Acne.org’s Real World Take
Not often used because it smells bad, colors the skin when applied, and can (rarely) lead to severe side effects. Limited evidence shows that it does significantly clear mild-to-moderate acne, but we need more research to know for sure how well it works.

It smells like old people.

Pros:

I have moderate acne rosacea and was prescribed Clenia wash as part of a daily regimen. It has worked wonderfully. I couldn't be happier.

Cons:

The smell can be a little bothersome, but it is not enough to hinder me from using the product. It's a small price to pay for clear skin.

I am more than pleased with the results I've seen since using Clenia wash to control acne rosacea. I would recommend it for anyone plagued by this horrible skin condition.

Pros:

It works. Doesn't make skin greasy.

Cons:

If you do not have health insurance, this tube will cost about $260 retail. It's obscene what Upsher Smith charges for this product.

Get the generic. It works just as well. You put it on, leave it for 10 minutes, and clean it off with water. It works just as well, if not better, in my humble opinion.

Pros:

clears up most all types of acne.
sulfur is not as harsh as benzoly peroxide.

Cons:

It dosent smell so good.
some alot of people are allergic to sulfur.
without coverage it could get expensive.

I have tried a sample of clenia that i got from a doctor. I really liked it.I have been suffering from really bad acne and I hope to soon get a larger bottle. My friend also uses clenia and has been for almost a year. he had really bad acne and his skin looks great. you would never know that he suffered from acne.he now would reccomend nothing else for acne but clenia. The only time he ever has a problem is when he is lazy and forgets to wash his face. Then his skin really starts to break back out.

Pros:

i think this wash is really helping my skin! and it's not too harsh or over-drying.

Cons:

the smell is not great. and, if you don't have health insurance, it would be expensive

i've been using this in conjunction with retin-a for a week and my skin already looks dramatically better. i'm hoping the clenia will be able to minimize the initial breakouts from retin-a.

This stuff was working very well, i liked the way it made skin feel and i liked that it did not have to be left on, but i began to develop small bumps on my face, but i kept going because i had no new pimples, but the bumps got redder and were everywhere. I finally had to stop Plexion, and now i have to try something else. Im trying b5 supplements also, hopefully i wont have to treat my face with a lot of topical treatments, and will be able to rely on the b5 and good cleaning habits

Pros:

very soapy, seems to cleanse well

Cons:

drys out skin
smells strongly of sulphur
expensive

I don't really think this product does anything except to cleanse the skin. It is pretty good at removing makeup and preparing the skin for medication, but be careful, if you scrub too hard you will produce major drying!! It never did anything for my acne. I have mild acne and it was simply used to prepare my skin for Differin (also never worked that well and I seemed to grow immune after a little while). Smells horrible! You end up smelling sulfur all day and night once you wash with it. It costs a lot, even with insurance. I think over the counter cleansers are just as good so long as they don't contain any ingredients that are known to be irriating and cause acne (I have researched this long and hard and there are A LOT even if a product claims to be "Oil-Free" or "Non-Comedogenic." Not worth the price to simply cleanse/remove makeup and drying overall. Would not purchase again

Pros:

well it reduces the size of whiteheads after they're formed.. and it doesn't clog pores

Cons:

isn't really effective for much of anything.. lol doesnt hurt doesn't help.

reduces the size of my whiteheads. reduces some redness. not very effective.

dried out my skin. seems to have stopped working

It worked really well for a while. definitely worth a try.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
