“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Breakouts on my chin and cysts along jawline have cleared up 99%. Skin is much less oily. I now only get one or two breakouts a month, it used to be almost every day I'd have a new one and several a day during my period.

Cons:

I get dizzy if I stand up too quicky. Wake up thirsty in the middle of the night sometimes. Breast tenderness the first month or so. It also seems that menstrual cramps have gotten a little bit worse, but nothing that Pamprin can't fix.

Read about spiro on the internet and asked my derm if he would prescribe it. He had no problem doing so, along with Duac for the non-hormonal breakouts. He prescribed 100 mg a day (in the a.m.), but recently I've switched it to 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night so I don't get so dizzy from lower blood pressure. I also notice that I'm a little bit dizzier after I run. I've been on spiro for 7 weeks now and I can see a HUGE improvement.

Pros:

I had cystic acne - got worse in my forties- can you believe it? Nothing worked then I tried Spiro - I have had clear skin now for 3 months. My doctor said it tends to work better for women in my age group.

Cons:

None

As your estrogen drops, the male hormones takes over as they are more aggressive. Spriro fights this and blocks the male hormomes - finally a way to fight the source - acne comes from the inside, topical stuff does not fight severed acne. So try this, all you ladies out there !!!

Pros:

Complete disappearance of acne, reduced pores, reduced visibility of red nostril veins, DRAMATIC reduction in facial hair (both size/darkness and number), hair all over body grows back much more slowly, moderate weight loss

Cons:

I already have low blood pressure without Spiro so its bp-lowering effects cause me occasional very brief periods of intense dizziness upon standing

I have been on Spiro + hormonal birth control for almost six years to manage polycystic ovarian syndrome and its works beautifully. My endocrinologist has had me on one 100mg pill per day for the entire duration of the treatment and I am satisfied with the results. I saw an improvement in my acne right away and after two months, the full effect had taken place. My woman-stache was barely visible, the chin hairs went away without any harsh creams, etc. The only thing I didn't like was the month my body took to get used to the hormone change - I cried a lot at nothing at all and would get very dizzy when I stood up. After that, everything's been great. I get a lot of compliments on how nice my skin looks but I don't have to wear any makeup.

Pros:

smoother skin, reduced acne, not having to wash hair as much = more self confidence

Cons:

outbreaks in first couple of weeks, feeling fait, dizzy...

If your acne is because of haywire hormones then this is the pill for you! absolutely amazing!!! breakouts in the first couple of weeks but do try and stick it out and you wont regret it. im on my fourth week taking 100mg per day and i feel like a new woman. im no longer waking up to new spots but instead watching them vanish day by day. I know how it feels when you feel like you are stuck under a black cloud that just wont quit, however spiro will bring the light back into your life..well it has for me. good luck everyone.... xxxxxxx

Pros:

Clear skin finally after trying Proactive, Murad, antibiotics - you name it.

Cons:

a little tired/ dehydrated

Try it! If you have hormonal acne; if you are a woman who has heavy or irregular periods and has had acne for awhile. You may be like me and have PCOS and this stuff works wonders for the acne. I feel like I have different skin. I swear people don't want you to know about this because they want to keep making money off you trying to find a cure for your acne, when this medicine is cheap and works very well.

Pros:

Less oily skin; virtually no cystic acne

Cons:

Irregular period

I had horrible cystic acne on my cheeks and jawline before EVERY period. Horrible, deep pimples that took so long to clear up that I felt like I was always dealing with them. I started on spiro and w/n the first month, my face improved dramatically. It has been maybe 5 months now and I think I've had one small cystic pimple...AND it cleared up right away! I also use Avage and/or Tazorac at night. I get compliments all the time on my skin! I don't think that has ever happened. Try spiro. It's amazing. Oh, I take 50 mg/day and then up to 75 mg/day the week prior to my period.

Pros:

IT ACTUALLY WORKS!! Its the most effective consistant treatment I have tried. AMAZING FOR CYSTIC ACNE!!!!

Cons:

I had clear skin thru H.S. and collage then BAM! like a bat out of hell, my face just went crazy! The only option I had left was accutane but I didnt want to go that harsh. I finally had a new dermatologist tell me about this and after about a month my face looks amazing!!! I still have a little scaring but other then that no new break outs!!! its amazing! Ill get a tiny break out around my period that last literally a day. I take 50mg 2x a day and I swear its a miricle. try it its awesome!!! No side effects other then having to pee. Just make sure you drink a lot of water!!!! I LOVE THIS DRUG!!!!!!!!!

Pros:

No more breakouts and less oil production.

Cons:

None.

I've had acne since the beginning of high school. I am now 28 and within the past year or so, the breakouts have been so much worse. Nothing seemed to help until my doctor prescribed spiro a month ago. The first week of taking spiro, I had the normal amount of breakouts. Since then, I have had no new pimples (it has been a month). Also, I no longer need to blot my face of oil during the day (previously, I'd have to blot every half hour!). This is a miracle drug!! I take 100 mg per day (I no longer use any other acne meds). During the first week or two I was more tired, but that is no longer a problem. That has been the only side effect I have experienced. I wish I would have learned of this drug sooner - but hey, it feels amazing now not to wake up to a new pimple or four every morning. I am so grateful of spiro - having acne is so painful both emotionally and physically. I wish everyone out there suffering from acne the best - I hope spiro works for you!

Pros:

Cleared up skin as well as Accutane within 3 months

Cons:

No side effects as of yet. Only taking 100 mg daily.

I highly recommend this product for acne. I have tried many other products over the past few years that haven't worked. This has worked as well for me as Accutane, but without the side effects. It also decreases the oil in your skin, which itself, helps the texture of your skin and pores. Make sure you are patient though. I didn't see results until after 2 and a half monhts of treatment.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
