Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Fuller breasts, predictable periods, lighter periods, less painful cramps. birth control

Cons:

Weight gain, loss of sex drive.

I've been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen for a few months now. I'm definitely not as big as a fan of it as I was with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Overall, I've gained about 10 pounds in my lower abdomen, hips, love handles and butt. I can certainly feel the increased tightness in my jeans. I used to have a strong sex drive with on Tri-Cyclen Lo, now I find myself shoving my boyfriend away from me at times. Before the pill, my period was highly irregular, it was common for me to have a 16-22 day cycle. My periods now are always 28 days. My cramps before the pill were intense, the doctors had me on 1000 mg of Naproxen every 4hrs for the pain. Now, I don't even need a Midol. It's got its advantages and disadvantages. It all comes down to if the individual is willing to lose some of a sex drive and put on a few pounds that are pretty difficult to come off.

Pros:

No weight gain, no bloating, effective birth control, clearer skin.

I was on diane 35 first when my doctor switched me to yasmin saying it would do about the same thing for my skin. In Canada yasmin is fairly cheap around $10-12 before your pharmacy fee, so the price is definatly right. After switching i noticed no major side effects and my acne didn't get worse as i was scared it would have. It's been about a year now that i have been taking yasmin, and with the recent scare over yasmins side effects it's important you don't smoke, you eat well and stay fit while on this pill. i would say my skin isn't 100% clear, i still get a little whitehead here and there but nothing really noticable(i used to have grade 4 acne), so i'm definatly happy with yasmin.

Something that finally worked
My daughter started having an oily complexion when she was 10 years old. Soon after pimples & redness on her forehead began. We tried every cleanser, cheap, expensive, natural, homemade & only seemed to intensify the acne. I began reading everything I could on the Internet. Cleansers dry out the skin which can actually make the skin produce more oil which in turn produces clogged pores & acne. She then just washed her face with warm water, splashed on face with clean hands about ten times & gently pat dry with clean towel, twice daily or when skin looked too oily. Also important to wash your pillow case every few days until oil is under control. Doctor prescribed different ointments which only dried & burned the skin after only a few days. I then read milk thistle can help so off to the naturopath. She prescribed milk thistle for 3 months. This product actually caused more acne to form down the sides of her face. The naturopath recommended to keep taking it as it's cleansing the liver & toxins. That was a mistake and acne got worse. Stopped taking milk thistle after 4 months. We tried no milk products, eliminating certain foods, increasing certain foods, nothing worked. Her period began when she turned twelve. I knew the acne was hormonal. Acne was on her back, forehead & a few scattered around the rest of her face. By the age of twelve she was very discouraged, self esteem lowering & didn't like what she saw in the mirror. I then took her to the doctor in May & asked for a prescription of birth control Diana 35 or Yaz as they were supposed to be the best for controlling acne & to be referred to a dermatologist. It would take 6 months to get into see a dermatologist. My niece was on a low dose birth control which did nothing for the acne. The doctor prescribed Yaz as it is not as strong as Diana 35. I was concerned about blood clots but the doctor reassured us and said you have more of a chance of getting a blood clot while pregnant then on birth control. She began Yaz at the beginning of May. Appointment for dermatologist was November 30. After a few months my husband and I noticed the oily complexion was improving. She still had break outs but no more than before & used spot treatment to dry them out after washing with warm water & concealer to cover the redness and a mineral powder called Pur with a clean brush to even out the skin tone. Important to wash the brush once a week until oil is under control then monthly or so. Always apply on clean skin. Around 4-5 months the break outs were slowly getting less & oil production. My daughter didn't notice, she just wanted all the pimples to be gone. At 5-6 months she would have the occasional pimple and a couple more around her period. By the 6-7 month her skin looks incredible & no breakouts at all!!! She has been on Yaz for 7 months and couldn't be happier. We went to the dermatologist appointment yesterday and he said to keep doing what your doing because it's working. I asked of it's safe to be on Yaz. He said all medications have risks & you can't let what you hear on the news scare you because it's usually from other underlying issues. I asked if she should be using a cleanser and he said don't waste your money. He also mentioned that sometimes the birth control down the road could stop working for acne breakouts. Next step would be Accutane which would stop the acne all together. He said you want to deal with the acne before too many scars form if you continually have breakouts. Slight scaring will heel on its own with time. You have to be on birth control already to take Accutane. I hope this post helps some girls out there that are suffering from acne. Six to seven months seems like forever but the end result is fantastic & you will see improvement at the 4-5 month, just be patient. Also we asked for Yaz not generic pill which I heard can make a difference. Also want to mention it took a 3-4 months for her mood swings to even out & her body to adjust to the hormones from birth control so again, it will get better. Good luck!

