Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Great at getting rid of blemishes.

Cons:

Price but if you only use it as a spot treatment it will last you forever.

I do not use this product as mask. Instead, I use it as a spot treatment for pimples. For that it is great! The blemishes dry out and disappear a lot quicker. Because I use it as a spot treatment, the smell is not overwhelming at all.

Pros:

it really helps reduce redness; and overall aperence of blemishes

Cons:

alot of people complained about the smell; i didn't seem to notice it that much. The consistancy is pretty thick but overall my favorite proactive product and maybe even my favorite acne product ever.

It works and is worth the price indeffinetly.

Pros:

The only of the Proactiv products which I found to have worked well - not overly drying like those containing benzol peroxide. Having sensitive skin, this product did not irritate and actually did improve the look and feel of my face (mild acne).

Cons:

Price. Like most Proactiv products, this too is overpriced I feel. As well, the Proactiv ordering system is terrible.

First off, let me tell you that I have tried a wide variety of medication and treatments for my acne. With a very sensitive face, I have not had much luck with the Proactiv 3 Step -- I found it to be overly drying, giving my face a burnt look. However, this product does work well with me. I have found it to dramatically improve the look of my face like none other. I do not plan on continuing with the use of the three step -- esp. those products which include benzol peroxide as my face had trouble with it. However, this product (other than price) is one in which I have been very pleased with.

Pros:

cleanser didn't dry out my skin, worked very quickly, worked consistantly for almost a year

Cons:

breakouts come back if don't use the products as directed for even a day or two

i never had any of the problems described here. it didn't make my skin worse at all, it just got better and stayed better. i bought the kit first but now i just use the cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and the occasional spot treatment. i love it, and its the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Pros:

It dramatically reduces redness caused by acne and other topical products.

Cons:

Price.

You can buy it in local malls, at booths. You can either buy it with the three step solution, or in a huge bottle alone. It is cheaper than orderng it over the hone or internet. It works, but you'll only know if you try it.

Pros:

Really Works!!

Cons:

Nothing

I have tried Proactive and Serious Skin Care. I bought this product as a last resort and I am glad that I did. I agree with some of the reviews that it is expensive but there's a price to pay if you want clear skin. I have been using this product for 8 weeks. Yes, the product did make my skin worse as stated in the brochure but a few weeks later my skin was actually clearer. I don't feel the nasty bumps under my skin anymore. It feels smooth and healthy. I am 38 years old and have been battling acne ever since I turned 25. I never had a zit until I hit my mid-twenties. I am so grateful for this product. I don't care how much is costs ... it works and I will continue to use it.

Pros:

Cons:

hard to find

i have SUFFERED with acne for 10 yrs and ive spent THOUSANDS of dollars over the years on every product, peel, and procedure you can name that is supposed to clear acne and nothing has worked long term. ive only been using this soap for a few weeks but i have seen major results so far. i dont break out nearly as much and when i do they are super small and they go away in a flash. im optimistic and i really believe that this soap is going to be the answer to my prayers. nothing else has worked for me this fast- i started seeing results after just a couple of days!!

Pros:

Product really works. I use it more for an overnight spot treatment than as an all-over face mask. It really helps reduce swelling and redness of my cystic acne when used this way.

Cons:

It's not really that expensive, but it sucks that you have to order it. I guess that's why I use it more as a spot treatment as compared to using it all over my face. Oh, and it stinks!

It's a great product. I use it everytime I get cystic bumps, and I do see results as soon as the next day as far as size and swelling. It does take a few nights of use to get rid of the acne though.

This is a awome product to get rid off the occasional zit and it would of been perfect if only that after using it for a long time i became immune to it an it no longer was as effective as the first time i tried it. prolly in my opinion its the strongest product sold in over the counter stores an most effective so far, i recommend it!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
