Wow, your skin is looking so much better! And I'm assuming you still have a few months of the treatment to go, which bodes really well.

Hi mate, just come from another post you replied to me on. Looks like progress is going well for you!

In in terms of the redness, do you got sudden hot flushes that last for a while?

i can cope with my redness most of the time but after eating and feeling hot or embarrassed, my face goes into redness over drive included my ears and cheeks feeling like they're on fire.

Hey, thanks!

Yeah for me it's the same. Just from slightest amount of embarrassed feelings, my face blushes and goes tomato red. Which is annoying because then I get self conscious and think people are looking at me and thinking "he's embarrassed", which then embarrasses me for real

How's your progress going? You've been on 30mg for a month if I recall from the other thread

Thanks! I want to be on it as long as possible, so hopefully 3-4 more months.

Week 9 done yesterday. I had a mild breakout, but overall redness has improved slightly. If you ignore my lip dryness (and mild flaking below the mouth), my face's oil/dryness actually feels good/balanced on 75mg. I hope that doesn't mean my skin will be really oily after my course. I don't miss oily skin one bit! I've also had the occasional stiff/sore knee joints and shins. I want to get back into exercising/running (i said that in July), but I've been scared to do so.

Also this might sound weird, but I've decided from now on (as of yesterday) to wash my face with water only, followed by a plain moisturiser/Vaseline for dryness. So, as minimal skincare routine as possible. Up until now, I'd always used a sensitive skin soap with natural ingredients, but I want my skin to "adapt" to water only. I figured while on accutane when less is more it'd be a good time to do so.
Actually, while on accutane with low oils, the need for washing thoroughly (with a face wash etc) has started to feel significantly less. Even my hair isn't oily after a few days (used to get oily after 1 day). So I will reduce the frequency of washing and ingredients.

My phone crashed and I lost all of my progress pictures, but found these 2:
the first one is from my initial breakout. The other one is from a couple of days agoreceived_10203489248028133.pngreceived_10203495234617794.jpeg

Tell me about it mate..I'm exactly the same it's a nightmare. Find myself going slightly red for no reason then it's a catalyst for full blown sun burn face!

I shouldnt moan because my skin is already very clear, had a slight breakout in week 2 but nothing too bad. It's bitter sweet because I've gone from worrying about acne to now the redness

I think I've built up roaccutane to be such a big thing over the years that I've found it psychologically tiring to b on it if that makes sense. I first got offered it when I was 17 but parents didn't want to risk the side effects but here I am 16 years later

10 weeks of accutane done.

After clearing up and getting back to normal from the initial breakout, I didn't think my skin improved that much in the last 3-4 weeks, but this week I've had 3 coworkers (who know I'm on accutane) tell me it's improved massively since then. Today I was told "without sounding bad, I usually notice your skin but this time I didn't. Massive difference!" That implies it was noticeably worse last time. The redness and overall look most have improved loads? It's weird because I don't feel like much has change since then, plus I actually had a breakout in my left cheek.

I can't complain. I hope the rest of my redness/scars and overall skin complexion improves. And if my breakout goes without a new one, I could have zero active spots on my face for once.

Just wanted to say how inspiring your posts have been. My son is only 13 and already been on 18 months of different antibiotics, creams etc to no effect. His confidence and self esteem are at rock bottom due to bullying at school over his skin. He won't even look in a mirror at the moment. Today we have been prescribed accutane 40mg. The dermatologist was so positive that the treatment will work and told my son it will change his life! We've discussed all the possible side effects but I'm scared it won't work after trying everything else and it having almost zero effect. Im also dreading his skin going worse in the interim as I'm not sure he can take much more but reading your blog and going through it with my son has given us some hope. Good luck with your journey and thanks for sharing.

Hey there, I'm genuinely so happy to know that my thread has reached out someone, in particular to your son/family. From the experience I've had with 8 years of various antibiotics/topicals not having a permanent/successful effect, in my opinion it'll almost certainly be the best decision you could have made for your son. Accutane is unlike other treatments in that it's supposed to have a long term effect/remission. If I could go back and just get on accutane from the very start, that's what I would do

Best of luck to you and your son. Don't get concerned if there is an initial breakout/worsening of acne as that's common and, according to my dermatologist, an indicator that it's doing working. A few weeks (or even months) of worsened skin is well worth it for the clear skin in the future. I'd be interested to know how he's getting on in a few months!

Hey Holly (Jolly). 11 weeks and a bit done now. My redness has improved and I'm clearer overall, but I'm still randomly breaking out every now and then. Not as badly as before, but still enough to set me back slightly (each spot leaves a bit of redness behind).

