groccery shopping tomorrow. I will see what I can find. Their vegetable section is aweful though. I cant go anwhere else though because its the cheapest and because Im going after work. I finish work at 7pm.
This neutrogena for sensitive skin doesnt contain spf. Thats why I bought it.
Not all derms care but my derm is very caring. He was actually incredibly therapeutic today. Even though, he has given me almost everything to try, he is continuing to work with me. He couldve just been like, no find a new derm or something 😆 but hes nice.

That sounds YUMMY!!! I can't do veggie smoothies, I'm not a very good vegetarian, but that fruit one sounds great...passing the picky husband test is a good sign. I never even thought of using peaches and pears
