My dad figured out a theory as to why Ive been breaking out horribly, besides this horrendous weather. Ive been turning my heater on to sixty degrees all day without turning it down. Mind you, I live in a 511 square foot apartment. He thinks turning on the heater this high is drying out my skin. What do you think? Does this sound like a reasonable theory?

It could be contributing to it. I know heat always aggravates my skin. I have to wash my hair is lukewarm/cool water so that hot water doesn't get on my face too much, otherwise it goes beet red and tightens up (yuck!).

Hi Molly!

I just wanted to wish you luck on your new products! I really like sulfur for spot treating. I find that changing around products can really mess up my skin. I have sensitive skin as well and the more I switch things in my regimen, the more irritated my skin becomes. I'm smarter about it now and I haven't switched products since I've been on Accutane. Try and stick to this regimen!

I can totally relate to the popping problem. I have to limit my time looking at myself in the mirror. Not popping/picking has really helped me out.

Its usually hot+humid that leads to breakouts. Drying your skin might be adding to the irritation, but I doubt its leading to your acne breakouts. I would bet that going on and off the spiro is a major reason for your current flare - thats a lot of hormonal shifts in a short period of time. You were doing ok when you first started and you were on the azelex, right? (or at least better than you are doing now?)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your new regimen!!!

I break out horribly every winter. I break in a lot of large pimples the rest of the year. The rest of the year I do break out everyday, but they are small pimples, not those juicy yellowheads. The winter rolls around and Im fucked. The only reason I stopped spiro is because I was going to bed at 8:00 or 8:30 and I couldnt keep my eyes opened. Plus I didnt have a period for 35 days. Before it was always a 28 day cycle. I also felt constantly dehydrated even though Id drink a lot of water and I had major migraines. That is no fun at all!

My derm told me that spiro worked for most people who he had try it. They saw results within a month or two. I read on I think it was drugs.com that antidepressants can make spiro less affective and I experienced it being less affective so whats the point in taking the drug. To me antidepressants are more important than that other pill. Antibiotics should help me better

I think having the heater on so high in a small area can dry your skin out because there's no humidity. Our house is 70 degrees (68 when my mom gets all sneaky on my dad and changes it), and my house is not that big. It's so so dry in here and I know that it makes my skin drier. My parents are going to get a humidifier installed that circulates through the whole house and I can't wait for some relief. Maybe you should think of getting a humidifier for your room when you sleep at night?

Thank you for wishing me luck and for the encouragement about the sulfer. That makes me feel better

Do you know how much humidirers cost?

Sulfur's an effective ingredient. It's weird, I've used products with fragrance and comedogenic ingredients for years without problem, but some products with no harmful ingredients have bugged my skin. The product your derm gave you could very well be okay for you skin, despite the ingredients. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the case!

I can see it working already. Of course my skin isnt fixed yet but you know, it is already starting to work. I do notice a difference today. My face still itches like crazy though

Yeah, I dont even understand what the ingredients are when I read them. Its like greek to me when I read it. What on earth is isopropil palmitate  Theres so many ingredients with weird terms like that and its very overwhelming. Sometimes theres like fifty ingredients listed on a cleanser or something and I dont even know what most of them are

Hi Molly!

I was just catching up with your log to see how you made out at the derm appt. yesterday. It sounds like he's going to work with you until you're happy with your skin! I love when they listen to your complaints and concerns and are really interested in getting your skin cleared up!

I have a humidifier in this office of mine. The rest of the house doesn't seem to be too dry because of the showers, kitchen cooking, wash, etc. but I do notice my eyes tend to feel dry and sometimes my skin too if I'm in this room a lot at night. The one I bought is an ultra-sonic, cool mist type, by Vicks, that I bought from Target. Check out the different ones before you purchase yours, if you decide to buy one. Some have mineral deposit filters so if your water has a lot of mineral content, the fine mist left behind won't come out as really really fine white powder, which gets all over everything. I use distilled water in mine. It's a little one, good for this size room, holds about a gallon or so, and I only use it when I feel it's too dry in here. It's also great when you have a cold because it keeps your nasal passengers moist.

Good luck on your new regimen. It sounds like it will be a good one for you since it seems to be calming down your skin. Keep us posted how it works! :D

You know, you might break out more in the winter here due to the rainy/humid weather. I know my skin tends to break out more during the rainy season here. My skin was at its worst two winters ago when we had rain nearly every day in March and through the first half of April. I would sit there on humid BART trains and just feel my pores swelling up....

Thank you for reading my log. You have been such a sweetheart to me! I love reading your pms and comments on the boards

Yes, I am so glad he is working with me instead of against me. I lot of drs (not just derms) dont even care about their clients/patients. I know that first hand as I work in a nursing home. Most of the drs are great but theres this one dr. Hes an idiot! Someone will be like, "My foot hurts" He goes, "Let me check your heart" Then he is out the door. If someone has a health issue they want to discuss with him, he just leaves. OMG anyone can do that! It doesnt take a bunch of years in medical school to learn that

Thank you again lol for giving me info regarding humidiers. I will look into it. My parents also want me to buy a water filter. They dont like the fact that I wont drink tap water. They dont want me getting cavities and bottled water doesnt have floride in it

Yes thats my thinking. I actually dont break out badly in April. I better not because I was born in April 😉 I usually start breaking out horribly between october and november and the moderate acne stops in late March.

