Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

This medicine helps to improve breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, and cystic acne. Clearing of the face happens nearly immediately and is truly noticeable in those with more severe acne.

Cons:

EXTREMELY DRYING, skin peeling, bleaching of pillowcase

I have had moderate acne since I was 11, and am now 20. I took Clindamycin from the time I was 11 until 14 and that worked pretty well. Throughout high school, my face stayed clear without treatment, but about 2 years ago when I entered college, my acne began to get worse again on my cheeks and chin. I was put on Tretinoin about 2 months ago, and overall it has been working very well so far, but the dryness is starting to become a big problem as the weather gets colder and the air dryer.

Pros:

Gets rid of scars, Brings pimple pus to the surface

Cons:

Brings pimple pus to the surface, causes sun sensitivity.

I am 14 going on 15. I have dry cheeks, forehead, and around the mouth, but super oily nose and between lip and nose. When I apply this to red pimples that dont have heads yet (not cysts), it brings the pus up to a head so that i can pop it and it'll heal faster. Also, when I apply this to scars with some moisturizer/lotion, the scar goes away quicker. It got rid of blackheads in my ears. If not used with moisturizer, your skin will be very dry. I occasionally get red zit like pumps on my thigh, and i use this to make it go away and heal succesfully. It doesn't really work on my other types of pimples on my face or back. A little progress on my chest.

I've been using it for about 2 months, made me break out at first, but now everything is under control, my scars are fading. But my cheeks look blushy.

Pros:

This is my second report on tretinoin 0.01% gel. My acne, blackheads and whiteheads are improved but I plan to ask for a stronger strength at my next Dr. appointment. Brown spots are definitely lighter.

Cons:

Takes several months for skin to adjust, during which time there is sensitivity, flakiness, irritation and initially worsening of blemishes. This product takes patience but pays off eventually.

Certainly worth a six-month trial. I plan to use it from now on as long as it continues to be effective.

Pros:

works (eventually), smoother skin

Cons:

redness initially, peeling, dryness, minor initial breakout.

worth it. I've been on it for 3 1/2 months and i have two pimples left. only nose blackheads, and overall very smooth skin. People compliment me now, and I feel great! Try it, what do you have to lose? Be patient though, I wasn't even remotely happy until 3 months, although my skin began clearing at 1 1/2 months. Redmarks are slowly fading.

Pros:

Works! Made all my pimples go away.

Cons:

The first 4 months were horrible, had light to moderate acne, but this turned it into severe with huge cystic pimples that I had never had before. My skin got a lot worse during this initial period and had a lot of breakouts with huge pimples.

The initial period was horrible and really unpleasant, I didn't want to leave the house. However, I am soooooo happy I stuck through it. My skin is now pimple free!! I get upset if I even have one pimple. This product has made a huge difference!

Pros:

Smoother skin

Cons:

Started out with .1%, face peeled very badly and was red. It hurt to open my mouth to eat food, I could only drink liquids. After about 2 weeks all hell broke loose on my face, cystic bumps and whiteheads EVERYWHERE. Discontinued use.

I lasted for 5 weeks before I had to stop. I was taking antiobiotics and still had a hellish initial breakout. My derm currently has me on Prednisone to calm my face and Bactrim to decrease acne. So I guess the bottom line is, this stuff may work for some people if you are able to get through that initial breakout, but for me it just made my acne worse and now I have a bigger mess than when I started 5 weeks ago. :(

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
