A more dangerous way of using benzoyl peroxide that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. However, when used properly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin without the addition of antibiotics.

Pros:

My doctor originally prescribed me Retin-A but I found it was irritating and drying up my skin too much, Ive been using this for about a month now and I definetly have seen an improvement.

Surprisingly it doesn't aggravate my skin, I recommend it!

Pros:

Easy to use, always available, can be used with other acne treatments.

Cons:

My acne got worse, it bleached the hair that it touched at my hairline and my pillowcase.

Its worth the try, its not only affordable but some people have found it extremely effective. Its not painful and there are no side-effects. You can continue using your daily cleanser and moisturizer and it has no effect on your birth control. It didn't work for me, but it could work for you, and that's why I recommended it. Although it was ineffective for me, it could work for you.

it works for a while.. but just when your skin gets good, it loses its effectiveness. It worked for a while with me, then just stopped.

Pros:

-works quickly
-you don't need much
-if you have insurance it is covered

Cons:

-I did not have any side affects however I use 100% pure argon oil as a moisturizer so that is most likely why

This product is a god send within 5 days my acne significantly improved to the point that people actually noticed. As an acne sufferer for 10+ years I was amazed and I still am. As stated above I used 100% argon oil as my moisturizer I recommend this to everyone. You don't need to use much of either product just enough to give a very thin layer is enough. I am so grateful I asked my dr not only am I getting clear skin but thanks to Insurance it's free even if it wasnt this is well worth it

Pros:

Nothing so far.

Cons:

Dries out my face bad. Burns when I put it on, and leaves my face looking red and irritated.

I have been using this product for about a month now and so far I haven't had anything good to say about it. My face is flaky and hurts. Even just putting on moisturizer burns because of this. So far I am not a fan. Keep in mind I have only been using it for a month. It could get better.

Pros:

-clears up severe acne within a matter of weeks

Cons:

-you will still breakout
-you will eventually build up an immunity to it

I have been using clindoxyl gel for about 8 years. When I first started using it, I had horrible acne and the clindoxyl TOTALLY HELPED! It cleared everything up so that the only thing I had to worry about was the odd small zit that might pop up. As I continued using it however, I slowly built up an immunity to it and now it literally DOES NOTHING for me. I'm 22 and my skin is worse now than it was in highschool when clindoxyl was in its best working order.

Pros:

Worked at healing and preventing acne (including cystic acne breakouts)

Cons:

When initially started severely dried skin, continued to add moisturizer
Bleaches everything!
Can only get as prescription not over the counter

I love this prescription! even if its bleached all my sleep tops. I had a severe breakout of cystic acne after stopping Tri-Cyclin for 6 months. Now I'm back on that prescription, plus Clindoxyl at night with moisturizer on sensitive areas that get dry, and Proactiv during the day. I'm not sure my skin has ever looked better, in the past I usually was battling at least one or two pimples and now nothing! Or if I do tingly pimple sensation I just put it on and next day its gone. You do have to be patient it took 2 months before I really believed and saw and difference (Boyfriend saw a big difference in a couple of weeks). It does bleach your cloths but I was prepared for that after using Proactiv for years. I only wish the tube was bigger, I'm now rationing the medication. I feel like I've tried everything over the counter, I highly recommend this topical prescription!

Pros:

-Very Minimal Side affects
-Apply only to areas that are infected
-Does not have any odour so it can be applied when leaving the house

Cons:

-Slight residue on face after application

I started taking Clindoxyl a few months after I stopped taking Tetracycline, which is another common acne prescription. Although tetracycline was successful in preventing breakouts and removing acne on the majority of my face I was still getting breakouts on my forehead. I noticed positive results within 3 weeks. The acne of my forehead had subsided and I was not experiencing any breakouts. I did not notice any major side affects.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
