Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

it cleared my skin after a month. my face got worse before it got better. really have to be patient. waited 20 minutes after i wash my face at night then i would apply a pea size amount to face. small amount works wonders.

Cons:

acne worsened before it got better.

U really have to be patient. stick with it and you will love it.

Pros:

This stuff really worked for me. Almost no side effects, my insurance pays for it so it only costs me around $20 a year or so (WAY cheaper than Proactiv), and it is super-easy to use.

Cons:

A little dryness when I started. I started on every other day applications, which helped. Don't use too much of it either; a little bit really works as well as a lot, without all the dryness.

This stuff was a miracle drug for me. I had suffered from acne for years (I'm a male) and tried every OTC available, including Proactive which didn't work at all for me. The derm put me on this every evening, Duac every morning, a Benzoyl wash, and an antibiotic. I have since stopped the antibiotic (side effects) and have only been truly faithful with the Tazorac and have had almost no acne whatsoever for the past two years. I experienced very mild dryness with no redness and no peeling, so the side effects were minimal and are now nonexistent. Everyone's skin is different (or else a derm's job would be too easy) so you may have different results. It really worked for me and would not use anything else.

Pros:

Peeled away acne pretty quick. Really takes a few 2-4 weeks to get the old dead skin off but after skin is much clearer. Just have to be consistant using it.

Cons:

Makes skin dry but tolerable if you moisturize. Does seem to make you break out in places you normally wouldn't at first to purge all the dead layers.

I would recommend it to people. I have used it for years and overall am happy with it.

Pros:

Dryness and makes your skin look oily

Cons:

clears up acne

I had acne in the 8th grade and decided to visit a derm. They told me to use tazorac. I used it and it had little effect. But now im in the 11th and i have the same problem and the derm gave it to me again. so now i use benzyol peroxide and tazorac at night. It is a real good product. The only thing is the peeling.I cant help to peal the skin off and that can cause acne scaring so i suggest you dont do that. But far as usage, i recomended to anyone with bad acne

Pros:

Clears up acne in days. Can be used for spot treatment as well. Awesome.

Cons:

Initially, or when too much is used, it can dry up the skin pretty badly. Use Neutrogena moisturizer , it helps considerably.

Definitely use this product. The only side effect I've had is the dryness, but moisturizer fixes it. When you pick up the Tazorac, grab a bottle of neutrogena as well. Use it for 2 weeks and you'll be very happy.

Pros:

New acne is less frequent, not as "angry" when it appears, and goes away faster.

Cons:

Dry skin. I recommend Clean&Clear Moisturizer and use multiple times a day.

Although I havent had it long, I can already see improvements. My skin has had sever acne for 4 years and has never looked as clear as it has the past two weeks. The only thing I was worried about was during the first week, my acne really got bad but the dermatologist said keep on and sure enough, it is clearing up. Avoid picking at your skin because that causes more flakes and acne.

Pros:

.1% cream. Cleared my face and shoulders within 3 months and im currently on my 4th month on this and my face is so smooth now but i still have thoes redmarks but they have faded alot. dont apply directly mix a pea sized ammount with enough moisturiz

Cons:

Pretty much raped my face the first 4 weeks lol. if i were to drag my sleeve acros my face u would see a bunch of shredded skin.

WORKS! give it time. Dont pick your skin or scrub your face, u wil develop raw spots and when u apply the tazorac it WILL burn and dont spot treat lol thats just a waste. 1 perscription filling is about 50 dolla with insurance and lasts about a year (2 30gram tubes)

Pros:

Got results after about three weeks. Actually feels and looks like its doing something.

Cons:

Cream kinda has a greasy feeling. Makes your face sore, red, and peel like crazy. I'm talkin chunks falling off your face! Can't tan or go out in the sun a whole lot.

Sucks balls for the first week or so but starts to yield good results after that. I cut back to every other night and so far am blemish free. You may be going to the restroom a couple times a day at first just to moisturize your face. Turns over the skin cells really fast so after awhile scars and marks will fade. Crap is hella expensive so either get your insurance to pick it up or steal it. Your Doc may be hesitate to prescribe but be persistent.

Pros:

It cleared up most of my acne.

Cons:

It takes a bit of time for this stuff to actually start working. In the process of waiting those weeks, your face may become very ithcy and red. Lots of peeling (in my case). This stuff is also a bit expensive.

I've been using this product for over a year now. I started using only the 0.05% strength. It cleared most of my acne up (but didn't get rid of little bumps). In September 2007, I asked my doc if I could try the full strength. Since then, my skin has only been average. When using the 0.05%, I was able to exfoliate at least twice a week (because I have oily skin). But now, I'm not able to exfoliate at all because it would lead to drying of the skin and then LOTS of peeling. I'm talking about snowflake-sized skin bits all over my shoulders and collar. There has been many occasions where I had to resort to using Vaseline as my day-time moisturizer in order to cover the flakiness. So, I've only been using it a few times a week now (because of the effects) instead of every night--hence the reason a bit of my acne came back. I would probably switch back to 0.05% just because it worked well for me. I still haven't been able to use the full strength version daily and I started this in Sept

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
