Pros:

skin is clearing up, texture is smooth

Cons:

makes face really red, peeling around mouth

I have been using tazorac for a week and a half now. i know its too early to really see what will happen, but my dermoltogist is amazing and even though this product is making my skin really red and itching i am going to stick with it because the texture of my skin is really even and my dermo promise the color will be with time... i cant wait to see the results...and get past this horrible first month...

Pros:

It has cleared up my acne!! I occassionally get a break out. My Dr. says that is normal due to hormone changes. My skin is dry so I use a good moisturizer. I like this product alot

Cons:

It took about a month to completely clear my skin. My skin was worse before it got better. The wait was worth it.

I would recommend this product.

Pros:

evens skin tone, clears acne, shrinks appearance of pores

Cons:

burns, itches, peels, makes my face very red (temporarily)

it works- but definitely isn't without some side effects. it will make your acne worse initially, but it clears pretty quickly. overall, a really strong cream that does the job really reaaly well!

Pros:

This is the only medication that cleared up my skin. Before this medication, I have tried so many prescriptions and off-the-counter medications and none of them worked. I don't have any acne on my face anymore, and now I'm using it on my back too.

Cons:

It takes time and you have to be patient. It dries and peels the skin, but that's all your dead skin cells, so don't think its worsening the situation. When you stop using it, your acne comes back. And, when the skin peels, oh boy!...it burns so much

Get it!...just bear with the pain for like two weeks and you will be one happy camper!

Pros:

exfoliates, does clear acne (a least for me)

Cons:

very dry skin, peeling near mouth, nose and forehead

I works, but when I was my face in the morning and put on my moisturizer, it BURNS LIKE HELL. And then I put on my make up and it burns like hell, but a little less. I hope this goes away soon.

Pros:

Cons:

making my skin worse and very dry.

I just started using this cream and I have been getting very depressed because my acne keeps getting worse. I have been on it for aprox 3 weeks now and dont even want to go out because I hate the way I look. I don't know if I should stick with it or if it's making things worse and I should get off of it! HELP!!:(

Pros:

Cleared son's skin and made it more even

Cons:

Peeling around mouth

When my sons actually followed the doctor's directions and worked gradually up to using it daily, the results were remarkable. Don't use it around the mouth or eyes as it causes excessive drying and even cracking. Allow your skin to dry for 20 minutes before applying, as damp skin leads to an increase in the drying and peeling side effects. And remember to use the recommended spf moisturizer in conjunction with it every day.

Pros:

Cleared up body acne initially after Differin and oral antibiotics became ineffective.

Cons:

Caused extreme peeling on my face, which actually led to an increase in my blackheads. It lost effectiveness on my back after a few years. It is also very expensive, even with fantastic Rx drug coverage.

I began using the 0.05% strength about 7 years ago and increased to the 0.1% strength about 5 years ago. I have used it on and off since then. It works best for body acne, particularly on the back and shoulders, as these areas are least susceptible to Tazorac's harsh side effects. I used it in combination with clindamycin, and it worked fairly well in clearing up and preventing future acne. However, it must be used EVERY day to maintain the difference. I was hoping to wean myself off of Rx acne medication after almost 10 years of using it, but I've never been able to. It is a poor choice for facial use. Unless you have extremely oily skin that never flakes, I wouldn't recommend this product. It made my skin oily, extremely sensitive and flaky. Makeup would flake off my skin and lotions mixed with flakes to create an unsightly paste. The excessive flaking and oil made blackheads much worse. I stopped using it on my face about a year ago, and my skin improved dramatically.
August 26, 2007

Pros:

none, so far

Cons:

Seems to worsen acne, seriously irritates the skin, increases susceptibility to sun burns, causes massive peeling/flaking.

I'm sure that effectiveness varies from person to person, but Tazorac had definitely not worked for me. I've been using it consistently for more than a year and I've finally decided to give up because it only seems to worsen the acne on my face and back and it makes my face peel horribly.

Pros:

My skin is completely clear and I have no scars at all - I have used it for 4 years now. I love it, nothing else worked for me.

Cons:

Red at first & some pealing. Then I started using vaseline on my face at night about 30 minutes after I put on the cream & had better results without the redness & peeling. I quit using the vaseline after about a month. Noticed oily skin this year.

Nothing else worked for me and I tried over the counter, infomercials and other prescriptions. I was so unhappy before this product. You do have to follow the doctors directions exactly and be patient. My doctor told me exactly what to expect and he was right. I am very pleased with this product. On the cost I am not sure as my insurance covers it completely and it lasts a very long time.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
