Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

seems to be getting rid of scars, reforming my skin, pimples shrinking?

Cons:

makes my skin really really greasy and oily, breakout on nose

i am a 16 yr old male using this as my last resort before accutane so ive pretty much tried everything...hoping this works. second night of application so still pretty early, but it seems to be completely changing the texture of my skin. good/bad? im not sure yet. seems to be fading my scars, getting rid of a few pimples kinda?? only problem is, my skin becomes greasy, not much of a relief from my already oily skin. my nose is broken out and irritated from tazorac. its greasy but painful like skin is burnt if that makes any sense..too early to tell but i hope it works.

Pros:

Seems to be bringing oils/dirt to surface. Skin is smooth once peels, although not all is peeling.

Cons:

Does take time - I am in week 5 and still experiencing the purging process. Parts of skin are clear and smooth, but still getting new "bumps".

Seems to be working. Willing to wait for the full 12 weeks!

Pros:

It seemed to work for me when I started using it a year or two ago. I used it for over a year solid, every night. I used the gel and never experienced drying or peeling. My skin is pretty resilient to becoming chapped or over dried.

Cons:

It left behind a lot hyperpigmentation. This was almost as bad as acne because from far away it looked like my acne was still there.

It takes a while to work and can be harsh to most. I was also on anti-biotics during the Tazorac. (Which I regret. Anti-biotics are not the answer, its like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound) It is supposedly an aid for hyperpigmentation but I'll tell you the truth that derms won't. Time, stopping further breakouts and some surprisingly common products will help you more with red marks. All in all, I would try the holistic route. I know, I know it sounds stupid but it makes so much sense when you do your research. Remember: The drug companies want to you to believe the only way to cure your acne is to use their expensive products. (Not simple things like internal cleansing and eating a acne-free diet.) It's all about money!

Pros:

None

Cons:

Everything

This is one of the worst products I have ever used. It tells you that your face may get worst for the first couple of weeks, but my face got so bad that I can't even get it back to the way it was before I started using Tazorac. It has done nothing good for my skin, and now I don't even know how to fix the damage it has done.

Pros:

Help my skin clear up.major success

Cons:

my mouth is extremly dry @ times and when applied on the neck or chest then it peels really bad

TAZORAC works!!!!!!!! at the beginning i was so discouraged because of how my skin was looking. then as i started to use it religiously then i could see the decrease in my acne. i was so proud plus i heard it works better than proactive. i highly recomend it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros:

Reduced the number of acne breakouts-smoother skin.

Cons:

The acne spots I have now, while fewer, are worse and I resemble a teenage boy...not the "cool" teenage boy but the A.V. dork who wears a retainer and has social problems.

I've only been on this for about 2 weeks. My skin is red (a friend asked me if I went tanning) and is peeling all over. I'm caking on the the lotion to help with that, and going to try to stick with it for at least 12 weeks like it says. I'm also on Bactrim and wash my face with Cetaphil anti-bacterial soap. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will work. Please work. I don't want to look like I'm going through puberty at 24.

Pros:

It worked for me. 46 years old with hormone induced acne. Antibiotic wasn't very helpful. This totally worked. I'm 100% clear.

Cons:

Can be drying. I had to learn my tolerance level. I overdid it at first and had the whole peeling/burning experience. Now I apply a thin layer of moisturizer, then the Taz. Also, I did experience the "gets worse before it get better" phenomenon.

This is the fist skin care product (Rx or OTC) that I've used that REALLY lives up to it's claim. You do really have to follow the mfg. directions. Moisturize first, then a very tiny amount. I haven't managed to make a "pea sized" drop cover my whole face. But, I do try to use as little as possible. And, you'll want to quit when it gets "worse before it gets better", but I'm sure glad I hung in there.

Pros:

if you are patient, you will see improvement. DO USE A THIN LAYER OF MOISTURIZER FIRST! Then a thin layer of Taz! This will prevent redness, burning, drying, and peeling! DermaE is a great natural cream to try.

Cons:

BE CAreful in the sun, and yes, it may get worse before better, but persevere!!

is effective, but ladies, those monthly hormones still manage to cause breakouts--Taz or no Taz. Those with severe acne--it can be managed, but results may not be as good--I highly recommend looking at your diet, products you use, and going to see a holistic doctor--derms just want to push antibiotics which may or may not work, and even if they do in the short term--you can't stay on them forever and they'll make you very sick and weaken your immune system.

Pros:

Absolutely the best product I have ever used for acne treatment. I have moderate acne due to insulin resistance. After a month, my skin was clear and stayed clear! My skin felt like a 16 year old's skin too!

Cons:

You really do have to wait out the redness. I had to go to a corporate conference, and my face was bright red and peeling all over. I was so embarrassed. But two or three weeks later, voila, perfect skin.

Just wait it out. Please don't give up on it for the first eight weeks. Yes, I know your face will turn bright red, and will kinda burn, and it will peel like crazy. It's worth it though. Seriously. Especially if you have insurance that will cover it. I stopped using it awhile back, and went on the Regimen, then switched over to ProActiv. I have decided to go back on my Tazorac though, because my acne just isn't getting cleared up despite my religious use of the products. The Regimen's BP is too heavy for my face, even after working it all into the skin. But it is indeed effective. Also, for us women, the Tazorac will make your skin feel like a baby's butt, because it's basically peeling the layers off your face. Just grin and bear the first four to six weeks. You will love it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
