Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Leaves skin babysoft
A little goes a long way.,
It really works.

Cons:

Hard to find.
A bit pricey.
Might be too intense for sensitive skin.

This is, hands down, the best scrub on the market for oily and acne prone skin. I am surprised more people have not heard of it as most reviews I find are from people who have been using it since the 1970s (some customer loyalty there!) I myself only stumbled across it and thought I would give it a try after reading reviews on Amazon. I have been using it for a month now and I am totally sold on this scrub. It is very, very granular, so I would not recommend using it on active, open acne sores or pustules. But if you have closed ones, blackheads, whiteheads, acne that is about to surface, then using this as recommended on the packaging works wonders. I used to have a ton of white and blackheads...no more. Some people don't like the smell, but I find it to be perfectly ok. Maybe somethings wrong with my nose! It IS hard to find AND expensive but Amazon has it and one tube can last a long time, as you only need a pea-sized amount for every use. Also, I think that sensitive skin might freak out with this. Mine is very oily and handles it just fine. I use once a day in the morning and definitely moisturize after. Seriously, I hope that this stays around forever because I never thought I'd find something this great...and I had tried just about everything. With this product, I've been reminded that sexier packaging and slick advertising mean very little to your skin in the end. It's just about the thing WORKING. (Sulfur and salicylic acid are the active ingredients)

Pros:

-It works
-100% all natural

Cons:

NONE.
Okay it's a little bit pricey, but clear skin is priceless to me,

It works and all that matters. I could care less about it being all natural, but that's always a plus knowing that your not putting all those harsh chemicals on your face. This is the first acne product that I can say that I like and works. I of course still have red marks and the odd blemish or two, but bottom line this is the clearest skin I've had in awhile. This is by no means a cure for acne, but I'm positive that with eating right and this topical, your acne will be no more.

Product used: KAVI (Coral KAVI)

Pros:

-Improved skin condition
-Lasts a long time
-Rinses off well - No residue
-Very good product support

Cons:

-Purchase online only

I bought this soap for my son after reading the reviews on this website. He responded well when he used the Proactiv Refining Mask as a spot treatment so I thought a sulfur based soap may work as well. The soap also contains Salicylic Acid which his dermatologist recommended he use in a cleanser. The results were very good. Within a couple of weeks, there was a visible improvement. He is now using several Kavi products and is now 98% clear and very happy. His friends have noticed the difference and has asked him what he is doing. His regimine using the Kavi Coral Soap, Toner and Moisturizer. He also uses their SA 15% Peel once a week. He is still taking the antibiotic the derm prescribed but has been able to cut back on those. He also uses BP in the AM and Ziana in the PM but I think the Kavi products have made the biggest difference. Everyone is different but I would consider putting this on your list of things to try.

Pros:

Works to reduce redness and inflammation.

Cons:

Dry the skin a bit, as all acne products. I use exposed moisturizer after it.

It cleared up my body acne. I am oily in my chest, back, back and ears. But I don't have acne there since I started using this soap with a scrub, two times a day. I don't let it for 10, just like 2 min is enough for my body areas. I started using it for my face 1 day ago. I will see what happens. I am letting it 10, and using moisturizer after it.

Pros:

Clears up acne

Cons:

Trial size, therefore can run out fast.

I have moderate acne and acne scars that didn't seem to go away with any product. This uses sulfur which dries up the pimples rather than going in the pore and making acne worse. Works for me, hope it does for you too!

Product used: KAVI (Coral KAVI)

Pros:

No extra steps, fast, easy, works by itself.

Cons:

None

I'm an oiler who's been using absorbent sheets twice per day (up to four times in the summer) to keep things under some semblance of normal. Now I wash with Coral three times (morning, afternoon, night) and one week in, it really feels like I'm not even producing as much oil as I used to. This is possible, according to the KAVI forum, because the pH or ingredients of other soaps can actually stimulate more oil production. I can verify that to be the case for me.

Pros:

Makes skin feel smooth.
Helps reduce the sight of acne

The refining mask really helps my face clear up. :) When I put it on, the day after I notice my pimples have shrunk! But it all depends on your skin type. If you have very sensitive skin then you shouldn't get anything from proactiv, it willor will not be too strong on your skin. So just be aware. Anyways, I love the refining mask and will order again!

Pros:

Kills acne, even my moderate to severe stuff.

Cons:

Smells sort of bad.
Drying.
Can cause some initial peeling.

So, I used this stuff for several months a couple years ago. Saw it at my local health food store and tossed it into the cart, figuring I had little to lose. This little sulfur bar amazed me, killing my acne within a week (there were still marks, of course, but all of the inflamed stuff began to die down). It eventually cleared all of my face acne and even halved my severe body acne by over half, maybe even 70 percent. BUT. My SO at the time called it 'fart soap', that's what it smelled like to him. No matter how much I rinsed, or no matter what soap I used after using this one, he could still smell the sulfur. So the thought that other people might smell it too made me quit.. didn't want to smell like I had chronic gas. Switched to a prescription sulfacetamide lotion (no sulfur smell), which worked wonders. But now that that lotion is no longer working, I'm seeking another solution (yet again... I'm nearing 30 and still have this crap). Might give the sulfur soap a whirl again. Maybe I can find something to really cut the smell (following w/ lemon juice? Baking soda? both?) Any tips appreciated.

Screw what your SO said! Use what you know works! He sounds very immature! He probably noticed your confidence and didn't like it, so he had to make a comment. You're lucky changing your routine didn't have a bad adverse effect! I used this soap for my face, the smell rinses off after lathering...

Product used: KAVI (Coral KAVI)

Pros:

Been working consistently for 5 years running.

Cons:

None, except if the bar is left to dry out in the shower, the little sulfur crystals begin to stick out a little, making the bar a little rough for the next use.

My regimen is full-body shower daily with Coral KAVI, wash my face at night with DermaWash, and take one steam bath at the gym every week. This regimen has improved my skin from the worst cystic acne anyone could have to about 3 new pimples a month. I don't know how many I used to have.. they basically covered my jawline, chest, and back. Greatest product in the history of skin care.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
