Note: Prescription and over-the-counter adapalene share the same efficacy percentage due to non-specific research, but prescription strength likely performs better.

Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
This topical retinoid medication provides partial relief at higher prescription dosages, but don’t look for complete clearing, especially at over-the-counter strength. Relatively affordable and comes with less side effects than tretinoin, the other affordable topical retinoid. As a bonus, it improves the look of skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles a bit too.

Pros:

Makes skin less oily, reduces blemishes, stops huge acne from popping up, easliy applied

Cons:

As i am dark skinned it can make skin tone a little lighter, but not really noticable. You have to use it everyday to see effects.
Can make skin dry/red if a whole load is applied. Use sensibly

I've used differin now for about 7 months. Best topical treatment ive used. Better than benzoyl peroxide as differin does not make wholes in your skin. It is good for mild/moderate persistant acne. It is good at stopping most of my acne whilst waiting to go on accutane. My acne is persistant so i have to go on accutane to stop it, but has significantly reduced due to differin. But still going to go on accutane as i cant keep on using differin forever. If you put a whole load on at once can make skin very dry and red. Only use small amount, then use little by little more once used to it.

Pros:

You put in on b-4 you go to bed. You only need a little bit

Cons:

If i didn't have insurance, it would be too exspensive for me i think. And it's kind of greesy feeling.

I think this stuff works. I have only been using it for a week, and i can tell it's getting rid of thise bumps that would never go away, no matter how much i washed my face and didn't touch it. It's drying out my skin alot, but i have just been putting on more lotion than i normally would b-4 i got this stuff.

Pros:

It pretty much cleared my face in about three weeks, I'm talking about clear skin!!!! my face was finally clear, it was even looking, i had gorgeous skin.
It worked for me 120%

Cons:

The first couple of days maybe the first week my face broke out with pimples everywhere it was nightmare, I looked like hot mess I think for the whole time my face was a mess I didn't go out, but after the first week my face started to clear.

The Bottom Line is that MY FACE GOT FREE OF ACNE!!!. Now the Only other con I had was the price with insurance i only paid $15, with out the tube is $225 = ( So for about six months My face got so much better Like I got compliments of how good my skin looked and so soft, and it was Like i wish I could show you guys pictures. Now this is a life style always washing your face EVERYSINGLEDAY!!!! and not touching. Now i did get pimples once in a while but but just by putting some extra Differing on the actual pimple by next day It was gone. I said for about Six months because after that I quit my job so I don't have insurance right now so i haven't been able to buy it so now the pimples are coming back, but eventually i'll go buy it again. IT WORKS! BOTTOM LINE - WELL TO ME IT WORKED.

Pros:

Cleared my skin after years of embarrassment and whiteheads. I tried everything! This with the combination of antibiotics cleared me in a few weeks. Now I can go make-up-less and I NEVER thought I could do this!!!

Cons:

Price. Dry skin patches.

Just try it. You will soon be zit free. It has changed my life for the better.

Pros:

Light, isn't as strong as the Retin-A Micro I used before, works well to clear up bumps immediately, doesn't smell bad or leave a heavy film

Cons:

Can make face tender if you use it daily, sometimes makes me extra oily and shiny, doesn't work as fast as the retin-a micro and it doesn't work fast to remove dark spots

I like it a lot. The Retin-A Micro basically burned my skin off and was just too strong. This was an easy transition - not nearly as harsh and I didn't have the initial "gets worse" breakout because I had already been using Retin-A Micro. I've only bee using it 2 weeks and my skin looks TONS better - it's all one color (no more big red sections) and smooth. I've begun using Mederma to fade my old dark spots.

Pros:

I have used differin for over a year, and for the first couple of monthis it seemed to be working.

Cons:

Now I break out regularly, and while it is not quite as bad as before it is still noticeable. I almost always have 2 or 3 large pimples and a couple of smaller ones. It is also VERY expensive.

Differin would only be worth the very high price if it were absolutely 100% effective. It is not worth 120 dollars per bottle to go from having 5 zits at a time to having 2.

Pros:

it works every now and then but mostly at first . After continues use the only time it works is when you apply alot but it then makes your skin flaky. there is no win win

Cons:

Its absolutely expensive and it really dries up your skin making it over sensitive.

I have been using it for a year ( 3percent) and my skin and eyelids are super dry. I feel my skin will get older sooner because of all this dryness and sensitivity. I use it every other night. my derma told me the dryness around my eyes is because I have too much of the meds ( differin) and to stop using it for a month and only apply mosturizer. WHAT!? I tried a week and I was alreay breaking out, so I use every other day, until the tube runs out. Not worth it for me

Pros:

it has begun to work after about 6weeks makes skin soft easy to apply

Cons:

skin is a little red also no results for 1st 6weeks

it's is worth a try I have done everything and this has certainly worked the best give it time

Pros:

clear areas on my face were softer.

Cons:

I've used this for about 2 months and what was a less severe case of acne turned into horrible breakouts on my chin area. A few days after I stopped use of this product without consulting my dermotoligist I noticed slight improvements.

I'm not sure if I just didn't give this product a long enough chance or what, but I was shocked at how my skinned looked after just a few weeks of use. I was using the product to improve my skin and instead I broke out the worst that I've ever broken out. Everyone is different, my dermotologist was sure I would love the product, but I was not only unsatisfied, but shocked at my results using it.
January 5, 2009

Pros:

It works fast. A little goes a long way.

Cons:

It makes skin worse before it gets better. Can hurt/burn sometimes while the acne is getting "worse before getting better".

If you want something that will help you skin in the end, ask for this - but if you want something to work overnight, this isn't the product.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
