Meanest thing that someone has said about your acne

The most hurtful thing anyone has about acne to me wasn't actually directed at me.

One of my closest friends was talking about a friend of mine and saying how she didn't really like him, found him sort of weird and added loudly "HE'S REALLY SPOTTY EW". Ok so maybe it means she thinks my face isn't as bad as his, I doubt she would want to offend me, but it really did. Showed she didn't really have any sensitivity over acne and showed how she really felt about people who had it. At the time my skin wasn't really as bad as his, but it was still bad. Now it's getting worse and its hurtful knowing the way she's going to think of me now. I've heard her say it a few times before and I can't think why she would want to say it in front of me. Made me feel uncomfortable.

Happen to anyone else?

not necessairly (I'm SURE i spelled that wrong...) a mean thing per se, but it was extremely awkward anyway.

i was in sixth grade and was starting to break out on my back.

...and i was changing for gym one day and usually i was really careful about it, changing with my back to the wall, etc. but one day i screwed up and turned around, to a chorous of gasps.

and then one of the more outgoing girls asked me what all the "scratches" on my back were from.

in hindsight, i'm proud of myself for lying so quickly. my response was that i was allergic to the new laundry detergent my mom was using.

they believed me. so much so that i had to decline offers by some of them to walk with me to the school nurse.

but i can still remember the feeling of everyone in the locker room turning to look at me.

it can suck sometimes.

shit, i saw a "friend"'s true colours yesterday. now i've had a girlfriend, but acne made me so depressed that i didn't really work it with the ladies too much. so i'm chilling with my friend and we're just talking like normal, he's wearing a huge jacket with fur around the hood so jokingly i call him "fur burger!" and out of the clear blue he's like "at least i get some." then he's like "that was a lowblow." i can see this motherfucker now, he's a real cocky hard headed SOB, used to think he was cool but what the fuck.

No one's ever said anything... Except my best friend who told me: "You don't HAVE an acne problem". Which only made me mad because she's got it more severe than me, I just get frustrated when my parents or her tell me that nothing's wrong when I can see it!

By the way...

If someone tells you: "What happened to your face?!" Just reply with: "What happened to your ass?! Oups, I mean, your face."

Thing is, (in my school at least) the Asian kids go around claiming other kids were being racist or whatever, knowing that they (the Asian kids) were untouchable because the teachers were scared shitless of appearing racist themselves. Nobody ever actually said anything racist whatsoever, it was the Asian kids who made it out people thought it was a 'problem'.

"Did you change your regimen? You look worse..." -my mom

"Why don't you pop your pimples? They're so annoying!" -idiot roommate

"Why do all the ugly, pimple faced guys get girlfriends?" -my "friend". and yeah right

"Man did you see that guys face? He's so ugly!" -overhearing another "friend" at lunch

"Wow, your yearbook photo looks better than I thought it would!" -my sister, and the photo was edited heavily

But what really gets me is what I know people say behind my back. Behind all of ours. Honestly, if they speak this way to our faces, what do you think they say when we aren't around? How do they describe us?

When I think back on high school, I realized that I never was really made fun of for my acne. It was actually in middle school that it happened. This is kind of odd. I attended middle school in Florida and high school in a small city in Ohio....sometimes I truly think that the surroundings you are in and the people who grew up in that surrounding can tell how they treat you. Everyone was really nice in hs and never said "Oh, what's that on your face"-it's something about growing up in the Midwest that I can't seem to describe. But in middle school back in Florida people were rude. No offense to any Southerners or anyone else. This is just a thought since I've lived in so many different places and have an interesting perspective on how people are in different places. :D

I completely agree with you. Utah vs. Las Vegas = completely different. People there were so cruel, it shocked me. And though here in Utah I might feel like I'm being looked at and judged for my skin, it's a whole different experience and I don't have to deal with rude and ignorant comments. Ok, maybe occassionally, but not nearly as much, and not nearly as mean. Kids will point and say "You have an owie" and "You have lots of owies"

I was volunteering at a Red Shield after school program in L.A., and this little kid I was helping looked at my face and asked me, "Why does your face look like that?" I told him it was because I lived in Nevada, and coming to California with all the humidity made it like that, but I knew that wasn't true.

