Pros:

acne bumps gone
nice skin!

Cons:

takes up to 3months to see change
dries skin out at first
makes skin worse BEFORE better

overall, it will make skin seem worse but its just getting all the gross acne out. over time it will make skin seem much more better and you will see an improvement...

Pros:

Differin made my skin really dry at first. Especially around the mouth area. But I must say after about 4 months of use I do see an improvement. But if I miss one night I can guarantee a breakout within a few days. I'm afraid to stop using it.

Cons:

Takes awhile to kick in. Can be costly w/o insurance.

It's ok.... if you are diligent.

Pros:

Easy to use and only once a day

Cons:

Dried out skin, redness, itchiness.
It worked for the first 3 weeks but then the acne got worse thatn it was before I started Differin

Does not work, it makes it worse

Pros:

none

Cons:

didn't help my acne one bit, made my skin sensitive, dry

I know this has worked for many people, but I used it for 3 months and didn't see any results at all. That sucked! So I was switched to retin-a micro and that has given me some real results.
March 20, 2009

Pros:

cleared up some of my acne

Cons:

it made my skin very red and dry. then i would wake up in the morning and my skin would be oozing, peeling, and swollen. It also discolored my 80% of my face.

i would definitely not recommend this to anyone. my skin, despite having no acne, looks horrible. right now, my skin is oozing and itching.

Pros:

It clears up acne for me in about a week if I use it twice a day. It really does work; however, I have to stop using it due to cons below (pain, too dry etc).

Cons:

Intensely dry up my skin so much that I cannot even move my face after a shower. It also leaves my face super shiny like glossy plastic. Makes my skin red too. Relatively painful. Doesn't prevent more acne from developing though.

It's good! I would recommend it to treat acne temporarily....

Pros:

cheap
last long

Cons:

drys skin out
skin started to peel
burning!!!!! pain!!!!!

no results it burns like hell and it drys my skin out very bad it even burns when I put on lotion
March 17, 2009

Pros:

Makes skin softer. I've tried gel and cream; cream doesn't work as good but it makes your skin SOFT+no need for lotion.

Cons:

Didn't do much for my acne. I used it for about 6 months. You're supposed to see results way before then, but I did not. If anything.

Look at the cons. If anything, it made my acne worse. I wouldn't recommend it. Try another retinoid.

Pros:

Easy to put on, one tube lasts a while.

Cons:

Doesn't work.

Due to unchangeable circumstances, I had to go one night without using the product and it took nearly a month for my skin to go back how it had been the night before.

I've used this product (almost) every night for over a year and I still get very bad random breakouts. My acne is worse than it was when I was first prescribed Differin. I spent the first few months just washing my face twice a day and putting it on at night. When it didn't work, I started putting it on twice a day still nothing. Started using it in conjunction with acne fighting soap, and that helped a little (until that night). From there I switched to deep-cleaning soap and now I use that twice a day, and Differin once a day. I still have acne, after all that, and my skin is very red and sensitive. Don't get it if you want to have clear skin. I now classify my acne as "moderately severe", when before it was light to moderate.

Pros:

*I have oily, ethnic hyperpigment combination skin*
provides a glowing, fleshy and rosy tone
reduces inflammation of active spots, and helps the appearance of dark residual spots. I've noticed that it evens out the oiliness in my skin

Cons:

adjusting to what amount works for you.. my derm provided free samples, and i used one tiny tube per night.
people who have dryer and more sensitive skin may consider differin for only spot control

keeps my face under control. i can tell the difference without one night's use. i notice my face is even in tones, oiliness, and it might be individual results, but it causes appropriate rosiness. (I appreciate not having to use blush. other people may disagree)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
