Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

None!!!!

Cons:

Burns, Hurts face for a while after, Makes acne worse

Bottom line this didnt work for me at all. I was put on this and a med and this cream just burned the crap out of my face. It hurts to just wash it with soap and everyone notices it is worse when i started the cream. Dont use it!!!

Pros:

Cleared up facial, chest, and back acne. Left my skin really smooth.

Cons:

The first month is rough. Lots of itching, peeling, and redness. Don't give up though! No matter what. If it hurts bad, a day break from it helps a lot.

I had really embarassing back and chest acne that caused me not to be able to wear anything other than t-shirts. I was really tired of it, and my face was kind of bad too. I've been using Taz for 2 months now, and my chest is perfect, my back is about 90% better than it was (there are a few scars), and my face is very clear. My advice is not to give up on it because it took me about 2 months to really get clear, but I am sooo happy I did it now.

Pros:

No Pro's yet, but I've only been at it for two weeks

Cons:

My face feels / looks like an oil slick. I feel dirty and grimy and shiny and in spite of it all, I am in it to win it.

I just wasn't prepared for the constants oiliness I am experiencing with Tazarotene. I didn't have many pimples, my main reason for using the product is to help diminish fine lines and wrinkling. But after using this product - I am left wondering how my skin can manage to be both severely oily and severely dry and flaky at the same time. How does that happen? I wish my Dermatologist had been more forthcoming regarding the use or Retin-A type products. I certanly would have chosen another route.

Pros:

It lasts along time! It somewhat keeps my acne under control.

Cons:

Doesnt work for combination skin! Doesnt help what so ever on blackheads! It kinda dries my skin but then my face gets oily!

Ive used it for a very long time and i still get breakouts! It doesnt really work even though my doctor keeps me on it!

Pros:

seems to work, cheap because of insurance

Cons:

not so great in the beginning, may burn at first and is extremely drying (before your skin gets used to it)

I began using tazorac about a month or so ago. I started and used it for a few days, then stopped because it burnt so bad (made my face itch) and made me break out worse. Just recently, maybe 3 days ago, I began using it again and am not experiencing the same effects I did before. When I shower, I wash my face with St. Ive's face wash for acne prone skin, apply my oil-free moisturizer and rinse it off (yes, I rinse it off!). When I'm all done and my face is dry I apply a small bit of tazorac on my face before bed (only once daily). Like a pea size on my forehead (where it's the worst for me), on the sides of my nose, above my mouth, and near my hairline. It doesn't burn at all anymore and I think I am seeing positive effects. But one of the best tips I can give anyone is BE GENTLE with your face- don't scrub hard. And wear oil-free makeup as I do. Good luck!

Pros:

Works fast

Cons:

None, except for maybe the price.

I've been using Avage for a little over 2 months. It's been great! I use it in conjunction with spironolactone and my face has improved dramatically. I've been on tons of prescriptions, including Accutane, and none have completely controlled the cystic acne I started to get after the birth of my daughter (13 years ago!!!!). My derm wrote me a script for it, and it was $168!!!! When I go see him, I'm going to ask for Tazorac cream instead because it seems to be cheaper (probably because it's not marketed for anti-aging) even though it has the exact same ingredients. But, I'll continue to use this as long as possible. I've seen a great improvement in the clarity and texture of my skin.

Pros:

Complexion more even toned...I guess...

Cons:

Where do I begin- UNBEARABLE initial breakout, scars where I never had scars before, horrible peeling in the beginning of treatment, gave cysts when I never had them, oh- and it doesn't work!!!!

This stuff is supposed to work after the 'magic' three month mark, it didn't. I am on FOUR months of this and I don't even want to go out in public. Before i started this .1% tazorac gel my skin was almost clear with one or two pimples. But i couldn't get it to be perfectly clear. NOW i regret ever even googling tazorac. The initial whole 3 months where awful, my face was covered with big painful zits and cystic acne. The peeling was just unfair. Now, I used this every night, with cetaphil moisturizer before hand just like your supposed to. I wash with cetaphil face wash for sensitive skin.. I eat mostly organic, and I'm on birth control! with that combination of things I should look completely clear by now. Don't do this to yourself. For me it was not worth it at all. My skin cleared up for 3 days which gave me false hope bc it went right back to 10 breakouts at a time. TAZORAC=BACON GREASE If i rubbed that on my face every night it would have the same effect.

Pros:

Clears up acne and prevents new acne from forming.

Cons:

Peeling, dryness and redness the first few weeks.

After using Taz for almost 12 weeks now, I would say its the best topical I have ever used. I have not had a breakout of any type for 6 weeks and my skin tone has evened out. It has also taken care of fine lines. I look younger, my skin looks great and I now wear minimal makeup if any at all -- that was the goal! I combat the occasional dryness by moisturizing about 30 minutes prior to using it in the evening.

Pros:

Keeps skin clear

Cons:

Dry irritated iching skin

Im not sure what to think of tazorac right now. I Finished a 6 month course of accutane and have been using tazorac at night for 6 months following my accutane treatment. I thought I was ready to stop cause my skin was fairly clear, but still oily. So I stopped for about 8 days, and my skin got horrible. So apparently tazorac has been keeping me clear, but I do not want my skin too become completely dependant on it, so not sure if it is good or bad for me. I am a health nut that believes in all natural stuff so I dont want my skin to become dependant on a drug (tazorac). So I will be talling my derm this info my next appt and see what she says.

Pros:

CLEARED UP MY ACNE
SKIN WAS HEALTHIER LOOKING

Cons:

SKIN FELT DRY AND A BIT BURNT

I have used tazorac on and off for about 2 years now. I tend to use it, notice great results with my acne and skin tone, then stop using it figuring that my acne has cleared up and my face looks good. A few months later, I usually notice that my skin is looking "dull" again and my face is breaking out, so I start using the tazaroc again, and the cycle continues. I started using taz again recently and think I will continue to use, as my skin does look alot better while using it

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
