My next derm appointment was on Thursday. I had my first steroid injection for a keloid scar on my chest. My derm has a negative view of steroid injections - she warned me that it can discolour/hyperpigment the skin, make it wrinkly, or turn a keloid (hard/sticking out) into the opposite (a crater-like indented scar). So she advised if I wanted to go through with it that we experiment with just 1 scar for now, and if it has good results then we'll inject the others too, eventually including the keloid on my cheek line

So we did that, for a keloid on my chest. Sadly I have many, so I chose a medium sized one that is fairly hard/stubborn. The needle didn't hurt going in, but it did when she was injecting the fluid into it. Painful! Cuz the fluid has nowhere to go inside the hard tissue/scar. High pressure

First day it was swollen and inflamed. Second day it calmed down. No changes yet. I read it can take 5+ days to see a difference. We'll see. There's a chance it won't have an affect. Hope that's not me. I'd at least like to flatten/soften them a bit...

Next appointment to re-assess things is mid-June. Long way away

Just wanted to say I posted back in September to say I'd made the decision to allow my 13 year old son to start on a course of accutane. I was at my wit's end, his face, back, chest and upper arms were covered in severe acne despite having 18 months of different antibiotics & gels etc. I was inspired by your posts and would show them to my son and avidly followed your journey.
At 13, few of his peers were suffering from acne or even going through puberty and as a result he was being mercilessly bullied which on top of his shyness & embarrassment at his acne was making him so depressed. He would refuse to look in a mirror & continually called himself ugly.
So although it was a difficult decision I felt accutane was the way forward especially as I could already begin to see scarring occurring particularly on his back.
Well, he took his last tablets yesterday, 6 month on from when we started. He had 1 month of 40mg, 3 month of 60mg and 2 month of 40mg (He is nearly 6ft).
The side effects wernt pleasant, aching back, bloodshot eyes, nosebleeds & his lips seemed to have bled none stop for the last 4 months however even he agrees even on the worst day of side effects it's better than a single day of an acne covered face & body!
It certainly took a while before we noticed a significant improvement but then it's hard when you're scrutinizing every part of your face every single day. I would say however by end of Feb he was totally clear & was surprised when he was prescribed it again for the last 9 week.
Neither my son or I regret going on it. It's literally changed his life, he's so much happier and confident. God knows how he would have been psychologically had we not gone down this road.
Hopefully his lips will start to heal now, they are particularly bad but it's reassuring to keep reading your posts & it's been wonderful to see the difference it's made to you. You really have been inspirational and kept us going when we thought it wasn't going to work. Thanks from me & my now 14 year old son.

Hey, for you guys who have finished accutane, were u completely clear of any new spots at least a month before you finished?

My my derm is insisting on this when Ive been on the drug since August 17 and only get the odd spot every couple of weeks (to be fair I am 34 and had acne for 20 years so derm could just b giving me the best chance possible)

Hey, I remember your post in September. I can't believe it's been 6 months already! That's incredible news! It's life changing for sure, and it's a relief to know all of the negatives were worth the positives for you too. It's great that he's clear at 14, nice and early! I wish I had gotten on accutane in my teens too. Would've saved me wasting time on all of the antiobiotics and topicals. I'm glad I inspired you guys and made a difference like that. Crazy!

I had 1-2 lingering ones that took ages to heal after, but I didn't get many new ones. Maybe 1 each month. They've pretty much gone now though

Quick update: No sign of my oils coming back yet. I'm also back into my running, and my joints are just fine. Better than ever! Confidence definitely higher than last year too. Some people have noticed, even though I couldn't

My nurse insisted on one full month without acne before I could finish the course. I cleared up during month four so this worked out rather well.

DW75 - this is great news! So glad you're getting back into your running and your skin looks fab! I actually think my acne scars have had a worse effect on my confidence than my acne, but I do feel more comfortable in my skin these days. I'm not constantly worried that something touching my skin will break me out.

Update 8+ months since stopping accutane! My skin is just as clear as it was, even with bad diet and lifestyle and not washing as often as I should at times. The redness from accutane has gone I think. So far so good. I hope it's permanent!

I've been getting steroid injections for my keloid chest scars. Started in April, then in June, and then yesterday. I think they are working, but it's a slow and long term process. They have softened them and reduced the size of them. Some more than others. I'm going to stick with it and hopefully I have flat scars one day, even if they are discoloured.

Glad its going well for you mate. Do you still get any flushing or has that gone now? Im about 2 and half months post accutane and unfortunately spots are coming back, not really on my face which is good but on the back on my head and in my beard which can be painful. Hopefully it wont get too much worse.

i didnt end up taking the full course because I was so sick of the flushing and also I had a big holiday planned, was on 40mg for about 9/10 months tho. Whats really weird is that redness got better but has suddenly become worse which is strange.
