Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

It does bring all of the dirt that is in your skin to the surface, as it said it would. The acne will look worse at that stage, but in about a week, it will almost completely clear out. The skin is left in pretty good shape.

Cons:

Excessive drying OR very oily at times. Does NOT prevent more acne from forming. Overall, not that much of a difference.

There isn't that much of a difference in my skin. I've been on it for a full month. I actually had high hopes for this; Unfortunately, it's not the 'miracle cure' we're looking for.

Pros:

Makes skin feel smoother.

Cons:

Been using for 2 months and acne is worse than ever. Started out with about 5 pimples and a couple scars and now have a face full of it. Kept using it hoping it would eventually start clearing up but still hasnt happened. Makes skin redder.

Has not worked for me so far. Going to use it for about another month and then give up on it. Wish i just would have stayed of it and had just a few pimples. I have trouble even looking myself in the mirror.

Pros:

cheap if you have health insurance

Cons:

it dried out my skin, made my acne worse, which they tell it will before you use it, and it made me break out in a massive skin infection all over my face!

DONT BOTHER WITH IT! it did nothing for me but make my face look 10000X worse...i decided to go with a more natural method of skin care....use apple cider vinager, honey and pure vitamin e oil for moisture....my skin has never looked better!

Pros:

Forces acne out of the skin aggressively.
Great medication in the winter.

Cons:

Break outs. Sun sensitivity.
Redness. Makes skin oily.
Peeling. DO NOT use this medication in hot/humid conditions.

This medication actually worked quite well for me in the winter. However, I have been using it for 6-7 weeks in May/June in Georgia and it has massacred my skin. It sloughs off dead skin at a more rapid rate, so when your skin becomes oily from sweat(i am outside a lot and work in a hot restaurant) it clogs pores and makes the problem worse. Sun sensitivity has also been an unpleasant side effect. Could be good for right circumstances, but not for me in the summer.

Pros:

First few applications made skin soft and smooth

Cons:

Every morning waking up to skin peeling off your face, while applying eyes stung from fumes produced, increased amount of zits, 2 months in and no major improvement to acne just smooth skin.

Takes too long to work, stings eyes even though not applying anywhere near.... just don't bother quite simply not worth the aggrevation

Pros:

It made my skin ALOT less oily and it improved some of the numbers of the pimples on my face.

Cons:

-My skin was dried up SO BAD! It came to the point that where just poking at my face hurt like hell.
-Also, it made my skin all flaky.

I would not recommend this product. I used it for like 3-4 months and it was absolute hell. After it got to the point where I couldn't even TOUCH my face without being in pain, I stopped using it. It took a few weeks before my face went back to normal (meaning without the pain of just touching my face).

Pros:

Did not improve acne

Cons:

Developed an allergy to BP so this became useless

Didn't work for me, hopefully it does for you. Anyone else with this problem?

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
