Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

HMMM saw my sisters face clear up, all i can say is i will have to give it time, right now though im breaking out alittle but its drying the acne up, and honestly it depends on what kind of skin you have, some people should not use this product.

Cons:

the acne and peeling skin, im a sufferer of adult acne

hmmm see what it will do w/ for you. it takes patience and risks if your acne is that bothersome/bad then see what it will do, i guess it goes by what kinda skin you have and how it will react to this product, the begining is negative but time and use of the product it clears up, thats why its prescription grade quality for ya, it is a drug for a reason people, not a miracle cure all. but it is a good product (tretnoin is known for many good properties, as long as u use sun screen!!!!!!!!)

Pros:

Smoothens out the skin. Only needs to be applied once a day or every other day after many month of use. Makes the zitz smaller.

Cons:

Rough in the beginning. Can take many many month to get improvements. Causes flaking. Causing vulnerability against the sun. Itching.

Need at least 6 month of usage before you can express anything about a product that contains Tretinoin. I have read some reviews here and most have just used it for perhaps some days to up to maybe a month. After 1 year you can then say, it worked or it did not work. I have used it for soon 6 month and it has helped to make my skin smoother and smaller break outs. I hope it can clear me 100% in another 6 month.

Pros:

none

Cons:

This product has been an absolute nightmare. It burns through layers of skin, leaving your face red, burned and scabby. Meanwhile, it dredges up tons of tiny whiteheads and large, sore bumps.

Unless you have severe acne, Do NOT use Retin A! If your skin is even moderately sensitive, Do NOT use Retin A. In only a week this crap has burned off large chunks of my skin and created peeling blisters that I am desperately trying to treat with aloe vera and lotion. I feel like I've just gotten a chemical peel... I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. It takes a moderate complexion with a few zits here and there and a sprinkling of small pimples and it burns off every blemish along with the accompanying layers of skin. My face is so burned and blistered--I look like I have been used as an ash tray. My mom is now testing the Retin A on her feet to see if it will burn off the callouses, which is probably the only feasible use for this sh*tty medication.

Pros:

eventually cleared up acne
stronger than any over the counter med i tried

Cons:

huge breakouts at first
my face flaked off and it was disgusting

if you are desperate for something that works like i was, try it. after it gets rid of all your pimples over the period of a few weeks you will have significantly clearer skin. however, you NEED to use a moisturizer! i wear heavy makeup daily because of my acne, and my face was peeling off so bad at one point that i was FORCED to go to school without makeup on because every time i would attempt to apply it my skin would just flake off, it was horrible. i'm starting to use it again after getting fed up and taking a break, but i'm desperate and i know that despite the dryness this DOES work. for me it's either over the counter products that aren't strong enough, or strong products such as this that cause irritation and peeling but do work. i'm not sure what i prefer.

Pros:

it works to clear acne by exfoliating

Cons:

a lil bit drying

When I was in my early teens, Retin a did nothing for my moderatae-severe acne. Now in my early 30's, Retin a has totally cleared up my mild acne, and my skin looks great. What few shallow scars I had are starting to disappear. I have been using the .025 gel (creams of all kinds break out my skin) for almost a month now. I've had no breakouts. The Retin a improved my skin from the 1st night I used it. The secret is to start out just using it every other night-then when your skin is ready use it nightly.

Pros:

Softer, younger looking skin. Fading acne scars.

Cons:

Severe outbreaks, super sensitive skin, peeling, flaking, irritation.

I've only been using this product for a week but after the first "big reveal" aka peeling took place, my skin underneath was softer and the scars were a lot less noticable. I've been breaking out a lot more but that's to be expected. I am just hoping my face starts clearing up soon.

Pros:

Works well to get rid of whiteheads.

Cons:

Takes a while before you see results.

I've used this product for about a year and got wonderful results after a few months. It got rid of all of my whiteheads and bumps, though I still have the occasional breakout. Peeling isn't bad, I just rub off all of the dead skin when I wash my face in the morning. Remember, though, DO NOT USE TOO MUCH!!!

Pros:

Clears up acne

Cons:

None

I was prescribed Tretinoin to use in conjunction with a benzoyl peroxide wash and minocycline (antibiotic). This combination has proven to be very effective for me. I cannot attribute the improvement in my skin solely to the tretinoin, but it has definitely improved. I saw improvement within a month of using this regime. A lot of other patients complained about dryness and peeling with tretinoin, I did not have these side effects (except for some slight peeling on the tip of my nose, but a little moisturizer fixed that). My skin is a lot smoother now and the only pimples I get are not noticeable by the eye, I can feel them, but they go away after a day or two. I get fewer pimples and not as often.

Pros:

Fades scars, new acne heals quickly, makes skin more radiant since you are shedding skin at a more rapid pace than usual - no need to exfoliate

Cons:

Takes a long time to work. The process of purging your skin can be really discouraging.

I am using Retin A in combination with Minocycline and Duac for about 3 months now. The first 2 months were pretty horrible. Tons of new breakouts, scars, and dry skin which was impossible to cover up with makeup so I had to go out just like that. Was ready to give up on it and yell at my doctor but about 2 weeks ago, I stopped having breakouts all together. Maybe it was being on vacation, being in the sun and sweating a lot that helped but since then, I have been clear. Scars are fading and the cystic acne I had has slowly moved to the surface so no more bumps when I touch my face. It took about 10-11 weeks for this to really show results, but now that it finally has, I'm really happy. Just stick with it!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
