Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Clears up acne and prevents new ones from coming.

Cons:

Took about 2 months to work and dries up skin. Reccomend trying it out in the summer.

It works effectively if used properly.

Pros:

It can and does work, if used in moderation and with a good moisturizer like Cetaphil.

Cons:

When used daily, it caused extreme peeling and scabbing on my cheeks. Now I look awful and have to wait days to look normal again. It made my face worse...BUT...I was using it way too often, we just didn't know it yet.

My skin condition was that of occasional pimples but a lot of closed whiteheads...looks like I had a skin rash on my cheeks. They were never red, but my skin always looked bumpy. The Tazorac works..most definitely...because all of my whiteheads were coming out and becoming exposed. BUT..I was using it daily, as recommended by my doctor. So, I think if I would have known how sensitive I was to this product, she would have started me off more slowly. If I had started using it once every other day, I think I wouldn't look like a sunburned monster! Bottom line...it works...I would just seriously use this cream every other day with a good moisturizer. It causes dryness, but thats what we need...just not a LOT of it at once! Stick with this cream...it really is worth it. I know when the reddness goes away, my skin will be clear.

Pros:

I have an amazing skin now. Before I had a lot of blackheads and acne. The primary reason was having large pores. now, my skin is soft and free of any acne.

Cons:

I have to use it every night otherwise it doesn`t work for me; acne comes back again. Also, i need to use it only a pea size.

unlike so many people, I have read about this medicine on Oprah site. One of the dermatologists in california said that she had been using it for almost 10 years and mentioned it was one of the best decisions she had ever made for her skin. So, I started using it almost a year ago. Always use moisturizer and sun block ( I use clnique) and good ph balanced cleanser like cetaphil or for me even a better one spectro by GlaxoSmithKline.

Pros:

clears acne and reduce marks.

Cons:

Takes a WHiLE to kick into affect, peeling, drys skin out, causes more whiteheads.

This is my 2nd time using this product. It worked before so im hoping it works again. I'm 19 & tired of breaking out and wearing makeup so thick just to try & cover up my face. I want to go makeup free. Its been 1 week since i've been on this product & my face looks amazing, not completely spotless, but very improved. I used this along with cetaphil face wash & face cream. I also exfoliate twice a week & use an egg yolk & egg white mask on every other night. So far i'm happy with the results. I do break out but i try not to pick at it & it goes away in no time, WITHOUT scarring. So far i'm very happy & i can't wait to reach my 8 weeks mark date, so i can see the incrediable difference. Give it a try, especially if ur insurance covers it. You have nothing to lose but acne!

Pros:

Tazorac has worked better then any other topical treatment I have tried. It evened my skin tone and cleared up most of my acne.

Cons:

It caused redness, peeling, itching and burning.

Tazorac is great if you want to use a topical treatment to treat your acne, however Tazorac does not cure acne. You will have to use this product everyday if you want to keep the results. You can not skip treatments or you will not see the benefits. The biggest benefit I have received by using Tazorac is even skin tone. As an African American woman I have had lots of issues with scarring and uneven skin tone. Tazorac has done wonders for my skin tone (minus the red cheeks). The biggest problem I have experienced with Tazorac is the side effect that causes my face to peel weekly. I use a facial mask to peel off the dead skin, which really helps. I don't really expereince itching unless I have not applied it for several days. My cheeks almost always look red because of the medication. I can't say it will work for you because everyone is different, but I think it's worth a try. I purchase a tube that lasts me a year for about $85 w/insurance so I guess that equals out to $7 a month.

Pros:

Smooths out small bumps all over the face and makes skin a better texture

Cons:

it seems to get worse before it gets better

I have been on accutane twice and my acne has stayed the same. maybe it is because accutane is usually prescribed to severe acne patients and i never had huge bumps...but i always had small bumps all over my face and to me it was a constant struggle and nightmere. i just started using tazorac for a week or so and my skin is already becoming smoother all over although it is breaking out still. im gonna stick it out and see what happens.

Pros:

Cons:

making my skin worse and very dry.

I just started using this cream and I have been getting very depressed because my acne keeps getting worse. I have been on it for aprox 3 weeks now and dont even want to go out because I hate the way I look. I don't know if I should stick with it or if it's making things worse and I should get off of it! HELP!!:(

Pros:

I've used this product for a few months now, and it works great. It took me some time to get used to it because it does dry out your skin but my doctor recommended using it at night and that helped me deal with side Effects.

Cons:

The first month was horrible. My face got red and it stared to produce more acne and white heads then before. Sometimes i would wake up with even oiler skin. It also caused my skin to peel and showed little sign of improving my acne problem.

I think if you stick with it in the long run it does seem to improve. It also depends on your skin , you may need to increase the amount on the area to get a better result. I find that using some kind of cream on your face helps to control the dryness and also keeps your skin soft and shield it from the sun. Its not so great for a quick fix but if your looking for something that will clean up your acne and makes sure it stays that way then this product is the way to go.

Pros:

None that I can discern (in my case, anyway)

Cons:

Itching, flaking, incredible dryness, redness, swelling, increased acne, increased sensitivity to UV rays, expensive

Tazorac was a complete nightmare for me. My derm instructed me to use 0.5% topical every night and I did - for months and months, 6 in total. My acne never improved and toward the end of my use only got worse (which is what prompted me to quit using it). Throughout this period my skin was so dry as to be almost more embarassing than my acne, red as if I had rosacea and itchy! Used a Cetaphil wash every night and morning as well as Cetaphil moisturizer w. 15 sunscreen in it. Moisturizer did almost nothing to help. Normally I have dry to normal skin, nothing a simple moisturizer can't fix. After Tazorac, I have oily red skin that is uneven in tone and texture. Sigh.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
