“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

AMAZING PRODUCT. Spiro changed my life and skin but it does effect the voice.

Cons:

I am a professional singer/soprano and noticed it has made my voice raspier and more hoarse. I do love this product and don't quite know what to do because it really cleared up my skin. :(

If your line of work does not involve singing and/or acting, speaking, instructing, then by all means take this product. It works wonders!

Pros:

Almost clear skin, reduced body hair, weight loss of about 5lbs.

Cons:

Muscles pains, low blood pressure, initial tiredness and weakness, initial nausea and loss of appetite.

Not being nasty but I wish people would give products a chance to work before writing a review! It gives an inaccurate rating out of 5 otherwise. I'm using 75mg per day in addition to Dianette and have been on it for 7 to 8 months. I noticed an improvement within the first few weeks and I did not have an initial breakout. My chest and back are completely clear, and my face is almost clear and now looks flawless if i wear foundation. I think if I increased to 100mg per day, which is what I was prescribed, my skin would be completely clear, as it has made a vast improvement. But I'm not going to increase, as my blood pressure has gone down to 98/55. I've had a couple of side effects, as listed, but nothing that has made me want to come off it.

Pros:

small. tastes like mint. low dosage. minimal side effects. clear skin after 7 months with minimal break-outage in between (and that is usually related to your period coming)

Cons:

fatigue. depression. (although I'm not certain if it's just me or the spiro talking). definitely tiredness right after taking it.

Opted out of birth control as an option. Derm said that this blocked the androgens (testosterone) that causes hormonal acne. Started taking it August 08. Completely cleared my skin by Feb 09. I have one pimple on my chin that is healing and that is because I forgot to take 3 pills the week before my period. I take 3 pills the week before and one pill thereafter for the rest of the month. Keep a consistent face wash routine going with gentle cleansers and stay free of makeup. I've had to learn the hard way - don't pick your face! At the site of a pimple I apply a dab of Duac with a q-tip and let it go! It's better for you and the pimple. But now that I have been on Spiro, my whole face is clear. Soon I will be looking into ways to fade some of the scars. Best of luck to you. Patience is key. Patience will win in the end.

Pros:

Cystic monthly acne has stopped

Cons:

dry hair, thirsty.. Very tired, achy - monthly cycles are now 17 days from start to start... Not fun..

I love that the cystic acne is gone - I have had break outs but limited.. I seem to scar with each new pimple/cyst so anything that makes them fewer has my vote.. I am worried about my hair though - have heard horror stories of thinning hair and hair loss.. definitely don't want that! Make sure to do your blood test to check potassium levels - if your doc doesn't suggest it get a new doc. I will try for a little longer - I have been on sprio for 3.5 months now..

Pros:

Glowing, healthy, clear skin when taken with oral contraceptives.

Cons:

None for me.

My acne went away completely when I started taking Spironolactone 4-5 years ago. I take it with oral contraceptives since I have PCOS, and I find the combination works the best: one without the other doesn't work as well. I do find that the spironolactone gives my skin a healthy, glowing look which goes away if I miss some pills. People actually comment that I have skin like a peach, which I never, ever thought I'd hear. I've never noticed any side effects. I take 50 mg 2x a day. I tried Accutane several times along with several kinds of antibiotics and topical treatments before; this is the only thing that has worked for me.

Pros:

This does not work right away!! I have lost weight as well.

Cons:

do use the restroom frequently

I have been using spironlactone for over a month and not have seen any improvement in my skin. I read other reviews and they said it can take 2-4 months before you can see a difference in your skin. I am not sure if it gets worse before it gets better, but my skin is breaking out bad now, like back when I was a teenager. I think I just need to give it a little more time. Just wanted to give others a heads up...that this does not work right away.

Pros:

gives you beautiful, soft skin

Cons:

nothing

It took 4 months to start working and did not completely eradicate acne until 5-6 mos. I had a horrible breakout when I went on it (the worst my face ever looked) and it kept breaking out for about 2-3 mos and then finally started clearing up. You need to be patient because IT DOES WORK. I have been on it a year now and have no intention to ever go off of it. I am 36 yrs old and I wish I knew about this years ago. It also will change the texture of your skin - my skin is extremely soft now

Pros:

No uncomfortable side effects, easy to take

Cons:

Didn't do that much for my skin..screws w/ your hormones

I used it for my moderate acne...maybe worked at first but I really didn't notice a huge difference. I still had mild to moderate acne every so often. also..SCARY to mess with your hormones like this...I was on it for a year (from age 19-20) and I NEVER got my period. Not even once! Strange because it just blocks your testosterone (and is even used to regulate periods), but as soon as I went off the meds, my period started up again right away as per usual. I just don't think it's worth it. Benzyl Peroxide works much better.

Pros:

My skin is now a good balance between dry and oily. Not too oily, yet not too dry. I have noticed that my hair doesn't get as greasy either (what a blessing)! For the most part, my skin is now fairly clear.

Cons:

frequent urination, very low blood pressure

I am 21 and have been taking this for about five months. I didn't see real improvements until about 3-4 months. So be patient!!! I'm only on 50mg twice a day, and maybe if the dosage was increased I'd see an even bigger improvement, but this medicine has decreased my blood pressure significantly, so I'm a little apprehensive on upping the dosage quite yet. I do believe I have seen an improvement on the overall feel and look of my skin though.

Pros:

My skin and hair is less oily. Fewer Breakouts. My boobs grew a cup size.

Cons:

Leaves me funny tasting: My boyfriend says he tastes it from me and I have some drug taste in my mouth. Eye doctor prescribed me taking eyedrops for dry eye since I've begun Spiro therapy.

Sure, I have some sort of taste perversion, I'm drying out, I'm thirsty all the time, and my sex drive has gone to the toilet. I don't care because my skin is finally clearing up and my boobs are getting bigger!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
