Accutane (isotretinoin) damage (side effects) on musculoskeletal system

32y.o. Used accutane 10mg/day (on my 85kg, that is around 0.1mg/kg of body weight) on and off for like 7-8 years and developed ligament/tendon calcifications (enthesopathy) and osteoarthritis in hips. Perhaps also in other areas of the body. Cannot run, and have pain in hips with prolonged standing and sitting.

Anybody has similar experience?

You used it for 7-8 years!? That is an extremely long time.

Are you still on it?

I used it for just the usual 5-6 months back in the day and my joints were so inflamed and painful. I was 20 and felt like I was 80. I'm not sure mine ever went back to normal, but they definitely got better after I stopped isotretinoin.

I used it on and off and low dose.

Did you ever have x-ray or mri on the region that was hurting you?

I never had any Xray or MRI stuff.

I am still shocked at how long you have been on isotretinoin, even at low dose. I've never heard of anyone being on that long.

Random idea for you. Have you heard about the carnivore diet (lion diet)? This just popped in my head because (1) it might reduce inflammation for you so you wouldn't have to be on meds so long term, and (2) it could help with joints. You can youtube or google it and see more about it. It's super hardcore, but then again, so is being on isotretinoin for years and years. I don't know if it's the answer for you, but jeez louise, I want your body to get calmed down and repair itself and get to a place of health! I think it's probably a bit much for most people to be on this diet, but if you have something so severe that it's bordering on auto-immune that makes you have to be on isotretinoin that long and your joints are suffering, etc. then it could potentially be an interesting Hail Mary. Have you ever thought about it?

I'm off Accutane last 8months. And am kind of ok with no sugar diet.

Over 11years I took like 70 boxes (10mg x 30pills). It is a lot, but on my weight the standard 6mo course is like 50boxes (so over 6months instead of 11years).

I took like 40boxes over 5years. Then had around 2years break than took like 6 boxes over 6 months. Then tendon and ligament symptoms started (which are irreversible ossifications).

Accutane can mess with your joints sometimes, and it's no fun. Have you ever tried taking glucosamine supplements for it?

I just bought glcosamine sulfate and chondroitine sulfate. The problem is even though I stopped Accutane 8 months ago the situation with my pelvis is deteriorating at a speedy rate. I was ok 2 years ago, but the more I walk and do some mild excercises the worse I am.

I remember it was mostly my hips and knees. I had a lot of pain and trouble standing and sitting and stuff. But it was all of my joints. I felt 80 years old.

I also couldn't watch movies because my eyes hurt when I did. Accutane affected me a lot.

As far as the diet goes, I am not referring to a no sugar diet. I'm referring to literally eating only meat. It's called the carnivore diet or lion diet. I can't say it is the answer, but a lot of people with auto-immune diseases are saying its the only thing that cures it for them. However, damage from Accutane isn't an auto-immune disease and I don't know if it's as reversible as an auto-immune disease would be.
