Pros:

Clears up acne noticeably!

Cons:

Your skin gets really dry, "especially around your chin and mouth areas." You break out alot on areas you havent before and acne gets worse in the first 3 weeks or so.

Just stick with it, its disheartning at first, but by about wk 5, theres a big diference, I'll check in again at wk 12 at share my expierence!!

Pros:

clears skin, reduces redness, makes skin glow, makes skin very soft

Cons:

makes pimples realllly red at first, for about 2-3 weeks, causes sensitivity like putting a shirt over my head hurt when it rubbed against my face, caused me a minor breakout

ive been on retin a for exactly 8 weeks and see a major improvement. i used to be covered in cysts and had severe acne. one of my derms told me to go on accutane but i didnt want to. i started taking birth control and im sure that helped straighten out my hormones thus reducing breakouts. i use this with an antibiotic. i only have 2 spots that are going away now, and 80 percent of my redness has decreased. my friends have been complimenting my face along with my family. thats something i havent heard in YEARS. i love retin a and feel as though ill be using it for life haha. i missed one day out of the past 8 weeks and it didnt break out or anything, it improved a bit from the break. i HIGHLY reccommend using this product, and to not quit during the first month or two because it takes awhile to see the good, but once the good hits, it feels awesome. i feel like i have a new face, and i cant wait til the 4-5 month mark seeing as thats the peak of this medication. retin a = <3

Pros:

it works, and i can tell you that it will work for you 100%, but it takes TIME!

Cons:

takes a very long time. peels and burns

its the best thing ive ever tried. i've had bad skin since the 6th grade. i'm now a junior and this is the only thing that has ever cleared my face. better yet, its getting rid of my acne scars to! listen, this thing takes time. it gets worse before it gets better, but with the way it works its pratically guarenteed to work. it took me about 3 months for the acne, but i have SEVERE pimples. just try it. i promise you will like it. and it makes your skin so refreshed. i'm so glad my docter perscribed me this stuff. (btw i use the generic brand, trentinoin gel .025% works just the same as retin a.)

Pros:

So far, it has clear my pimples

Cons:

SCARES, DRYNESS, & REDNESS

I am not sure how well it is working since I am using DUAC as well. It seems to be getting worse, but I guess that is how it works.

Pros:

Skintone/pigmentation scars seems to be looking more even. I haven't been on the medicine long enough to see a considerable difference in preventing acne, but the medicine seems to get rid of discolored skin from old scars very quickly.

Cons:

Unbelievable dryness on the face. It hurt to apply moisturizer and the medicine itself. Developed a rash on my neck from applying medicine to the jawline.

I am currently using Tretinoin cream 0.05% once a day at night. In the morning, I use Benzacline. I have mild acne and annoying cystic acne that affects my nose, temples, and jawline. When I first started, my skin was unbelievably dry and flaky. It was very painful. Since I've started using Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer, the discomfort has been reduced considerably. I apply a liberal amount in the morning after waiting for the benzacline to dry. Please make sure to let your face dry completely, about 10-20 mins before applying Tretinoin. I made the mistake of applying the cream when my face was not dry. My face was ok, but my neck got very irritated and itchy when I was lying in bed. It was so itchy I broke into a rash and I couldn't sleep. This went on for 2 days. I remedied this problem by waiting for my face to dry completely and by applying the medicine carefully to my jawline. Most notable improvement is that the skintone around my jawline is looking unbelievabl

Pros:

cleared blackheads on my forehead, also made it smoother

Cons:

Takes a while (>8weeks)

it worked pretty good for me. cleared blackheads on my forehead. still get a few postules once in a while, but those aren't as painful as before. it definitely made my skin smoother though. i feel that retin a is only good for blackheads, and asked my dermatologist about it and he also said that retin a is mostly used to treat black and whiteheads. so i am satisfied with it since retin a did what it's supposed to do. as far as drying and peeling is concerned, it did not affect me at all, and i tend to put a lot more than the recommended amount (one pea size, but i use amount equivalent to around 2-4 peas).

Pros:

This will make unattractive skin beautiful. It's an absolute miracle

Cons:

If used incorrectly, you resemble an alligator and suffer.

Wait 1/2 hour after washing your face to apply a tiny pea sized amount of retin-a mixed with a moisturizer - mixing it will make the small amount cover your whole face. If there's any moisture left in/on your skin from washing, it causes more irritation, skin must be totally dry. Start slowly, every three days, then every two, then every day. If you do it right you'll have almost no side effects. The cream is better than the gel for mixing with a lotion.

Pros:

This stuff is wonderful. I get constant compliments on my "glowing skin," and am often mistaken as a kid in high school (I'm 23 w/ 2 BA degrees & entering grad). When I applied for a p-t job recently, I was reminded that I had to be 18 to apply!

Cons:

*Flaking: I suffered extensive flaking until I finally found a combination of products that worked for me.
*Sunburn: You must wear SPF 15 or 30, and there are "no ifs, ands, or buts" about it. If you don't, prepare to suffer the sunburn from h*ll.

*Retin-A is extremely cheap. I can buy a tube from Wal-Mart for $35 without insurance ($7 with my insurance), and it lasts for 2-3 months. *With the right combination of products, irritation is minimal. "Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter without Me" by Paula Begoun is a great resource for finding effective yet inexpensive products. *Personally, the following regimen has worked extremely well for me: -In the morning, cleanse with Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser. Follow with an antioxidant serum. Once dry, apply Neutrogena Healthy Defense Moisturizer SPF 30. It sounds gross, but my skin rubs off in weird little balls; massaging it off takes care of flaking. Once done, apply more moisturizer and follow with Covergirl Aquasmooth SPF 15 foundation. -At night, cleanse with Neutrogena cleanser and follow with antioxidant serum. Wait 30 minutes, then apply a small amount of Retin-A .1% cream. *I have no flaking, stinging, or pain, and my derm approved of this r

Has cleared my face completely!! Skin is Firmer and wrinkles are looking better. Scars have faded almost completely. Better skin tone. Less oil production.

Cons:

peeling!!

This does work really well. It took a good 3-4 months. But the results were worth it. It's scary in the beginnging. But stick with it. My face now looks poreless and smooth. Much better that what I started with. I will never stop using this!!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