Oh I will never forget that constant rain we had in March and through the first half of April. That was the most amount of rain Ive ever lived in. I hated it! I love sleeping to the sound of the rain though. Its music to my ears! I just dont like being out in it. Good thing we dont live back east where it snows all the time, blah. I like visiting places where it snows but I am glad I dont live in it. I think I better stay here in CA. Opps I forgot, I have never lived anywhere else 😆

I hope so! Ive had acne almost half of my life. Im almost 24 years old and Ive had it since I was twleve or thirteen, I dont remember which. I think it was thirteen because thats when I started my period. He reassured me that I will probably outgrow acne by the time I am 30. He said woman usually outgrow acne by that age.

Hi Molly, did you ever try to take Benadryl for your itching (maybe check webmd or with your pharmacist just to make sure there are no interactions). I take 1 benadryl every night a couple hours before I go to bed. Since I've started this I've had 0 allergy problems (I also use Xlear saline solution), and it helps me sleep, which has always been extremely difficult for me. Last year I had 6 sinus infections in the first 4 months of the year, and in the 3 months I have been doing this I haven't even been stuffy once. Also, if some of your break-outs are allergy related it may help. If it's really bad I would consider going a couple days without using any products on your face just to give it time for the irritation to calm. The frozen wash cloth should help. I had to do that a couple years ago when I had poison ivy all over my face.

No, unfortunately I dont have any benadryl around the house. I meant to get some when I went to Walgreens but I forgot :( I wonder if sudafed would help me.

I am slightly annoyed. On friday, I called my primary care physicians office and I spoke to one of the medical assistants. I needed a reauthorization for my rhynocort aqua nasal spray. She said okay I will fax it over to your walgreens. She never did and then the office closed. Now I have to wait until Monday :(

I have to use products on my face. That wont work for me. I might try misterhealthmans advice though and not wash my face this morning, only with water before I apply my medicine, moisturizer, and new Everyday Minerals samples. In fact, I am gonna go take my shower now so I have time to play around with the make up before I go to work. I will post here some more before I leave. I always do.

Yeah I have to be really careful about what cold/cough meds I take because of my thyroid, so I only over-the-counter I will use is bendryl. I always keep it around anyway in case of a bee sting or something like that. I like how it makes me sleep easier too. I have a real tough time sleeping.

I have horror stories about doctor's office. For some reason mine ALWAYS forgets to write "dispense as written" for my thyroid meds. I have told them over and over that I will take generics for anything but thyroid meds. So I always have to straighten it out with the pharmacy, which always means they have to redispense my meds everytime the doctor calls me in a new prescription. The last time I was in there, the nurse was like "oh you've gained weight." I told her "Yeah I said I would the last time I was in here because my TSH levels are too high. I eat 1 packet of oatmeal, a few leaves of spinach for lunch, and steamed veggies for supper so don't tell me that I need to cut down on what I eat." I got no reply 😉 hahaha.

I'm not saying totally stop using products for good, I'm just concerned you are having an allergic reaction. In July I had an allergic reaction to antibotics and it caused a rash or irritation on my face. Even though it had nothing to do with what I was using on my face, my doctor told me to try not using any products at all on my face because they could increase the irritation and prolong the healing. 2 days was all it took to completely clear. Is your face still red and itchy? Does it feel better when you just wash it with water? I've been trying to think of something that may help the itching some without irritating. I do think you should try to get to the store and take some Benadryl tonight though. Maybe take 2 instead of the one and see if that will help.

Hey Molly!

If you have the regular Sudafed that is only for decongestant purposes, it won't help you with an allergy problem. Read the front of the Sudafed box. It will say in bold letters what it's for; such as, ALLERGY & SINUS or DECONGESTANT, etc. If you have any questions ever for anything drug related or interactions of meds, you can always call the pharmacist. I usually call two just to be sure they are both saying the same thing, if you can't talk to your doctor. In my experience doctor's offices are always closed when I've needed them lol and the 24-hour Walgreens is the place that has answered my med questions! Be sure it's not an allergic reaction to your new med too.

Have a good day at work and keep us posted.

It pretty much vaires because there are so many different sizes/brand names. You could get a pretty nice one at Target for under $30. Give it a try if the air in your home is too dry. I know my skin doesn't itch as much when I'm sleeping over a friend's house who have moist air.

I only have a few pills left of sudafed. In fact, I dont even have the box anymore 😆 I threw it away a long time ago actually. I dont know if its allergy and sinus or decongestant. Yes I do call the pharmacist. Sometimes they are helpful and sometimes they really are not. Im so annoyed though. I called the drs office at 9:30 when they opened and they didnt have it taken care of. They had all day to do it! Now I have to wait and my sinuses are horrible now. Plus I have a cold. My throat is scratchy. It doesnt hurt but it is bothersome and my nose, I am having a hard time breathing through it. Im just a wreck

Ive been thinking about something for awhile. How do you distinguish because moderate and severe acne? Is the severity based on the kind of pimples, the amount of pimples, or the scarring? I mean I have clogged pores on my forehead (noninflamed acne, blackheads same with my nose, blackheads all over my nose) but my chin and jawline I have a bunch of cysts, nodules, pustules and papules and a lot of redmarks. Does that make my acne moderate even though I have cystics? I mean its not all over my face and I dont have scars. I have a few but they are light scars and not noticeable at all

I've never classified acne by just the type of acne or just the amount of acne. If someone had one cyst every six months, I don't think that would qualify as anything but mild acne, even though it's cysts. On the flip side, though, I wouldn't classify someone with tons of blackheads as moderate or severe just because of their number. Personally, both the amount and type of acne factors into it.

But this is a bad breakout for you, this isn't the norm, right? I would say you're moderate, especially because your forehead area is nearly clear. I don't know the exact classifications, though.

Yes it is normal for me especially in winter. This happens to me every year. I break out everyday all year round but my breakouts look worse and there are a lot more pimples in the winter
