Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Works about the same as the other two topical retinoids, tazarotene and adapalene, and lands in the middle of those two when it comes to side effects. Should provide partial clearing, but comes with sensitivity when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer but it should help reduce acne.

Pros:

I don't seem to get the huge annoying pimples anymore. Just little ones that if LEFT ALONE will go away in a day or so.

Cons:

When I first started I got ton and I mean tons of whiteheads that seem to have come out of nowhere. The skin around my mouth is ALWAYS dry, red and flaky.

After approx. 2 months of use I am realizing that this is just not the product for me. Unfortunatly none of the treatments my Dr. has worked for me. I am allergic to just about every antibiotic out there and already have depression and can't take the accutane. I wonder what next? If anybody has any suggestions...

Pros:

Most effective treatment used. 48 yrs. old and have had acne since 17 yrs. old. Skin looks much better. One tube lasts almost 4 to 5 months.

Cons:

Cost for 0.05% Tretonin was $62.00 for a tube without insurance coverage. The low payments everyone else had must have been insurance co-pays.

Took a couple of months to notice a difference. Not much initial outbreak. My instructions say to wait 20 to 30 minutes for face to dry before application. Diet has always been a factor in my breakouts. Don't believe the hype that it doesn't have an effect. Greasy hamburgers, french fries, potato chips, fried foods and greasy pizza will always make me break out within 2 days after eating. Also, just about any moisturizer (some even oil free) make me get pimples.

Pros:

none yet

Cons:

lots of breakouts (little pimples all over my face) redness because of dryness

Its been 4 months and a week since i started to use Retisol-a cream 0.01% and I take 50 mg of minocylin once a day and no improvement. I have hundred of little pimples all over my face and in places I never used to have! Can somebody please tell me if they experienced it as well and if I have to be patient and stick to it? Or nobody had that and its just not working&?

Pros:

Gets rid of pimples, keeps them from coming back

Cons:

Lots of redness, initial breakouts, takes forever to work, dry skin

I started using Retin-A Micro four months ago. At first I was skeptical, there were days where I thought my acne would never get better (I had severe cystic acne) It had been possible to get an Accutane perscription but I didn't want to try that quite yet, so I told my derm to put me on Retin-A and some Doxycycline. Initial Breakouts were terrible, my skin got worse then it had ever been. However, and I cannot stress this enough, just STICK with it. If you have the self discipline to use it everynight, your acne will get better. In fact, if it gets worse the first few weeks it's only a sign that the medicine is working. My severe forhead acne has all but dissapeared. I currently have about 3 or 4 new bumps, with an average of one new pimple showing up everyday. However, when you compare it to before (when I literally had about 25-30 pimpels on my head at one time) you can see how much of a difference Retin-A Micro has done. It changed my life.

Pros:

my skin is completely clear now! I use to have cystic acne and now I get very few breakouts (tiny ones that go away in 3 days if i ever get any)

Cons:

at first my skin was peeling but that went away in 2 weeks. It took about 7 weeks until I was completely acne free. Acne got worse before it got better.

It worked for me! Since I was always having a problem with cystic acne (esp. my chin) I feel ok about not wearing makeup and show my face more in public instead of hiding like i use to. I had been prescribed Differin + an antibiotic before this and that did absolutely nothing for me. My Derm prescribed me this and i'm also on the antibiotic Doryx. I have been using this since Mid December '07

Pros:

Helped to clear my acne a lot, removed a lot of my cystic acne and revealed smoother skin underneath

Cons:

Dryness, peeling, acne lesions under the skin become more prevalent but fade with time, sunburn, gets worse before it gets better

It's not a quick fix, requires time and patience but works really well for me. Apply on face with moisturizer 30 minutes after washing to avoid burning sensation. Use LOTS of sunscreen on your face. The results are worth it if you can stand the dryness and peeling for a few weeks. Best if used 2-3 times a week.

Pros:

This worked the best for me! I am so happy with the results

Cons:

Face does peel a lot but just use a wash cloth to cleanse your face to get rid of flaky skin

This got rid of pimples, blackheads and made my skin smooth!

Pros:

works great, best acne product out there

Cons:

none, everyone talks about flaky skin but i never got that. breakout period is a little embarassing

after about 3 days you will see results, after about the first week though the breakout period begins. didnt last long for me (about a week) which isnt really a bad thing because the cream brings up all ur pimples and washes them away. it feels great being able to have confidence in myself again. i just ant to let u know i would never take the time to write something like this cuz im so lazy, but that is how strongly i feel about this product. get clear now retin a works

Pros:

my skin felt really soft when it was not peeling or chapped

Cons:

IT was very painful and i had to quit using it because I had horrible reactions. My face got to the point where it was chapped and felt skaley and my doctor cut me off and said not to use it anymore.

It did not stop any of my acne it just made my face look worse it was constantly red and peeling ..it was very painful and i hated leaving the house because people would look at me funny. Everyone at work thought I was crazy because I continued to use it as long as I did hoping it was just the first few weeks that I would have these problems. fnially i called my doctor and she said No More .. my skin was just to sensitve and the affects where to strong.. Im now going to try proactive ... There is nothing like having adult acne. I thought I would be lucky enough to grow out of it but I guess not

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
