“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Worked after the first month 100mg a day but the 2nd month broke out terribly. It seems to work but maybe this 2nd moth my hormones are adjusting but I am going to stick with it.

Cons:

2nd month bad breakout, irregular period and extremely dry mouth and lips.

I believe it is going to work and hopefully right now it is just the side effect of getting worse before it gets better. I am also on YAZ birth control. This will be my third month I will give an update at the end of the month.

Pros:

Has helped to clear up my acne and loss a few pounds!

Cons:

It smells and taste strange. I almost dread having to take it (just because of the taste and smell).

It is a usable product as long as you aren't trying to have sex frequently

Pros:

1) Completely cleared up tiny flesh colored bumps on forehead.
2) Small Pill

Cons:

1) Very dehydrating when I first began to use it

I'm 28 and I've been suffering from acne (hundreds of tiny flesh colored bumps, a few big bumps under the skin, extremely rare pustules) for the past couple of years on my cheeks, forehead, and jawline since stopping hormonal birth control. Now the tiny bumps are gone and my skin feels almost normal. My forehead is smooth with the occasional "regular" teenage type bump. My cheeks are beggining to clear up although I can still feel a few bumps under the skin. I do still have 6 or 7 small bumps around my jaw, but hopefully those will be gone soon too. Right now I'm more concerned with the red spots on my cheeks - I've had these before and know that they will fade with time - but the waiting sucks! Overall, I highly reccomend this product. I felt a little dizzy and a little dehydrated at first, but now I'm fine. I will continue to use this product for a couple more months and report back. I'd say that after 1 month my face looks about 50% better.

Pros:

softer skin but still waiting for acne to clear

Cons:

no to speak of

I started taking this medicine approximately 7 weeks ago. (200mg in am) Although my skin is severely breaking out since starting medicine, the overall quality of my skin has noticeably improved (skin is softer and blackheads have decreased somewhat). Like most people on this message board, I have struggled with acne for over ten years. I will report back once I start to see signs of improvement.

Pros:

It really works!! I've had every type of acne since age 11 (now 38). My skin was near flawless with occasional monthly breakouts until about 2 weeks ago when I had to stop it due to severe dehydration. My skin currently looks worse than ever.

Cons:

Was taking too high a dose(200mg per day)which resulted in too many trips to the bathroom incl. never sleeping through the night. Often felt fatigued & sluggish, but never (until reading other reviewers) made the connection.

I intend to go back on it as soon as I can get back in with my dermatologist. Will try a lower dose & hope for the best.

Pros:

Clear, bright complexion! No more bumps and marks!

Cons:

Takes a good two motnhs to see a big difference.

It took me about 2 months to see a big difference but my face has been clear since. I have been on spiro for almost 6 months and I have been really happy with the results. I was so worried about my skin back in April and May and now it's not something I think about. I can walk out with no makeup or sweat during a sport and not feel self conscious. It works!!! It was also combined with Tazarac cream which also helped my progress.

Pros:

I haven't had any yet

Cons:

I keep waking up to find my face full of new acne. It's really itchy and they hurt!

I am 20 yrs old andI have had acne since middle school. I have tried everything under the sun except for accutane. When I went to the dermatologist to talk about going on accutane, she said that I might want to try spiro first. She made it seem like this would be the miracle I have been waiting for. I have only been on spiro for nine days, but my skin is the worst I have ever seen it. I'm taking 50mg in the morning in conjunction with differin .3% gel at night. I'm very tempted to just give up? How long does it usually take to start working?

Pros:

Made my hair and skin a little less oily.

Cons:

Didn't work! I was on 150 mg to 200mg/day for 16 months and all it did was give me worse acne. I was breaking out in places I never breakout and had two periods a month for over a year.

Even at 200mg/day for six months I was still breaking out really bad, and because I was getting two periods a month for over a year it made me extremely tired. I also craved salt like a crazy woman and had to pee every two hours. I've finally stopped spiro three weeks ago and my skin is clearing up. I guess it works for some women, but not for all.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne completely

Cons:

at first, frequent urination, especially at night

I've suffered with acne for 24 out of my 36 years. This took away all the horribly embarrassing red cystic bumps. Tried antibiotics and all the topicals. Had not tried accutane. This has really been a lifesaver in terms of giving me back a life without cover up. It's nice to be able to go into work and not worry about people staring at your chin/cheek or wherever the acne decided to appear!

Pros:

Works!

Cons:

None

Hi Help-Please. Yes, my derm prescribed it for me. He said that my acne was hormonal, but that spironolactone was good for that. I don't have PCOS--just jacked up hormones :>). I've heard that some derms are reluctant to prescribe it, because prescribing it for acne is off-label. Don't know how long you've been going to your derm, but you may want to try to find one that will prescribe it. For the clear skin that I've gotten, I can take irregular cycles. Right now mine is about every two weeks, but it's nothing more that spotting. I'll take that any day over the acne I've suffered with.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
