Aczone's like a gel, but like a water based gel with crushed up pill in it if that makes sense...it almost feels like a scrub. I was prescribed it for AM use and it was awful because rubbing it into my skin made my skin red and irritated because of the abrasive granules in it.
Also the tube it came in was gone in like two weeks or a little more than that---something crazy, plus it's expensive. I saw results, but nothing drastic, and my skin took an hour to calm down after the beating it took every time I put it on. I don't recommend it.
i've tried aczone on my face along with doryx 150 mg. though i was on and off doryx and used aczone as more of a spot treatment, my acne has seem to be getting better. the downside of aczone is the size of the bottle, it's so small and runs out fast! i haven't really received any side effects using aczone and i was told i could wear it under make-up. i want to get another prescription for it.
I find aczone good as a spot treatment too. My derm gave me some samples of it to put on these occasional deep spots that I get just a few times a year. I don't use it all over, and only as a spot treat on existing or developing spots. I find that it takes down inflammation very quickly, especially if I apply it a few times a day. I don't have to use it that often, but when I do, it really seems to be effective. I also use it to bring down inflammation after I get extractions done. I'm pretty sure that its effects are mostly anti-inflammatory - I don't think it helps reduce or prevent clogged pores though.
Ive used it on and off for about a year now (on and off cus im not good ad sticking to a schedule :] ), and ive noticed that it works much better if you cleanse/exfoliate before applying it. The grainy texture can get caught up in the dead skin cells and then it clumps up (as a previous poster descirbed) and that can clog pores.
If you get rid of most of the dead skin before you use Aczone, then it goes on much smoother, works more affectivly and is less likely to cause those little clogged pore bumps (i was getting them around my chin and forehead).
when i stick to my schedule, i use aczone in the Am and retin-a in the evening. I think they work really well together, as Aczone by itself sometimes left little scaly dry patches, but the retin-a made those dissapear, and the retin-a by itself causes redness but the Aczone made that go away.
for a gentle exfoliatoer i use the baking-soda/water/cleanser descibed in another post.
However, after a month or so of using aczone my skin is clear of all cystic acne!!! The only thing I have now is clogged pores (I dunno what you'd call them, they are bumps but not at all inflamed or infected feeling).
I am a 47 year old woman, and I've had mild/moderate acne for 35 years. I tried Epiduo, but it was too harsh for my skin. My derm then had me try Aczone. My skin is normally relatively clear, but I would get one or two deep pimples every week or so (so as soon as one goes away, I get another one). I used the Aczone for about a month (once a day in the morning; at night I continued with 2.5% BP), and during that time I had no deep pimples; so that part was good. On the downside, my skin in general looked worse. I got the same little bumps as described above. At first, I couldn't see them, but I would feel them when I washed my face. They eventually became noticeable in just the right light. They weren't red or inflamed, but I hated them. My skin also became much oilier (which I didn't think was possible). So I'm back to 2.5% BP morning and night.

I had a similar reaction to Aczone though my face was also quite red and inflamed (not just the bumps but overall) . I was only on it for two or three weeks. I realized I'm most likely allergic to it, I did some reading and found that while it is not a Sulfonamide it is similar, and I am allergic to Sulfa. What I read was that not everyone with Sulfa allergies will react to Aczone but there is a high incidence of cross reactivity, so it's something to consider. After I got off of it they went away fortunately, though I'm still breaking out from Tretinoin that the dermatologist also put me on.
I've been using it with Epiduo for about 3 months and my face has improved a lot. I don't know if it was mainly the Epiduo or if it was the Aczone, but my face is getting better. When I used to put Aczone on, the first 3 minutes of having the cream on my face felt burning kinda and then that went away. For Epiduo it was the other way around for the first 3 minutes or so I felt nothing but then after that itching for a while. But now neither creams hurt at all, I guess that means that my skin is used to it, but yeah it's been working good for me.
I've been using Aczone for 2.5 weeks now and havent seen much improvement. I had a dramatic difference about a week in but now my skin is back to its normal habits and worse in areas where i had none to begin with. EX: I have a lot of small bumps on my forhead (basically everywhere) that you cant see in normal light but I can with a magnifying mirror. My doc said that at 4 weeks it should really pick up and get clearer. The great thing is that it doesnt irritate my sensitive skin. Let ya know how it goes!
I've been using aczone for 6 weeks along with minocycline. I had to stop taking minocycline after about 3 weeks because of stomach issues and a yeast infection. After about 2 or 3 weeks I started seeing a little bit of improvement. Then I stopped the minocycline and it got worse again. The dermatologist says I have acne rosacea, and wants my skin to calm down before trying something else so I'm stuck on this for another 2 months. Hope it gets better. It does make pimples less inflamed, and there seem to be less under the skin. Bit I still breakout and my pores are still clogged, not to mention bumpy uneven skin tone.
