Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
This topical retinoid medication provides partial relief at higher prescription dosages, but don’t look for complete clearing. Relatively affordable and comes with less side effects than tretinoin, the other affordable topical retinoid. As a bonus, it improves the look of skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles a bit too.

Pros:

-pimples don't last as long and heal faster
-fewer infected pimples
-prevents some pimples from ever forming
-all your acne comes to the surface

Cons:

-all your acne comes to the surface (not pretty at first)
-i still get some breakouts, especially around my menstrual cycle
-takes a few months to really work (make sure you use regularly!)

Before i had terrible breakouts with pimples that would get infected and painful, especially on my chin and around/ on my nose. Ive been using the product for a little over 2 months, and my acne is now definitely more under control, though i still break out on my chin (pretty sure this is just all the hidden acne its bringing up from deep within my skin). Definitely heals pimples faster and helps with some scarring. With a prescription i paid 50 bucks, but it will last FOREVER because you really only use a tiny bit every night. Good product overall, takes some time to work, so be patient!

Pros:

Only been on differin for two months and my acne has already started to clear.
Skin is looking a lot better, in smoothness and complexion.

Cons:

Dry skin to begin with, but easily avoided with a moisturiser.

It works extremely well, but you must be persistent and not give up hope. I did not really have an initial breakout, so i was lucky. Yes this product does take a while, but if most people were able to read it says it will take at least 3 months for it to start working. It says it on the pamphlet you get with it. I have been using differin for about 2 months now and have seen amazing results. I've tried proactiv and many other things. Proactiv completely destroyed my skin. Also for the retards in other posts that say it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, all antibiotics, washes, topicals, creams anything to do with treating acne will make your skin more sensitive to sun, as well as this. It's easily fixed by applying it at night before bed and washing it off in the morning and applying a moisturiser.

Pros:

made the texture of my skin nice
faded hyperpigentation

Cons:

didnt do as much as i wanted for acne, still got cysts

i bet this is good for mild cases of acne, i used both the .1 and .3 and still got cystic acne on occasion, the initial breakout was pretty awful, would have been worth it if it kept me clearer in the long term but it didnt. Did make the overall texture of my skin very nice though and faded red marks really well. i reccomend trying it but for many people it will only be a small step in clearing your skin, i am now using retin a which i like better. ( however differin is much more tolerable than retin a)

Works AND no side effects!
I was prescribed Differin 0.1% gel, as well as being prescribed lymecycline tablets (1 a day).. Been on both prescriptions about 2/3 weeks and my skin has all cleared, literally only about 2 spots on my face!!! Obviously I can't say which treatment is doing the magic but as a combination all I can say is AMAAAZING!!! Really recommend it! Also, I've read that some people experience irritation and itching with this gel but so far I've had no side effects!

Pros:

Very gentle on skin.
Reducess inflammation caused by various acne.
No odor, dye, or fragrence.

Cons:

Effective for only about 3 months then stopped.

This product was pretty good for me, but eventually seemed to stop working. My dermatologist told me that she was afraid that would happen because of the severity of my acne. She told me that Differin .3% gel was a synthetic retinoid, so it was not considered a true retinoid in her eyes. I was instructed to continue using Differin, but to use it in the morning. She also prescribed Tazorac .5% gel and instructed me to use it in the evening before bedtime.

Pros:

*Started working the first few days
*Cheap (with insurance)
*Doesn't dry skin
*Only have to apply it before you go to bed

Cons:

None

I'm 20 and I have had acne since I was 13, used just about everything, over the counter stuff, home remedies, you name it. I finally went to the doctor after I just couldn't look at myself anymore without crying. The doctor prescribed me differin and doxycycline, after the first few days I could see results. I was so excited and I couldn't believe it. I eventually stopped taking the doxycycline cause it made me feel horrible and sick after taking it but I kept using the differin every night and besides for old acne scars...my face is clear.

Pros:

Clears my skin up and keeps it clear, gives skin a nice texture, nothing else works as well for me, my copay is very low

Cons:

You have to be careful about the amount you use because it can burn you, can take a week or so to work

This is a great product that has softened and cleared up my skin. It prevents new breakouts and clears up existing pimples pretty quickly.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