The most notable change this month is my side neck area (my worst place) stopped breaking out like it used to. And also (and this is not always visible on pictures) my skin's texture is a lot smoother and nicer looking. Some days it looks worse than others, but there's progress for sure

I've washed my face with water only for 2+ weeks now, and only once every 2-3 days if not exercising or active. I think it's helped slightly

I'm also at a dilemma because I want to eat healthier (generally lower fat), but accutane is meant to absorb more when taken after a higher fat (20g+) meal. So I've been going overkill on fat intake, eating junk like 3 packs crisps, desserts, chocolate, etc. I'm thinking of eating peanut butter sandwiches and higher fat "healthier" meals instead though

I'm interested in what my dermatologist will say on my next appointment (6th October). It's come around fast. I wonder how long I'll be on the course

I actually have no active acne on my face now. I have 2 scabs on my left cheek, but they're flat and nothing underneath them. Once those go my left cheek should look like my right. On my right neck line I have a keloid, and on my left neck I have a couple really small ones that look like small acne. The rest of my face is just redness/scarring

My face still looks redder in outdoor lighting though

That's gr8. No active acne. That's really good progress for 11 weeks I think. Onward and upward!!

Glad to hear it's progressing so well!

In terms of eating healthier I just want to say that fat doesn't have to unhealthy, in fact some fat in our diets is a really good thing. Chicken, beef, fish all contain some amount of fat, enough for a dose of Accutane I imagine. Otherwise, coconut oil, seeds, and nuts are a great source of fat, or you could try avocado or eggs. I also hear that dark chocolate is high in fat but also packed full of anti-oxidants and other good things. I normally only have a couple of squares after dinner though, as it's still got sugar in it. Otherwise you could try raw cacao nibs - less sugary, more bitter, but just as delicious.

Yeah. My diet's gone to crap ever since July. Used to be good. It's just my fitness/energy was best on high carb / low fat foods, I'm not used to eating higher fat healthier foods.

Dermatologist appointment today. She said I have ~4 weeks left of cumulative dose left over (if going by 120-150mg/kg for the total course).

I have some acne on my back, so she's decided to give me an extra 4 weeks on top of that. So my course will officially be over in 8 weeks time. I still have ~18 days of pills left at home, so technically 10 weeks and 4 days until I finish.

Yeah. The derm said to us, four weeks of completely clear skin before they stop treating. Sounds sensible.

It's exciting to hear you're on the home straight!! My nurse hasn't said anything about four weeks of clear skin before stopping, but I'm only half-way through my course so I'm not really there yet. I have my next appointment on Monday so I'll ask her then.

Aww! Glad to hear it - you guys have kept me going to! It's so good to have a community here that understands what we're going through.

Hey! I genuinely didn't realise it's been more than 2 weeks since coming on here

All is good thanks. My skin's complexion/smoothness and overall redness has improved I think.

Also, just over a month ago I felt like I was still "close" to breaking out, like I was on the borderline, whereas now things feel a lot more stable. I feel like my skin has become less sensitive than before. E.g. in the past I'd breakout from headphone wires touching cheeks, and skin would feel inflamed ready to erupt from almost anything.

Having said all of that, my forehead broke out in 2-3 new ugly spots the other day. I think/hope these were one-offs though, and after these are gone I'll be spot free again

I also think my back acne cleared up. A couple months ago I'd get random inflamed lumps, but now it's good. My skin is just so calm overall, like I've not experienced since before puberty

SIDE EFFECTS
These have increased quite a bit the last 3 weeks or so. I've had a few nosebleeds in bed. Nostrils VERY dry the last few days, could hand been exacerbated by the colder weather though. Also my the right corner of my lip is "split" and tight when waking up. My left side is fine, funnily enough. Sometimes my knees ache quite a bit when standing up from kneeling. Feel old. And without going into too much detail, my digestion has become a lot drier, despite drinking water and increasing fiber intake...!

if i calculated it correctly, i finish my course just before Christmas

Pics. Keloid scar on right neck and smaller ones on left side. Also I think notable regular scars left cheek (very red mark). Plus the new forehead spotsIMG_20171023_154225.jpgIMG_20171023_154145.jpgIMG_20171023_154139.jpg

Hi mate,

looks like your skin isn™t red now, are you still get the flushing? I am but overall redness probably isn™t as bad as it was.

funny about you mentioning your digestion being much drier, I also have the same side effect but saw the dermatologist last week and he said this shouldn™t be a result for roaccutane, defo is though.

I think I might also need to be on the tablets for 8 months when I was hoping for no more than 6 months.

Thanks juwalker! Yeah it's surreal, time flew! Today I finish my previous prescription. Tomorrow I'm onto the final prescription bag, which has 8 week's worth of pills (3*5mg + 3*20mg / day for 56 days). There's 7 days left for October (starting and including tomorrow), 30 days on November. 37 in total, plus 19 days to get to 56. My final day of pills will be on the 19th December. Not long!

Hey bigm84. Yeah my redness has improved a lot in a rested state, but I still flush easily when mildly embarrassed, or overheated from something slightly strenuous. A bit annoying but hopefully it goes after the course

Yeah it would make sense for it to be related to the accutane. It dries out the whole body. And I noticed a lot of other people experience the same, often much worse actually

8 months! I think you're on a lower dose, so it would make sense
