Pros:

gets rid of existing acne
prevents new breakouts
fades acne scars
improves overall look of skin

Cons:

dry, peely skin
inital redness and minor breakouts

I started using Retin A about 6 weeks ago and it has made a HUGE difference. It got rid of my acne in about 2 weeks(the 1st week it made them a little worse). It has already begun to fade older scars and my skin looks much better than I imagined it could so quickly. My skin is dry so youll need a good mosturizer! Other than that I have no complaints. It has honestly changed my life so much not having to wake up to new pimples everyday. Instead I wake up with none and glowing skin! Keep with it the first few weeks because after that it is TOTALLY WORTH IT!! FYI - I used this with Clean&Clear Sensitive foaming face wash, Aveeno daily brightning scrub(every other morning to help peeling), Cetaphil moisturizer and Aveeno Clear Complexion moisturizer. hope this helps!

Peeling of skin

I used to have the complexion that people said they would die for.. But boom, at 23 years old, I suddenly get a sudden breakout that just won't stop! I'm now well into my second month of Retin-A (at night) use, combined with twice application of topical clindamycin in the daytime. When I first used it, I went a little overboard and thus experienced hell - my face became extremely irritated, red, burning, even badly abraded in some areas. I had some initial breakout as well due to the irritation. It was so bad it made me cry.. and I decided to off the Retin-A for a week to repair the damage. A week later, I started on Retin-A again, this time in very small amount, usually 1/2 an hour after I last washed my face. I slab on sunscreen wherever I go (I live in a tropical country). Good to say, my skin is recovering good.. The dark marks are definitely fading. It brings out a lot of the gunk under the skin I had (manifested as fleshy bumps), so it's good. Once the gunk comes to surface, it heals faster with application of Retin-A. I am still having maybe like 2 small pimples left.. with around 5-7 bumps under the skin that I still religiously apply Retin-A on. Oh, and still having some dark PIH marks, but they're definitely fading with time. I had one small punched-out scar, but now it's gone with Retin-A application. Side effects wise, now my problem is just the flaking.. It's less flaky now than when I first started.. I use Neutrogena Moisture with SPF-15, and it, for most of the time, kept the flaking and dryness in control. Bottom line.. it will get worse at first.. but stick to it.. It really works. I'm glad I read some reviews here that encourages users to stick through the hard times - I did, despite feeling horrible... and in the end it pays off! :) Will write again when I'm (hopefully) completely clear! :) Hope I'm clear before my engagement party though.. hehe~

Pros:

- Clearer complexion
- More even skin tone
- No blackheads
- Severe acne gone!

Cons:

- Major initial breakout
- Very, very dry & raw skin during the first month of usage

I have been usin Tretinoin, RetinA since the end of December. My skin is beginning to look flawless & has a nice glow to it. When I first began the treatment, I had severe acne, I had a lot of under the skin blackheads & cystic, painful pimples. I have been taking Tetracycline, but the blackheads & some pimples still would not go away so my derm prescibed me with Tretinoin. At first when I began it, I wanted to give up right away, my skin became SO sensitive & painful. I also had a few major breakouts, I stuck with it & I am so happy i did, my skin looks amazing now! I get a lot of compliments on it on a daily basis. I am still having a few breakouts & that is becuase the cream brings all that those nasty pimples to the surface so that in the long run, your skin is clear. Adive to those just sarting out with it; STICK with it! You will be SO glad you did. Get a mild facial cleanser, I use Purpose, it is gentle, cheap & not irritating & get a good non-comegedic facial moustirizer, I used Oil of Olay. Dont use anything too irritating. Within a a month or two, yuo will be so happy you stuck with it, It is difficult at first, bc of the inital breakout & it makes you feel like your skin will never look nice but IT WILL! You just have to give the cream time to work & purge your skin. Good Luck!!

Pros:

-if used as directed, it will clear acne.
-replenishes skin tone
-after 6 months, makes your skin look like you've never had sever acne
-your self confidence begins to come back after 4 months of treatment

Cons:

-not a cure, even after acne clears up, for some people like myself, if you want to stay clear
-the first 3 months are not fun

I believe any acne prone person past puberty should use Retin-A, even if they have clear skin, because it will keep your skin clear. In my Junior year in High School, I had the worst acne in school'very severe, with cysts in my neck that caused me pain; they were big cysts, and I would squeeze them sometimes just to relieve pressure. I had face, body, and neck acne. I began the accutane treatment in the month of December of my Junior year. By the end of that year, I had clear skin. My senior year was a very good year on every level of a teenage boys life. Then after starting college I noticed pimples returning. Nothing bad, but it was annoying. I never really used acne products after the accutane, other than face washes. Several years later, my face and neck acne seems to be returning. In the beginning of 2009, I thought my acne would go away if I changed my diet, exercised, took multi vitamins, antioxidants, drink plenty of water, meditate to reduce stress'everything you can think of. I wash my face two times a day and never touch or pick pimples; but they kept getting worse. Beginning of 2010, I began using Retina-A .1% every night as directed, and a topical version of clindamycin every other morning. I've been doing this for two weeks now, and my IB wasn't as bad; the part that broke out the worst was the skin that is on my jaw line and under my ear. Retin-A and Accutane are the same drug; Accutane affects the entire body (even your hands, they become sensitive and dry and delicate to the sun), and Retin-A affects the areas where you apply it. When I began the treatment this year, I had no acne on my forehead, body, nose, and very little on my cheeks. It seemed to focus around my jawline and neck and forehead. My plan now is to stay on Retin-A, even after it clears my skin. I've read about the benefits of continuos use of Retin-A, even after acne goes away. The % should be lowered and the usage should be every other day.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
