Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

no weightgain, no mood swings, keeps acne under control/clearer skin, increased sex drive

Cons:

none that I found what so ever

Yasmin by far is the best contraceptive method out there. I have recently tried Daine 35 just for the sake of it and well realized that it was a HUGE mistake. In two months I have gained approximately 3 pounds, and I am a fairly active person nonetheless. I have also noticed some MAJOR moodswings, LOSS of labido and strange signs of depression. Please girls your body is sensitive as is so don't ruin it any further by taking Daine. Stick to Yasmin if it works well for you. Hormones are a tricky thing so educate yourself as much as you can and tune into your body. I recommend reading the book Sexy Hormones if all fails. Best of luck!

Pros:

Lost a few pounds; that's about it.

Cons:

Depression & irritability. Sleeplessness--always tired. Did nothing to improve my menstrual symptoms. No improvement on acne.

Different people react to different medications. My best friend is on this, and loves Yaz. For me, there was nothing good except I lost a few pounds. I felt low throughout the month, and always tired. I couldn't sleep. I was also irritable. Isn't this what Yaz is supposed to prevent? The lack of sleep was the worst of it. I wonder how many women have this as a side effect and don't realize it's from the birth control. I had the same problem with Yasmin. To top it off, it didn't calm down my period or improve my acne! I expected to at least have that covered with this stuff. Nonetheless, birth control is odd; you literally have to try it to test if it's for you. It's just not for me! If birth control just doesn't settle well with you, don't be surprised if Yaz isn't any better. I think it was the worst of any I've tried.

Pros:

Clearer Skin, Bigger Boobs, no more crying spells and super painful cramps, feeling sick.

Cons:

for the first while I didn't sleep all that well and sometimes felt sick.

It's definately worth it for me to go on it.

Pros:

None, really.

Cons:

I got extremely sick within a week, I was vomiting and sick to my stomach for hours on end. It didn't help my acne at all. I went off of it after 2 1/2 weeks.

If you have a delicate stomach, I don't recommend it.

Pros:

skin already clearing up. bust slightly bigger. no huge side effects

Cons:

slight insomnia and nausea

i have only been using it f0r over a week but when i came on this site and saw what people were saying about the product i thought that i would be dead by now. i have never taken any birth control before but i have not had any side effects that would stop me from taking this. It is helping my acne and im so happy about that!

Pros:

My acne cleared up really well, still get the ocassional blemish but when I think back to how bad it was it's a massive improvement!

Cons:

Disn't have any funny side effects, no weight gain nothing. Having been on the pill for 5 years (I am now 20) I am experiencing cervical erosion due to the contraceptive pill...

Really good if you want to get rid of acne but don't get addicted like I did otherwise you could experience serious health risks like cervical erosion. I used contraceptive pills after nothing else would work and they did have a dramatic effect! I am going to have to stop now though and am hoping to find an alternative!
July 21, 2008

Pros:

Light, very predictable periods, no cramps, no pregnancy.

Cons:

Depression, moodiness, don't feel like self. No change in acne.

Would not be on this unless I felt like I needed to for the meantime. Was put on it because of excessive bleeding during periods causing numerous fainting spells. Definitely thinking about going off birth control~! Hate it, mind feels very uneasy.

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

Everything!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL!!! Oh my, I am horrible with this medication. I have only been on it a few months, but I will not take it any longer. Will be going back to my old pill. Constant crying, not myself, blurry vision, lack of hunger.

Almost lost my boyfriend, the very reason to be ON BIRTH CONTROL!! This pill does the exact opposite of what it claims to cure. I have been horrible since I started it. Take my advice and choose another pill. I am calling my doctor today and getting something diffrent.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
