Pros:

Clears up acne
Strengthens skin
reduces pore size
softens lines
A LOT of other benefits

Cons:

Initial peeling, redness and breakouts
-Use a moisturizing oil to help (Clarins' Santal Oil helps A LOT)

I have been using this for over a year. I used to have frequent breakouts and heavy congestion in my skin, with acne bumps under my skin on my forehead (like little closed clogged pores really) as well as black heads. I started with .025% for the first month 2-3 a weeks. The redness and A LOT of peeling (like my face was chapped) started at the end of week 2. Then on week 3 I broke out like crazy people at my job kept telling me to stop using it b/c I couldn't even cover up anything with makeup and they were worried that I was damaging my skin. TOTALLY the opposite! After about a another 2-3 of redness and peeling, it slowly started healing, then the redness went away. And VOILA baby smooth soft skin and NO MORE CYSTIC ACNE! or really much of any acne, plus my blackheads we're extractable (TMI I'm sure). I have tried to stray from my HG regime and have always come back to this :) I am now using .05% routinely now. #1 STICK WITH IT #2 Wait 20 mins after cleansing before you apply #3 SUNSCREEN ppl #4 Moisturizing oil (Clarins' Santal Oil is my fav) for your 'off nights' (fot the nights you aren't using the treatment, it helps marvelously!) I liked this 100x more than any lotion or cream, b/c your face will be SUPER sensitive, and a lot of thigs (even water sometimes) will burn!

Pros:

-gets rid of some redness on my face
-smooths skin
-fades scars
-makes my skin a little dry
-gets rid of blackheads
-evens out skin tone

Cons:

-"initial breakout"

i've been using this for almost a month with doxycycline and it's really been improving my skin so far. i know it takes 3-4 months to work, but i used it before a couple years ago and it also worked on my skin then. also, i don't have to wear as much makeup anymore to cover up my skin.

Pros:

For me, None honestly.

Cons:

Do not use this please unless you are emotional ready to go through the very horrible initial break out.

Within the first day of having applied the .05% cream, my face was covered with zits, my pores were enlarged, and I had blackheads I did not have before. It was hard to believe that the initial reaction started so abruptly. My acne was not terrible, and the ones I had on my face were exacerbated by the creme. I was already emotional and depressed about the old scars I had, so those coupled with the extreme redness and new severe acne covering my face I couldn't help but sob. I tried to give it time but it just became increasingly worse.Reading other reviews and seeing it could take up to six months for this subside, I wasn't ready to put myself through that. When reviewers say they initial breakout is bad, they mean it. If only I had seen the reviews before my dermatologist offered Retin-a I would have nicely declined and opted for something less harsh. Now the acne that retin-a gave me has scarred, remains obscenely red, and is showing no signs of fading. Harsh product and certainly not for sensitive skin or mild to moderate acne. Please bare this in mind before starting the regime.

Pros:

Clears acne
Slowly fades hyper pigmentation
Smooths skin

Cons:

Drying
Initial breakout

This cream actually works! I had my doubts in the beginning, but I really do see results. At first I didn't have that big of an initial breakout like I imagined, so I was glad. But then I started using MUFE HD powder with 100% silica and this made my forehead break out everrywhere :( It took a while for me to realize it was the HD powder, because I thought it was the medicine not working so I was really negotiating on switching creams. But I stuck with it and now ( a week later) almost half of the pimples are gone! Key things I learned from using Tretinoin cream ***wait 30 minutes after you wash your face before applying cream ***apply only a pea size! I used to apply a lot more but it made my skin reallly oily. you only need a pea size for your whole face. ***I switched my face wash to Purpose and it has also helped my skin. Use a face wash that doesn't have extra fragrances or ingredients. You just need the basic face wash that cleans, you don't need the added 'acne wash' or 'salicylic acid' or 'benzoyl peroxide'. Those extra ingredients may hinder the effect of the Tretinoin cream. ***get a full 7-8 hours sleep! the medicine works its magic on your skin while you are asleep and rested.

Pros:

-Faded scars
-Cleared up skin
-Face is smooth and gorgeous

Cons:

-Took almost 3 months to begin to work.

I first got prescribed Tretinoin in August. At first, I was nervous to try it. For the first week, I saw no change, then out of nowhere, I began to see breakouts. After 3 months, my breakouts are almost gone, however I have been getting underground, painful pimples on my forehead. It has really lived up to the beautiful skin deal, scars on my face have faded and my skin is unbelievably soft! I was recently prescribed the .1%, moving up from the .05%, so hopefully that will fix the problem of the underground pimples. Definitely worth sticking through, I love that my skin is brighter and my horrible scars have faded from my cheeks. The first month or two arent exactly wonderful, but it's worth waiting for. Love it.

Pros:

none!

Cons:

left skin rly red and dry. broke me out real bad!

i thought that this would help me but it didn't! i started using it and it broke me out where i didn't even have any acne at all! i used the 0.02% and i read all the reviews where it states that it starts out bad but then gets better... i never saw the better.. would not recommend.

Pros:

- No more acne
- Helps scarring
- Light
- Smells better than most acne products
- Little goes long way

Cons:

- Seems to have "stained" my face red

I'd rather have a red face than have acne. Appears to be working on acne scars but I'm not sure. Good product, only downfall is the red face.

Pros:

Cleared up cystic acne in a matter of days.
Helped with deeper, more painful acne.
Helped my self-esteem.

Cons:

Dry skin. (To be expected, and could be fixed with moisturizer.)
Slight facial redness.
Could only be used at night.

This works. There's not much to say, but if you haven't given this a try, try it, please. I'm so glad I got this. But for the first week or so, just expect dryness/flakiness. But it's worth it, in the long run.

Pros:

Easy to use
Also prevents wrinkles
In expensive (with co-pay)
IT REALLY WORKS!

Cons:

Can be expensive (without insurance)
Can only be applied at nighttime
6-8 weeks before results

My doctor prescribed me generic tretinoin (brand-name Retin-A) for my severe acne. It took 6-8 weeks to see real results, but now my skin is 100% acne-free (something I haven't had since I was 13). It's very easy to use and works wonders if you're consistent. Just be sure to wash it off in the morning!

Pros:

It works (I use it at night); a little dab is all you need so tube lasts awhile; side benefit is it seems to improve fine lines and wrinkles

Cons:

Can be drying/irritating in the beginning, so apply with a light hand; Can be expensive if you don't have insurance that covers it.

I am using this for my acne at nighttime only. Has cleared up my skin in an amazing way. I had first tried the Micro .04% and it didn't work at all...once the doctor bumped me up to .1% it begin working. I use the Benzaclin in the am, so I assume between that and the Retin-A at night something is working. I pay $9.00 a tube and my insurance covers the rest (I think it runs well over $100 a tube).

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