Well, I work at an elementary school, and today my skin was a bit flushed because of the weather, not bad, but some kid says, "Why do you have bad skin?" I just ignored it. I know my skin doesn't look bad, but it was awkward.

My brother is actually the cruelest person about my spots. iv got a large bump on my face and were in the car with my mum going home and he said "why dont you freeze it and take an ice pick to it?" he started laughing and then the worst bit was my mum started laughing at me too... i almost cried in the car but i just went straight to my room as soon as i oculd get out the car.

When I was in the locker room at University before dissection, two girls on the other side of the lockers were speaking, didn't know I was there;

"y'know that guy Mark at Adam & Lydias' table?"

"No, who's Mark?"

"The guy with the acne?"

"Aw right, ok..."

I'm a 19 year old guy and I went back to my halls and cried & cried. I've always been so popular all my life, with guys and girls. Now though, this condition has absolutely crippled any self-esteem and self confidence I had, I'm away from home at uni and didn't make any new friends last year 'cos I wouldn't speak to anyone. Hearing that devastated me, I've always been friends with everyone, now it's like "is this the only way that people know me by?"

I've never been so hurt by something in my life.

hi all. Im new here and this is my 1st post.

some things people have said in the past that really stand out...

in 7th grade a kid who walkd up to me and started counting my zits, after he got to 10 or so he said I give up! that was the first time I cussed anybody out, which in 7th grade most kids arent prepared for. he never spoke to me again.

I hate it when my dad walks up to me all close staring at my face and says i need to spend more time in the sun cuz it helps, or wow youre really breaking out today... do u need some more facewash? i know hes being concerned, but sometimes it really seems like hes trying to make me feel like shit on purpose.

one time I overheard a girl I knew talking to her friends about how no girl could ever kiss a guy with acne all over his face because nobody wants to make out with a pimple.

a "friend" once said that I wouldnt be me without the acne. As if the acne defines who i am.

anywho theres probably more but oh well...

I just hate how people look at me when theyre talking to me. I'm 22 now and my acne is almost gone, but I still get the occasional boil or nodule... but the red marks arent going away, so ppl think i still have really bad acne. I hate how noone has sympathy for acne problems. They just dont understand. my mental image of myself doesnt have a face, and I still avoid mirrors and cameras like the plague because they only serve as grim reminders. I've had thoughts like taking a razor blade and just scraping all the skin off my face or worse in the past, and though i would never act on such vile ideas the facet remains the same: I dont have a face. I'm not a person. I'm just a walking pimple. At least thats how I feel sometimes... jeez sorry for going on and on but that felt realy good to finally say... thanks for listening and i love u all

i know i posted one earlier, but there was one other time i had a pretty shitty incident relating to my acne.

there was this nurse at my dr's office one time. she was talking to me about my acne and seemed pretty nice. i left feeling pretty confident that my skin was getting better...

about a week later i called the dr's office because i had some questions about my meds. i was talking with her on the phone and she was a complete bitch. this is a little of how our conversation went...

me-"I'm just calling because i've noticed the cream is making me break out more then ever and my face has become very red and irritated".

the nurse-"i've never had anyone not have success with this. maybe one in a hundred".

me-"is there anything i can use to make the itching and redness calm down?"

the nurse-(in a real agitated voice) "well, not really. your acne isn't going to magically disappear. it's part of the process."

me-"i guess after dealing with this for so long i just would like to find something that helps".

the nurse-(now more agitated then before) "well...i think that's the reason people keep looking...if there was an answer acne wouldn't exsist".

by this time i was ready to slam the phone down, but politely (your parents always teach you to be polite) said thank you and good bye.

this nurse no longer works at the dr's office...thank god!!!! :D

I remember in my english class, some popular kid shouted out really loudly 'WTF happened to your face its disgusting' and the whole class were all quiet after that.

I don't remember how I reated, I guess I blocked it all out.

Another time, it hurt to think some other kids just kept hassling me about my face, I guess things like that made me wanna go and die.

BUT, that was a few years ago, I guess you kinda forget, or suppress that kinda thing.

I think the worst comments are those people make unintentionally. I have never had anyone say anything particularly mean about my skin, but I am also not that sensitive to strangers or people I don't know (that's how I can get by anyway). The worst is when my friends will complain about one pimple that I can't even see or make comments about how ugly some other girl is because she has bad skin. Those have really stung.
