Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

not pregnant, cheap, cleared up mild acne, bigger boobs

Cons:

horrible headaches, VERY tender breasts, fatigued, extreme hunger

This pill is okay. I take the generic - tri sprintec. I've been taking it for a month. I have EXTREMELY tender breast..so sore that i can barely roll over in my sleep!..but on the flip side I went up a cup! I get horrible pounding headaches to the point where I have to lay down and pop tylenol. I always feel tired and lazy. I get extremely hungry even after I've eaten a large meal. On the brighter side, my mild acne has cleared up and I have a much brighter and smoother complexion. No mood swings, no cramps, no bloatedness.

Pros:

Improved acne and regular, lighter periods.

Cons:

Kind of expensive and eventually stopped helping my acne.

I have taken Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for 4 years, and for 3 of those years it worked really well for treating my acne. But for some reason, it hasn't been working as well on my skin lately.

Pros:

No weight gain
No pregnancy

Cons:

Slight nauseous feeling in the mornings

I was on Yasmin for over two years when I changed location and doctors. The new doctor decided to put me on Microgynon 30 which hasn't agreed with me at all, and I shall be going back to Yasmin as soon as possible. Don't know if it clears up skin - I've never had a problem with my skin.

Pros:

Improved acne (50%), regulated hormones, less cramping.

Cons:

Expensive!

This is the first birth control pill I have tried, and I am a virgin so I am using it only to control my acne. I am 21 and have had (apparently hormonal) acne since I was 12. I have been through two courses of Accutane, both of which cleared me while I was taking it but the acne always returned. Yasmin does not prevent my acne but regulates it. For two weeks I get almost no pimples and have beautiful skin. For the other two I break out like crazy (although my PMS breakouts aren't as severe as they used to be...Yasmin makes it so that I can pinpoint the days I will start and stop breaking out!) I used to have moderate acne every day of the month. It definitely helps, but I think I might add spironolactone to ease the PMS acne. At least I know for certain the cause is hormonal! Also, I am down to 93 lbs. While some OC's make you gain weight, I've lost about 10 lbs on yasmin. I've suffered no side effects, and aside from the price it's a great pill.

Pros:

Taken it for 7 years no side effects or pregnancy. Light periods with no craps and knew exact day of my next period. Helps with acne.

Cons:

I just stopped taking the pill (trying to get pregnant) got a bad acne brake out.

This pill is great! Never had a problem or had to worry if it worked and if I was pregnant. Had very clear skin(didn't need makeup). I took it for 7 years with no side effects. One month a was given the wrong script for the pills. The other BC pill made me sooo sick I felt nausea all month. I was glad when I started taking Tri-cyclen again.

Pros:

Prevents pregnancy, regular periods

Cons:

I haven't found any yet

I just started my 4th month today. When I started it my skin seemed to clear up and this past week has been just hell. I don't think it will help out with my acne too much (NOTHING has...and I've tried just about EVERYTHING!) but my period finally got regular with the pills and started exactly when it should have. I tried some other pills in the past and I didn't like how they made me feel, but I've had absolutely no side effects with Ortho Lo. I just hope one day my skin will be clear of acne and I will finally have the confidence of not wearing any makeup :( It's so embarassing.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
