Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Doesn't smell, works at first.

Cons:

Expensive, loses effectiveness, makes your skin red.

This stuff was GREAT when I first started using it. I had horrible cystic acne. This stuff, along with sulfacet-R dramatically reduced my acne. It really addressed the "cystic" part of my acne. That was several years ago. Now, 5 years later I think my acne problems have changed in nature. I don't have cystic acne anymore, but I still get pimples, tons of blackheads, and some whiteheads. This stuff doesn't do anything for them. Bottom line- If you're battling severe, cystic acne, this stuff will help. Just don't expect it to give you a porcelain complexion.

Pros:

so far it has cleared most of my acne , still have a few all over, but using TAZORAC it heals pimples fast and it simply improves ur skin

Cons:

redness, dry skin spots especially around the mouth, some peeling

ive been using this only for 1 month and it has really improved my skin although i still have some pimples all over. basically if you give it time and are patient with it it will improve ur skin, not immedietly but it will. also i used proactiv and it made my skin worst used it for a month nothing happened only made my skin worst and i had to pay a lot for it.

Pros:

clears up skin faster than other topicals i've used. good for inflammation/cysts

Cons:

minor peeling

i've used a ton of products, have suffered with acne for over 10 years (off and on)...this topical is my favorite by far. i also use it with doxicycline and i am very satisfied with the results. as soon as i'm feeling confident in my skin and stop taking as prescribed, i break out again so i recommend consistent use of the product. this a winner for me. still not where i want my skin to be, but it's improved dramatically since using this combination. GIVE IT TIME!!!

Pros:

Works to clear up clogged pores and pimples on cheeks, chin, forehead and nose

Cons:

Causes drying of the skin, in the beginning a burning sensation, shedding of the skin, sometimes a bit crusty

I'm 18 yrs old and I have cystic acne- it developed 4-5 months ago. In hs I didn't have this kind of acne but now I do. I've been using this product for 3 weeks along with plexion wash. The combination of these two is working. At first my face was very dry, irritated, a bit red, and uncomfortable but after the 2nd week my condition started to get better. My face is no longer as red, or as sensitive to the medicine. All the clogged pores are gone but the cysts that I have and the pimples are taking more time to heal-but they are getting better. Make sure to use the exact dosage-nothing more, nothing less. I am noticing that I have more hard bumps on my face rather than small clogged pores, whiteheads or blackheads all over my face which is fine by me. My doctor told me to be patient with this medicine and I am- I've tried many things before this like duac cream, differin, benz peroxide, retina A-they all worked for some time and then stopped working. Be patient acne takes time to rid of

Pros:

This usually cleared up my moderate facial acne within 3 weeks of using it nightly. Eventually, effectiveness wore off, but I was usually mostly clear.

Cons:

Tazorac always made my face peely, red and irritated when i first started on it. My skin would get used to it and would no longer peel. IT's a little costly too.

wasn't always effective for me but helped my acne sometimes. utimately not worth it's price as the results were irregular for me.

Pros:

In three months largely clear.

Cons:

Dry, burning, peeling, itchy skin when you first start. Does get a lot better once your sking gets used to it. Remember to use small amount.

Makes you break out at first and is highly irritating. If you go easy and use moisturiser then should be OK. Gets rid of pimples and prevents new ones from forming.

I'm 21 years old - a few months ago, I finally cleared up acne that started about 2 years ago now. But overall, I've been dealing with mild acne since puberty. My face has not been this clear since I was probably 10 years old, and it's all thanks to my dermatologist, who gave me samples of Tazorac and Klaron Lotion, along with oral antibiotic and Yasmin birth control about. I've stopped using both the antibiotic and Yasmin for 4 months now, and have not had a flare up, only an occasional blemish (and now, they only happen one or two at a time). I use the Klaron Lotion in the morning, followed by oil-free moisturizer, and at night, I just use the Tazorac. I finally know what it's like to have clear skin. I have been using both products consistently since I got them 8 months ago.

Works pretty well on my sensitive skin
I have extremely sensitive skin and can rarely use acne products with harsh chemicals such as these prescription ones. But, I mix Tazorac with my moisturizer (Renee Rouleau - the best) and use every other day. This has seemed to be helping my face stay clear but not too dry! I recommend this for people who can't tolerate most harsh chemical acne medications. Granted, during the winter I do get dry and have to use less than every other day. Happy with the effects this has on my skin.

Amazing at right strength!!
It depends on the strength. I had the o.o5%. My results were better skin. I just switched to 1% and I'm fearful of this purge talk. I woke up with pimple on my forhead that's never had pimples. Skin feels rough and dry. I wish I would've stuck with lower. Here's the deal. If you have combo or sensitive skin start low, don't think more is better. Now my mother can withstand tretinoin lower dose, me I was burnt. She has normal to dry skin. Don't be afraid to start low, I know it's expensive but sometimes more does more damage then good.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
