Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

Exfoliates like nobody's business. Baby smooth skin. Lessens fine wrinkles. Millia are quickly expelled. Blemishes die quickly. A little goes a long way.

Cons:

The first couple of weeks was frustrating because I was using a bit more than recommended. I got extremely flaky and red. To put on moisturizer burned.

Use ONLY the recommended dosage (pea size) for the entire face. Patience is key. I absolutely love this product.

Pros:

1) reduced my acne
2) helped fade pigmentation caused by acne
3) covered by my insurance company

Cons:

causes dry, flaky skin = peeling

retin-a has helped reduce my mild acne (that actually used to be moderate-severe cystic acne until recently when i changed skincare products). my skin is a lot better since i started using retin-a and is clearing up pretty fast. i'm using .025% cream formula and haven't experienced an initial breakout (yet). i don't think i will experience an IB since my acne is mild. i use cetaphil moisturizing cream to treat the dryness and peeling. so far, so good.

Pros:

Clears up acne quick, fades acne scars, easy to apply. Cheap for me.

Cons:

Makes my skin peel very badly! Makes skin dry and tight.

It really works. I've tried everything for my acne, and this is the only thing that has worked. It fades acne scars quick. The only drawback is the peeling skin but that can be helped by light exfoliation and a good moisturizer. (cetaphil lotion). Some people say you break out bad for the first few weeks, but that never happened to me. Cheap since its covered by my insurance

Pros:

CLEARS REDNESS

Cons:

MAKES SKIN PEEL LIKE CRAZY!!!!!!!!

MY DOCTOR HAD ME TRY THIS AFTER ANTI-BIOTICS DIDN'T WORK...AND SADLY NEITHER DID THIS PRODUCT. IT DID CLEAR UP REDNESS FROM BREAK OUTS BUT DIDN'T HELP ME ACTUALLY STOP BREAKING OUT AND I COULDN'T GET OVER MY SKIN PEELING. THEY SAY YOU SHOULD STOP PEELING AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS BUT BY WEEK 6 I HAD HAD ENOUGH!!! I COULDN'T EVEN TOUCH MY FACE WITHOUT FLAKES OF SKIN COMING OFF!! ICK!!! PERSONALLY I'D RATHER COVER UP REDNESS THEN HAVE PATCHES OF SKIN MISSING.

Pros:

Works great. Seeing improvment of skin already. A few of my acne scars are fading. No cost to me!

Cons:

Some areas are breaking out more than usual, like around my chin area. Have to be patient to use the product.

If used consistently and by following physician's recommendations, great results will show. I have had little flaking. I use it at bedtime and use a facial moisturizer with 15 SPF in the morning.

Pros:

Has made me completely clear with an overall smooth and even skin tone.

Cons:

Takes a long time and you have to be very patient. Towards the beginning you will experience extreme redness and flakiness -- not fun!

The first time I went on Retin-A I was 15 and it worked wonderful. Although I didn't use it as consistently (or religiously!) as I use it now I obtained really good results. I stayed on it until I turned 18 and went away to college where I got too lazy to apply Retin-A every night. After the first couple months off Retin-A my skin was still perfectly clear so I had thought that I no longer needed it, but I was so WRONG. After a few months off it my skin was the worst it has ever been! So I went back to my derm who put me back on it. Best decision ever. Although this time, it took me a lot longer to see improvements. The first couple of months I was so upset with the appearance of my skin, but I stuck with it. I didn't see any major improvements until about month 4 which was really frustrating, but I am glad I stuck with it. It has now been a little over a year since I restarted Retin-A and I am 100% clear with very little red marks that are still fading day by day.

Pros:

Evens skin tone, reduces red marks, works proactively by keeping pores from clogging rather than killing the bacteria already in a clogged pore, like topical antibiotics/BP.

Cons:

Some dryness and redness, requires patience and commitment some simply can't take.

I used the gel form of this when I was 13 and hated it. It broke me out, and like seems to be a trend with teens, threw it out when I didn't see immediate improvement. I've tried it again now, at the age of 20. It's been three weeks. I can say my red marks are improving, and my skin has an evenness and beauty I don't even remember since I hit puberty so young. There has been a slight increase in breakouts, but who cares when my overall skin looks so lovely and healthy? Besides, I know even better results are coming! I'm a fair-skinned redhead using the .01% cream (the strongest kind available) and even then only experienced some minor dryness/peeling and pain during the first few days. A moisturizer in the AM took care of it, plus some light exfoliation every couple of days. Follow your doctor's instructions EXACTLY, be patient, and it WILL work. Don't make the same mistake I did back then. I could have saved so much time, money, and pain just using the medicine l

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
