Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Not Pregnant

Cons:

Worst acne breakouts of my life
Constantly Nauseous
Very Emotional
Depressed
No sex drive

I gave this pill a 4 month run and the end result is that this pill is horrible! I've gone from the happiest, most outgoing person, to really sad and depressed. I finished a pack yesterday and will NEVER go on this pill again. I constantly felt sick, and the thought of alcohol was intolerable. My face went from a pimple every now and then to severely broken out and my sex drive was non-existent. DO NOT take this pill!!

Pros:

So Far None

Cons:

Little Breakouts

I have just started using Yaz. I am a little hesitant to go on Accutane and chose this as a hopefully safer option. So far I have not seen to much improvement, but, my acne pimples have reduced in size. Hopefully this will work!

Pros:

my breasts got fuller

Cons:

My breasts were super tender. I had mild acne before starting this birth control, and it got worse.. I had more acne than ever after two weeks of my first pack.. I ended up getting pregant during the 3rd pack, but I think it's just because I was on medication which interacted with the pills effectiveness.

I was on Tricyclin Lo for a year when I was 17 and I had no side effects. I'm 25 now, had a baby when I was 21 and these pills didn't work for me this time around.

Pros:

Yasmin has kept me having short periods and I dont gain weight beause i dont eat alot.

Cons:

I hate that they have made a generic because I think the brand is better. Im getting blood clots also

I would recommend this product if u dont want a baby. It has stopped me from having any more babies. I just dont like the generic and i have asked the doctor to give me brand but that hasnt worked yet. I have used yasmin for almost 4 years now and my only down fall is the generic. Just recently they came out with a generic for the yasmin. Since i have to use generic now it makes me have cramps and i didnt have cramps taking the yasmin. The doctor had told me that there is a difference between the generic and the brand. My insurance doesnt want to pay for the brand anymore unless the doctor approves it.

Pros:

Pregnancy prevention, Cheap to buy

Cons:

Worsened acne

I have been on these for a year. I got on them after having my Mirena (IUD) removed. The Mirena gave me acne and acne on my back and made me bleed for 9 months. Took that out and got on OTC. Back acne cleared up for awhile but face did not clear up. After awhile I got back acne again! Got off of the OTC and face is already more clear. Condoms again. No more hormones for me. Hopefully I do not get pregnant again.

Pros:

I don't really know yet I just started taking it about four days ago

Cons:

Dont know this yet either

O.K. I have been on BC 14 years now and I have tried it all. I have had the "SHOT",Lo-ovral,Yasmine,Yaz,IUD,and I am now on Tri Cy Lo. I have have the worst problems with all of it. I've been in a fog for about a year and a half and I am ready to feel normal again. Girls let me tell you DO NOT take yasmine or Yaz it is awful. I have had more bad side effects on those than any I have ever taken. My poor husband dont even know who i am anymore.Bottom line if you are married or just a happy sain person dont take those two.I hope this new one works for me. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Pros:

predictable light periods, does its job. Clear skin, but never had a prob w/ acne b4.

Cons:

WEIGHT GAIN, i think I put on almost 10 lbs. And dont even bother dieting and exercising to lose it, it wont budge. Made me very irritable and caused a little anxiety. Always bloated. Just switched so we'll see.

If wanna pack on some lbs and become a irritable bitch then go 4 it.
October 18, 2008

Pros:

none that I can think of

Cons:

Irritability, low libido, cramps, nausea, spotting 3rd week before period to begin, fatigue etc etc etc

This didn't work for me, I actually had a sex drive after the baby was born, this killed it...I am currently on Alesse - which is not really any better...(doctor gave full "samples" of both Yaz & Alesse so it didn't cost a thing yet...)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
