“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Affordably, no side effects

Cons:

Much worse breakouts

Jenna, (and others) I have been on Spiro for almost 3 weeks, I am having the same problem. I have no fatigue, headaches, etc, but my skin has gotten WORSE, almost as bad as ever. Bad, painful cysts, and many along my jaw and chin. I feel desperate too. Maybe it is normal? But no one mentioned it. I will review again when I have been on this for longer.

Pros:

been on spiro for a week now one pill 100mg a day, along with the topical treatment ziana. so far so good.

Cons:

frequent urination

I started suffering from nodules under the skin as well as folliculitis, when I entered my thirties. My dermatologist first recommended retin-A, as well as having electrolysis to keep the hair from growing and minimize the folliculisis.

Pros:

It works! I have been using this for over 2 months and for the last month ahve had NO new breakouts - a record for me.

Cons:

Initially I got a little light-headed and tired but ti went away after the first week of starting or upping my dose. Skin is drier.

I hope this never stops working, it ahs been my saviour.

Pros:

no severe side effects, quite effective in conjunction with Tazorac

Cons:

some bleeding b/w periods, no irregular periods as of yet; no really expensive but a significant expense to add per month for ME

Great product and only a few things to watch: no pregnancy while on it and get K levels checked

Pros:

-to be determined

Cons:

-the awful minty taste
-breaking out more

Ive just started this medication 2 weeks ago, and since being on it, Ive actually started to break out more and get those "acne scar pock marks"!!! I am so stressed and upset over this and wanting to quit, but Im only into week 2. My derm. has asked me to be on it for 3 months until my next follow up with him. I know this will take time, but so far the initial result is making my skin worse than it was before. Ive always heard/read that when your on acne medication, your skin could potentially get worse in the first stage but gets better later on. I just have to be patient about it I guess. Has anyone had the same effects like I have? HELP!!!

Pros:

Few side effects. Feel more thirsty than usual, and decreased appetite resulting in weight loss, but no significant or bothersome side effects for me (compared to some other drugs like birth control).

Cons:

I don't think it's working...

I've passed the 2 month mark at taking 75 mg daily religiously. I can't really tell if it's working or not, but my doctor thinks it's having no effect on me and asked me if I wanted accutane at my last appointment. I said no for now, and so he upped me to 100 mg to see if that will do the trick (even though he was leaning toward taking me off of it completely). DID THIS MED KICK IN FOR ANYONE AFTER 2 MONTHS?? I'm really hoping that it will work because this med is very easy to be on.

Pros:

Not sure there are any yet?

Cons:

No results after 2.5 weeks. I have been dizzy and light headed since beginning.

A friend suggested I ask my Derm about it because she had great success. Thus far after 2.5 weeks I have seen nor felt any changes. I do go to the bathroom more and have been consistently dizzy. I was prescribed 100/day ( 2x/day 50 mg). I am now only taking 50mg at night because of the fatique and feeling dizzy. Hoping it takes more time or I adjust so there are no side effects.

Pros:

So far all is well after 3 weeks of use

Cons:

A little dizziness and dehydration for the first week but now the dizziness is gone and I rarely feel dehydrated anymore as long as I sip water throughout the day.

I am 32 and still suffer from hormonal acne. I hate to jinx things, but so far so good. No initial breakout and skin seems to be doing much better. I am coming up on my first period since being on this and have only gotten one pimple when I normally get 4 or 5. I think I have only gotten about 5 pimples total since being on it, if that.I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue working. I am only on 50mg right now and will possibly go up to 75 or 100 if needed after I have used it for a little longer.

Pros:

I've been using for one week...and have noticed a difference already.

Cons:

Urinate more frequently, and it seems that as soon as I eat...I have to ease toward the ladies room for a few minutes :( I also have experienced dizziness and I'm a little tired, but not exhausted...also a dry scalp and breast tenderness.

I am on 100mg a day and it seems to be working. I never had acne until now, and I am 25. Its all hormonal, that's what the Derm said....I tried ProActiv, and countless others for the past six months with no success. I have cyst like acne and it is very painful. Since I began taking this a little over a week ago, I have noticed VERY dry skin...but my moisturizer is taking care of it. If you take this med and it doesn't work, try Clyndimicin. It seems to work wonders for others that I know...I have also noticed my sun spots fading.. I am satisfied so far, but can't wait to see my skin actually clear up. I believe this will work and am willing to give it a fair chance.

Pros:

Gives me hope, diuretic, less oily skin

Cons:

Tired feeling, having to pee alot more, skin drier

I have been on ethis for about 2, maybe three months. I started on 25mg, upped to 50mg and am now today upping to 125mg. I still have hope that it works, On the lower dose I did not see any improvement. After reading all these posts I sensed the dosage was too low. I am not looking forward to how this will effect my energy level, but at this point I will try anything. I am 35 years old and started having an issue with acne at 25 with my first pregnancy. I've tried it all--crems, gels, accutane 1x, retin-A and every other imaginable OTC treatment. I keep telling myself I am too old to be dealing with this. I pray this will do the trick for me as it has for so many others suffering from hormonal acne. I'll post again in a month or two and let you know what the higher dosage does.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
