Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

It takes a while to work, but it gradually takes away your acne and smooths you skin leaving you without scars or "dimples", It has skin firming effects too.

Cons:

It flakes your skin for the first three weeks at most, but a mosturizer and a scrub will get rid of the flakes. It brings out all your underlying acne first, so breakouts may happen (It did not for me, though) It DOESN'T get rid of blackheads! ARGH!

It does work, and it firms your skin, you can't go wrong.

Pros:

Improves texture of skin, gets rid of acne, afforable

Cons:

Caused some very minor flaking on my nose, some dryness which was fixed after applying lotion

I've been using it once a day for a month and my skin is looking better than it has in years. I have only a couple blackheads on my nose left and the rest of my face is clearing up nicely. I have noticed I still am getting a few red bumnps-I think they're pimples never totally form and they're gone within a couple days. The texture of my skin is a lot softer and smoother. My derm told me to lightly exfoliate once a week to help remove dead skin cells. I have not broken out so I think it's working, I'll be updating in a couple months to see if it worked

Pros:

I think it works for any kind of acne...even the non cystic flat inflammatory type which used to plague my cheeks an jawline

Cons:

I couldn't wear my contact lenses because of the dryness. Couldn't work out too much in the gym becuase of joint pain( I had become an aerobic freak...anything to improve my skin)

PLEASE DO NOT DELAY! GET YOURSELF ON THIS NOW! I was in acne agony for 10 years. I never had the cystic, deep types so I thought my acne was never bad enough. But Roaccutane worked for me. Sadly, because I waited so long, I have so many horrible scars. Please don't make the same mistake. Try out other acne treatments for maximum one yr if you've only now started to get acne and then if they don't clear you up at least 90% insist on getting on accutane

Cons:

Smells funny and it stings if you have open blemishes

Use it-it works Just give it time

Pros:

helps to stop ur skin from breaking out

Cons:

u will continue to get some breakouts, but much less than before retin-a...make ur skin flaky, but just use a mositizrer like aloe vera or get one from ur dermatologist

it really isnt that great didnt really help with the acne marks left from old acne

Pros:

The product does help some small zits on the surface of the skin "dry out" quicker. So there may be a bit of a use as a "spot treatment" (but be prepared, you may notice some redness around the treated area a few days later.)

Cons:

On sensitive skin, causes much redness (irritation) and you will undergo a long period of your skin looking worse before it may (or may not) improve. Also, what they don't tell you, is once the pimples come and go, they often leave many "dark spots".

PLEASE, PLEASE consider strongly whether you want to even begin using this product!! I cannot emphasize this enough. Dermatologists I've been to often just prescribe this right away it seems. My skin type: a) Had mild to moderate acne since high school (now in mid 30's) b) Gets fairly oily during the day c) KEY: Had many subtle "pimples underneath the surface" deep down (hardly even visible until using this product) I thought I would give it a shot for the base 3-month period, only to find (being very honest here) that it: a) Caused a lot of redness b) Took a long time for pimples that did come to the surface to go away c) *** Left many unhealed brown marks on face even after pimple had come to surface and dried out. If you have very "surfacy" pimples (i.e. - not many deep under the skin) then perhaps this may work for you. But I SUFFERED with low self-esteem for 3 months and it took 6 months (with some Aloe Vera help) for my face to return to norma

Pros:

You know it works

Cons:

the process of using it

Use Aquaphor to battle the dryness. It is recommended by Dermatologist's for irritation to the skin. I have only been on Retin A Micro for 5 days and the peeling is intense. I have hormonal acne around my jawline and chin. After the 2nd day, I developed a blister on my shin from it. Yeah, it's real fun. But then I remembered Aquaphor, so I tried it, not alot, alittle goes a long way. but after an hour my skin looked great! and now i can seriously tell how well Retin A is working. Try it, it truly helps. Tip: If you feel slick, you used to much. **If you want to use make-up, apply Aquaphor, then wait 10 minutes, apply spf (for day), and wait 5 minutes, then apply makeup.

Pros:

Hopefully some come soon!

Cons:

My face looks worse than it has in a few years.

Just two weeks ago I was using Differin at night mixed with a klaron cream in the morning and using clearasil sensitive skin face wash 2 times a day sometimes 3 times and my face looked pretty good after about 4 or 5 weeks, then for about 3 or 4 it just maintained its ground so I still had a few spots. I went home for a few days and visited my dermatologist starting Tuesday night (6 nights ago) she put me on retin a micro .1 (the yellow gel kind) every other night and then kept me using differin every other night. She also put me on a nivea face wash to be used in the morning and at night and a nivea extra soothing cleanser to use when needed. So far all that I have noticed is that the spots I had have begun to flare up, and that even new red marks are starting to come in. I would just like a few people to leave me some insurance that this product really does work, and when do the beneficial effects start taking place? Can u use makeup with this produ

Pros:

got rid of my blackheads

Cons:

did nothing for my acne and dried up my face

I used retin a micro and the only good thing was that it got rid of my blackheads but other than that it did nothing for my acne. I even got more cysts which has caused my scarring..

Pros:

Helps healing
Decreases healing time
Improves skin's clarity

Cons:

Lots of peeling which causes breakouts
Long adjustment period

I have had some serious initial breakouts with this which has made it difficult to stick with. The only saving grace is that everything heals really quickly and nicely. Once the initial period (~6 weeks) is completed, everything should settle down. I can't wait to get there!!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
