“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

None so far, but it is early to tell.

Cons:

breast tenderness, dizziness, increased trips to the bathroom.

I started this medicine 1 month ago and my acne has gotten worse but it is hopeful to read that it takes some time for it to be effective. I have tried everything but accutane which will be my last option due to the serious side effects. My acne is hormonal, I am very hopeful this will be the final solution for my acne issues!

Pros:

Eliminated my hormonal cysts, less oil production, smaller looking pores

Cons:

Frequent urination, irregular menstrual cycles, first couple of months migraines

This is a great med for clearing up hormonal cysts. It takes 2-3 months to get results, but is worth it. I hardly ever get cysts anymore (2-3 per year). I've been on this about a year and want to try to get pregnant so I'm going to stop taking this. I'm a little nervous about stopping it and may taper down. Right now I take 50 mg, twice a day. Since I had migraines intially (hormone changes, I'm guessing), I am anticipating something similar when I stop. If you aren't planning to have kids soon, this is wonderful and much less harmful than accutane (so i've heard).

Pros:

Cleared up Cystic Acne that I had battled for 12 years

Cons:

Was very tired the first three months(sometimes just had to take afternoon naps) . I seem to have adjusted and energy level is returning. Breasts are definitely bigger. Cannot take on an empty stomach.

Did not have bad acne as a teen, I started around age 40 and got progressively worst. It was so painful. I can't tell you how much I like this product. Dosage was raised to 125mg a day. This means you have to take tat least wo pills since it doesn't come in this dosage.

Pros:

I started taking spiro in Jan, but unfortunately stopped in Mar because I wasn't sure if it was working. Ironically, looking at pictures now I realized my break-out were mainly on the surface and all the under the skin stuff was really clearing up!

Cons:

I've noticed some muscle aches due to dehydration, so I've started drinking more water. I also know it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I've had acne since I was 12 but it's gotten far worse since college, nothing over-the-counter was working, and I realized it wasn't just going to go away. According to blood work, my doctor discovered that my DHEA (hormone) levels were twice that of an average female. Basically my hormone levels were all out of balance and that's what was causing my acne... and probably also my excess hair growth (thankfully I'm blonde), my muscular build, and small chest size. I'm hoping I can stick with it this time, because I know I will see results eventually. I'm also trying to decide if I should combine this medication with the pill, has anyone seen a more positive outcome by combining the two?

Pros:

fast acting, easy to use

Cons:

weird after taste if i let it sit in my mouth too long before swollowing them

I have had severe cyctic acne and it would be so painful to even touch my face at times. i was actually told by my co-worker that i really needed to see a dermatologist about it a few months ago, which is quite embarrasing knowing that it was being noticed. Since i have been precribed this, and using it regularly, i have never been happier with my skin. i go out without make now, and love to touch my skin! this is truly unbelievable.

Pros:

It works and, for me, it worked pretty fast

Cons:

You have to pee a lot while taking it, and you can get dehydrated pretty easily - but not really that big of a deal if you drink plenty of water.

If you have acne, along with unwanted facial hair growth, this definitely helps clear up your face. It's almost unbelievable. I still get some pimples around my face and in certain areas, but compared to how my face usually would breakout, it doesn't even phase me. This is so effective if your acne is hormonally-charged. I'm really thankful for it!

Pros:

Since taking Spiro, I've noticed that my overall oil production has decreased and that my skin feels and looks smoother and brighter. My boobs have gotten a bit bigger and my hair isn't as oily as it was in the past.

Cons:

I felt tired and a bit achy the first few weeks on the medication. I see a lot of people complain about the headaches, which I also got, but realized that the headaches were a trigger for me drink more water - then my headaches went away.

My skin isn't 100% yet, but I have faith that it will get to where I can be happy with it. My older scars are a bit more noticable now that my skin is smoother and brighter, so I'm going to need to get some peels and dermobrasion done soon to minimize their appearance. I still breakout, but I get one or two instead of 15 or 20 each day now. I'll continue to take Spiro until my dermo finds something else that she'd like to try on me. I'm currently on 100mg a day and I've been taking the drug for 2 1/2 months. If you have hormonal acne or if you've tried everything else (Accutane, RetinA, Solodyn, Duac, Epiduo, Rosac, Minocycline, etc.), try this, it may be the drug that finally helps clear up your skin. I still have high hopes.

Pros:

idk think there were any??

Cons:

heart pounding, trouble breathing, couldn't sleep at night, and head aches that were horrible!

This medication may work for some people, but as for me it was awful and felt like it could have been life threatening if I didn't stop taking it. I first had horrible head aches so then I took it at night because I thought that would help with the head aches and then my heart started pounding just to get up and walk around the house. I had trouble breathing and if I got up to quick I would get a bit dizzy or light headed. Just thought I would let you all know some possible side affects before taking this medication.

Pros:

Cheap as chips, minimal side effects (once used to it) minty flavour!

Cons:

makes you a bit dizzy at first or when you up your dose.
Seemed to make things a little worse in the beginning.

Well i still need more time on this, but after 3 months on 25mg, 50mg, then 75mg, (1 month each) things have been better with regards to oil production. I can wash my hair every two days instead of every day and my face is not slick with oil like it used to be. my skin goes through cycles. Sometimes it is flawless then i get another breakout which can take a while to heal. I am taking 100mg a day now and hope this may just fine tune it. I have had great results on diane35 but can no longer take it due to migraines so this was my 'other option'. we'll see how it goes from now on!

Pros:

skin has completely cleared up, worked fast, affordable

Cons:

no side effects!

I had really bad hormonal acne when I went off birth control last year, spironolactone cleared my face up quickly and now I have no more acne. I am on 100mg as 50 mg didn't quite do the trick. It truly feels like a "magic pill", so glad my doctor introduced me to it!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
