“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Stopped most of my breakouts

Cons:

Causes sensitivity to sunlight which can result to terrible sunburn, I had to take Solodyn with the Spironolactone to completely clear my acne, does not help with scarring or red marks

I've been on many acne medications over the years and the Spironolactone has definitely made a difference. I'm a 20 year old female that had been struggling with acne since age 12. This medication has also helped with my blackheads and has cleared up my skin.

Pros:

- Cleared up my acne in about 1.5 months
- no more greasy hair
- hardly any facial hair

Cons:

- AWFUL (and I mean awful) initial break out
- Lots of trips to the bathroom at first
- the scars from initial break out . . .

I decided to try this medication before I tried Sprinolactone and i'm glad that I did (in the end, anyways). Spiro is a lot easier to obtain and initially I was put on 25 mg, but then I upped the dose to 50 mg within the first week. I started Spiro on exactly Sept. 15 (and now it is Oct 5). By the second week I had never seen my skin look so bad. I was waking up with new pimples EVERY DAY! And not the small insignificant ones either, the ones that that are big (not like huge cysts though), horribly painful, remain for weeks and then leave behind dark pigment marks. Naturally, I was extremely upset by this. But after reading about others who had similar experiences, I decided to continue use and at least wait it out for just a few more weeks until I hit that "2 month mark". Well it has not been fully 2 months yet but i'm proud to say that my skin has not looked this good in a long time. I'm still oily on my face a little, but my hair... oh man my hair! That's what really makes me love this medication. My hair is no longer greasy. I used to have to scrub it TWICE with shampoo and never skip a day showering unless I wanted to look like a nasty little grease monkey. Yuck. Anyways, I definitely recommend this product before you try Accutane if you've been struggling with acne as long as I have (for seven long, long years) with minimal results. That is ff you can endure that horrible initial break-out and the scarring that is sure to follow (but they are fading away now), because that first stage is BRUTAL. :(

Pros:

Less oily skin

Cons:

my cystic acne came back :(

I went to my dermatologist because my skin was too oily and rosac was not doing anything to prevent that. I got on spiro (50mg per day) and not my chin acne is going crazy. I hadn't had a cystic pimple in a long long time. I don't know what to do. Will this go away if I keep on using it, or will they just keep on comming?

Pros:

weight loss, lower BP, happier

Cons:

abesoutly nothing

I have had horrible acne with cysts for 10 years now. As soon as I started taking this med. my face cleared up and had no oil. I for whatever reason feel happy now doc. does't know why, but I do. I just can't believe this... it's amazing.

Pros:

Weight loss, Skin seems like it's getting better slowly but surely, Pepperminty tasting pills

Cons:

Frequent urination, Makes me tired

I started using this a little over a month ago and now am up to 100 mgs a day. The pills taste like mints. I'm stilll dealing with acne problems but I have faith that this will work for me. I take these at the same time every day as directed. *Note try to take these before 6pm so you're not up all night running to bathroom.

Pros:

It smelled great (like peppermint) but I didn't notice any miracle effects like I read on here.

Cons:

It gave me headaches, I had to get blood drawn every few months (don't like needles!!), and it made me dizzy a lot.

I read so many wonderful reviews on here about how it clears up acne and facial hair, but it did nothing noticeable for me at all.

Pros:

clearer skin, less cysts (normally 8-12 each month)-this month only 2! Skin feels smoother, less facial hair growth

Cons:

Feel some weakness, heart palpitations. Swelling in lower arms, hands?

Started taking this "wonder" drug about two months ago. I've had acne since I was 10 years old. Have taken Accutane 3x but each time after taking the cysts, oil, etc. came back with a vengeance. First time IN MY LIFE (I'm 48) that I've had skin that's not loaded with breakouts. I do have a question, though for others that are taking this drug- my lower arms/wrists/hands have been swelling and are painful since I started taking this med. Today the skin is even painful to touch and it feels like my arms are going to 'bust.' Has anybody else had any symptoms of swelling, etc. like this?? I am currently taking 100mg daily.

Pros:

Its great. I've acne since a teenager. I can't say that I have tried different things for it. I do use professional products for my face and get facials often, but it seems like this medicine is the only thing that made my acne disappear.

Cons:

The only thing that i dont like is that i have to take the pill daily.

LOVED it!

Pros:

works well after 2 months...but only for a short time

Cons:

frequent urination
low energy
stopped working after a month

I have been taking Spiro. (50 mg) for a couple months now, along with Tri-Sprintec birth control. I didnt see a change until about the 2nd month. My cysts cleared up around my mouth after 2 months of treatment. But, the clear skin only lasted for about a month! I am wondering if I need to up my dose?

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
