Pros:

Clears skin, actively removes any skin problems under the surface, non-greasy, non-smelly, can be used before bed.

Cons:

Causes irritation in the beginning on sensitive skin - red, itchy areas. Takes a while to work, making the problem worse before better.

I have been using it on my upper back and face. I have to say it works WONDERS on my face... clears the problem beautifully, now and again an odd red bump, but I've only been using Differin for about 4 or so weeks, and I am really quite happy with the results. The itchiness of the first two weeks is gone, and now I am just applying it consistently. I'm yet to see the similar results on my back, but the skin is really clearing up now and spots healing faster than expected. This product works - so have patience, and stick with it.

Pros:

It smoothed out a lot of my "little" bumps that were on my forehead

Cons:

It has given me dry skin and has made me break out in cysts all over

My results (from week to week) have been fluctuating. I am on the end of week 5 now and my face is covered with spots. I scar VERY easily (red pigmented spots that stay foreeever) so even though I may only have like 4 pimples, it looks like I have 20 something. I don't know what is in store for me in the next couple weeks but hopefully anything better. The actual RESULTS are shown when you have been on differin for 8 weeks so I need to stick it through. Hang in there everyone.....it sucks for everyone in the beginning, but what price would you pay for clear skin? Ya, thats what I thought.

Pros:

for those of you who say it makes your skin worse, it makes it worse for a week because it's working on acne that is below the skins surface...meaning it is working!! after the initial few weeks...it is AMAZING and clears up your skin by 6 weeks.

Cons:

nothing

don't quit after 2 weeks....differin is working if your skin gets worse! after that you will be amazed at what it does.

Pros:

None.

Cons:

It made my acne worse. Also it totally dried out my skin. (To the point where it hurt to smile! I felt like I had just gotten Botox or something... Lotion didn't really help this problem either. Might have been my lotion though.)

Bleck. I hate this stuff. It made me break out in places I've never broken out before! I only used it for a week and a half so maybe if I had stuck with it...just maybe...it might have cleared up my skin. However, I wasn't willing to take that risk. This is one of those products that either works for you, or it doesn't. And I could tell right off the bat that this wasn't going to work for me. Luckily I didn't spend any money on this product (my dermatologist let me have a few samples). If you're thinking about trying this product I'd suggest sampling it first to make sure that this is the right product for you. BOTTOM LINE: It didn't work for me...but that doesn't mean it couldn't work for you.

My doctor prescribed Differin along with 5% benziq acid for my acne. Unfortunately, my insurance will not cover this until the beginning of next year...but I'm planning on getting it anyway because I need to control my acne. How long does a 50 gm tube of differin generally last?

i tried differin for only two weeks, it made my skin horribly worse. im sure with time it would have gotten better but i couldnt handle having that awful skin, it was worse than i'd ever had it. but im sure it does not do this to some people, it could just be me.

Pros:

made my skin a little worse than before (not a very big difference), but eventually cleared up with time.

Cons:

you have to use it all over your face, not just the problem areas.

I used it on the problem areas and ended up getting pimples where i NEVER EVER had problems before. the derm said it's b/c if you only use it on the problem areas, it's basically "pushing the pimples to areas that were clear before". It was horrible to have that happen, and what's worse - my skin scars SO easily, even when i don't pop anything so i now have 3 scars due to that. otherwise works very well. i only use it once at night and i like it. i still have a few little pimples monthly, but not nearly as bad as what i had before using the medicine.

Used it for about 2 months now with Doxycycline Tablets (1 per day). The first week my face almost completely cleared up but after that it went back to my old self. I just kept using the tablets and cream and now 2months later the acne is starting to reside and im seeing more and more clear skin each day! Just gotta keep at it for a while =]

Pros:

affordable, non irratating, shrinks poors and makes complextion look more even

Cons:

causes burried acne to come out initially.

im 24 and have tried everything. i think a lot of comments im hearing about this drug making you skin look horrible are coming from people who were never really that bad off to begin with. my derm has me on this stuff an nicotinamide which is an anti inflamatory. this stuff is working better than acutane so far. im about 2 weeks in. it has brought out the deep acne and i did get some cysts. however the nicomide brings it down real quick. im still not completly clear but what i love about this stuff is that it has removed some of my scars and made my face a more uniform color (and no that color is not red lol). no redness or irratation to report. like i said my face has been ravaged by harsher products before so this relatively light adopalene drug has felt as mild as baby lotion to me. i highly recommend this with nicomide and not for people who could easily be treated with antibiotics like some of the posts ive read.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