Might cure your acne and cost your life
I was on Yasmin for 7 years and it cured my acne 100%, but I could have died because of it. Hormonal treatments might seem like the easy and fast solution for an acne cure, but trust me - it's not worth it. Besides horrible side effects of depression, weight gain, mood swings, headaches etc, this is one of the worst birth control pills out there that can give you blood clots. I got pulmonary embolism last year in both of my lungs because of Yasmin and had to take blood thinners for 6 months. (No genetic tendencies in my family.) I have two friends who also got pulmonary embolism because of Yasmin. I am now on Finacea topical gel and Zinc which work great. I know this is a short review, and if you have any questions write me a message.

Pros:

Pregnancy prevention
Lighter period

Cons:

Tender breasts first month
Food cravings

Started this after getting a free sample from planned parenthood (I wasn't sure which bc method I wanted). At the end of my first pack my breasts started hurting like crazy. And I started craving sweets, which I don't normally eat very often. However. It worked great at lightening my period. I'm always regular but my 3rd day id stop bleeding, then start again with a vengeance. This stuff helped me stop doing that. I haven't seen any weight loss or gain, but I work out lightly 3 times a week so that may help. I read that some womens boobs grew. I'm a 34B and am still waiting for that! Maybe after the 3rd pack?? Lol

Pros:

-decrease in unwanted body hair
-eventual decrease in acne

Cons:

-mood swings
-increased apetite
-acne was worsened before it was better
-slight decrease in libido
-the risk of blood clots is worrying (even if you don't smoke)

I had come off b.c for four months and in that time had developed excess chin & body hair and terrible breakouts along my jaw and cheeks, as well as back and chest. Tried yasmin instead, and initially (first three months) my acne became worse, far more cystic and painful. I am on the fourth month now and all of a sudden my face is almost completely clear! And I've noticed it my excess hair is becoming softer and less noticeable! So far I'm quite pleased with this pill, it was worth sticking out those awful three months! My only concern now is of Yasmin being a greater risk than other b.c for blood clots. I'm a non-smoker, but there's still a risk. Not a bad b.c if you're willing to chance it, and wait out that initial break out. Also I found that other b.c pills I've tried (Alesse, Tri Cycline, Ortho 777) killed my sex drive, but Yasmin isn't too bad so far. fingers crossed!

Pros:

Helps clear acne
Less cramps

Cons:

Low mood for first 2 months just before period
BAD outbreak of spots for first 3 packs
Tender breasts
Bleeding during first pack

I had been on Yasmin before and had forgotten about the bad initial outbreak of spots i got- huge cystic ones along the jaw but this time i had them over my forehead as well, somewhere i never normally get them. I'd just get rid of one then overnight a humongous would appear and stay with me for weeks!! This all started after about my 3rd pill and carried on for 2-3 packs. They seemed to take forever to go down and have left me with some scars but after 4 months my skin has improved quite a lot, with much fewer cystic spots and now just the odd small one. I did bleed for the first pack and my breasts were very tender, plus and i really did notice my mood was quite low just before my period. Thankfully all of this has settled now. I must admit, looking back at how my spots were before taking Yasmin and how bad the initial outbreak was i do wonder if it was worth it but i does help eventually. You really need to give it at least 4 months to notice an improvement- don't give up before then!

Pros:

Clearing skin

Cons:

Not sure yet

I have been on ortho for a week. My skin was the worst it had been in my entire life. I've tried everything, antibiotics, prescription strength creams... The acne I had was mainly around my mouth and cheeks which is normally hormonal. The ortho has cleared me up. I feel so confident now. (I get it at Planned Parenthood by my University)

Pros:

-Reduced acne significantly
-Did not get pregnant
-Breast increased by half a cup
- Reduce severity of cramps during periods
-Shorter periods

Cons:

-Mood swings
-Anxiety (when going from green pills to white pills)
-Fatigue
-Nausea

The pills made me feel uneasy when I was first started taking them. I was anxious, fatigued, and nauseated. It wasn't until the second pack that my body became used to the pills. It really does take a couple months for your body to adjust to the hormones. As for my acne, nothing else has helped my acne as much as the birth control has. I have tried numerous products to help with my acne with no great results, so I turned to birth control. This is probably the best decision I have made since I get so many compliments about my clear skin now. Although I still get one or two pimples during the time of the month. My old acne has disappeared and the irritation and redness that i once had on my cheeks have significantly subsided. Anyone suffering from acne should definitely give this a try! It's also free at planned parenthood.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
