Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Worked very well, cleared up completley except for scars

Cons:

broke out a little more in the beginning
took a few weeks to notice a difference
stopped working after about a year, as of last night i started taking tazorac cream and monodox pills

Good product stick with it may get worse before it gets better and make sure you still mousterize because skin becomes very dry. I now use eucerin aquaphor it works amazzzzingly and wont cause u to be oily and breakout. When it does stop working, get something new ********* i prolly brokeout on my forehead because i got bangs, sooooo bottem line....dont get bangs if you suffer from acne. yeah i should have thought of that before

Pros:

my skin looks tighter (usually my pores are so open that it looks really bad)

Cons:

itchy, a little red, not so bad

i am not sure. i started a couple days ago. i am just sick and tired of my acne. i have tried everything. i mean everything. my skin is horrible, and i cannot bare it anymore. i hope this stuff works. i have reached the it gets worse before it gets better phase. my doctor put me on this at night, another cream in the morning and a pill 2 times a day for a month. he also told me to put on cetaphil cream, and so far, i have not had any drying. i just hoope this stuff works. i see people with perfect skin and it breaks my heart because i just want to be one of those people. i have had bad acne since the age of 13.

Pros:

Quick peeling off of skin, including newly formed and older pimples. Skin revealed underneath is super soft and touchable. Less irritating than BP and no bleaching action. I have ruined so many clothes from the bleaching effect of BP!

Cons:

Crazy drying and peeling. I need to use A LOT of oil free moisturizer with it, which makes me break out since my skin is so sensitive to moisturizing agents.

I'm going to keep using it along with 10% BP that I was able to find in stores until I can order some 2.5% BP and start the regimen. I Haven't decided if I will continue to use it once I get some 2.5%.

Pros:

It works, it just takes time!!!

Cons:

Peeling and making your skin oily!

Everyone is different! What works well for me may not work well for you! But Tazorac has really helped me greatly! I have 3 active pimples on my face right now and I have been using this medicince for over a month now... Before I had pimples popping up all over the place but now I have clear smooth skin and people are noticing a dramatic differnce!!

Pros:

Smoothed out my skin a great deal, got rid of most of my pimples.

Cons:

It seems to have done nothing for my blackheads, although I wasn't sure if I should have expected it to. It caused my mouth area to peel.

I had uber acne. It didn't look very bad on the surface, but it was resistant to pretty much every topical medication on the market. I had tried Differn, Duac, Proactiv, Evoclin, every single type of over the counter face wash... nothing worked. I went to a new dermatologist this year, and she prescribed me Tazorac. At first it just made me look like a pizza face and it made my mouth really peely and flaky. It burned so badly, sometimes I couldn't sleep until I eventually had to wash it off my face. It turns out I had been using a moisturizer with alcohol in it, and when I switched to a different one, that problem subsided. It worked very well on my acne, but I also have problems with blackheads on my chin and nose that haven't gone away.

Pros:

I'm not too sure there are any.

Cons:

Redness, Dry, Oily, Flaky...

I have used this product for 4 months now, and I see no improvement. It's a big let down, but my dermatologist insists it will work on me. I have an appointment soon if I hear nothing I like I won't continue this treatment.

Pros:

Doesnt make face dry or peel. Goes on smooth. Results are great!

Cons:

It took about 2 months to see results. The addition of Benzaclin made my face dry, burn and peel. TAkes a little getting used to.

I had underlying acne for about 2 years and finally went to see a derm. I was on taz and doxy for 8 weeks and saw very few results and my skin was painfully sore from the acne coming up to the surface. Went back to see derm and he gave me Benzaclin to put on in the morning and in 1 week I saw results. It dried out the surface of my skin while the taz pulled it up to the surface at night. So far its working great. The only problem I have is the scars but they seem to be fading away. I was beginning to lose hope until I got the benzaclin added to my regiment. Stick with it b/c with time it will work. It goes underneath to pull out all the junk so it takes time. The tube I have lasts forever too.

Pros:

I've been on Tazorac for about 16 weeks now. My skin is MUCH clearer. It also appears to have minimized scars/redness from earlier breakouts.

Cons:

The first 2-4 weeks my skin broke out a lot more. I've also had days where my skin has peeled off in sheets, sometimes to the point where it oozes like a blister [sorry for being so graphic].

Hang on for the first several weeks - it will get worse before it gets better. I know it's easy to get discouraged. When it comes to application, less really is more. I think my skin peeled so much initially because I was applying way too much. I use the Neutrogena Wave to buff away dry skin in the AM. Careful - If your skin is "peeling" and not just "flaky", stay away from abrasive soups.

Pros:

clears breakout faster than any other medication ive used. I became resistant to DUAC, whcih is a great topical medication. It got my skin cleared for 4 years. I swtiched to tazorac and it took my about a week for my skin to get use to it.

Cons:

Can cause your skin to become dry, and if you happen to get it on your lips, get it off right away because you'll wake up with rash and sore lips.

Wash your face with luke warm water. Wait for your face to dry and then put on non-comodogenic moisturizer. I use Cetaphil. Put the lotion on before putting onTazorac. This is crucial because tazorac itself will dry out your skin, further exasperating your acne problem, and believe me, you think dry skin is good, it isnt; you'll break out even more. Then apply tazorac, ONLY AFTER applying moisturizer that does not clog pores.

Pros:

I haven't seen any!!

Cons:

Omg my skin is worse than when I started it. My doctor said to stick with it but I feel like I'm back in junior high! How is it working if its making it worse!!

I'm not sure if this works or not. I haven't had my skin dry out yet or turn red or peel--so that is good. I've just had more break outs! I'm very embrassed because I want flawless skin!!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
