A way of using benzoyl peroxide in combination with the topical retinoid, adapalene, that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. Comes with side effects for the first weeks and can bleach fabric. Note: When used correctly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin.

be careful
This stuff combined with oral erythromycin saved me. Had severe acne with pretty bad cysts and nothing else could get rid of them. Didn't notice an initial breakout because my acne was so bad an I dint really pay attention! Funny thing was I probably used it incorrectly. I would lightly wash my face with a face cloth and hot water then apply like 3 times as much as you're supposed to. I don't recommend this btw. It did burn initially but it didn't really bother me as my face was so painful already and everything else I'd tried for the past 5 months had burned like hell as well. Problem is that I kept using it for about a month or 2 after I got completely clear and it would no longer make my skin drier but I would wake up with oily skin and some little whiteheads/crusty bits on my nose (see my 07/09/14 post for the full story) and now I'm dealing with what I think is a different escalated problem. Long story short it can be a lifesaver and definitely worth a try but be careful as over use can leave you open to other problems.

I'm 17, female, have mild to cystic acne, depending on the season. My experience with Epiduo was good, I'd say. I began using it last summer. At first, I was horrified at my skin. I could not believe that a doctor would prescribe it to someone. What I was also doing was slathering it on, twice a day. More than usual. So of course, because I wasn't using it as prescribed, my skin was dry, irritated, itchy, and I was breaking out more. I kept at it for about two weeks and then put the product away in my medicine cabinet. A few months later, at the end of August, I was fed up with spending money on neutrogena and clearisil products that don't work. I decided to be patient, and give it a try again. I also read the package insert this time. It stated that acne may worsen during the first stages of treatment because it is treating all the acne you can't see. Which actually makes sense. A drug can't stop a blemish in the middle of it's cycle. The pimple has to become a pimple and get rid of the clogged pore, or it will just remain a bump under the skin, which makes the texture of the skin awful. So I stuck it out again for a few weeks. I would use it at night as directed, and not use too much. Using more product doesn't increase absorption. The only was to increase absorption is rubbing in, increasing the surface area that you apply the product, and applying to clean skin. I used it on my back and chest as well. I used a st. Ives lotion on my back and chest after I took a shower the next day to replenish the moisture I lost from using Epiduo. As far as face lotions go, I recommend clean and clear dual action. It has a very small amount of salicylic acid, not enough to overdry your skin. I also recommend yes to grapefruit moisturizer. It works great but it's a little expensive. My back cleared up with no scarring, the same for my chest. It was amazing. The texture of my skin improved immensely. My face cleared too, except I would occasionally get acne on my nose, which I attribute to my large pores in that area. What you have to realize is that acne is ongoing and you're always going to have acne prone skin. The best thing you can do is find a treatment that takes care of the main symptoms of acne: bacteria, oil, and clogged pores. If you don't treat the other symptoms your skin is experiencing, then the treatment won't work. Moisturize! It doesn't matter if your face feels greasy or gross. Do not skip a day of moisturizing or it will upset your skin's balance. Cleanse and exfoliate! Try using pink grapefruit daily scrub or a st. Ives scrub. Even use a gentle cleanser like cetaphil. Although you're not supposed to use salicyclic acid with Epiduo, my skin was clear using neutrogena's pink grapefruit scrub, clean and clear moisturizer, and Epiduo. The other thing that helped was patience. I wasn't looking in the mirror every day looking for results. I wasn't popping my acne, I was just letting it run its course and eventually it stopped showing up. Also, when using makeup, MAKE SURE IT IS NON COMEDOGENIC. I suggest physicians formula mineral wear, the most minimal coverage you're comfortable with, and apply it with a foam beauty round. They come in like 12 packs and are cheap to replace when the old one is nasty. Which is a good idea to minimize bacteria. Use your moisturizer 20 minutes before applying the powder. Use liquid foundation instead of concealer if you need more coverage. Also non comedogenic. Do all of what I just said, make it a routine, and don't watch for results. It will take a while but I promise this product works. The only reason I stopped using it was that my insurance changed and instead of 26$ a month, it was $240. No way I was paying that! Hope this helped.

WILL NOT WORK IF YOU DO NOT USE CORRECTLY

Pros:

ACNE GONE!
FAST!
MUST USE ROUTINE!!

Cons:

WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT ROUTINE!
w/o routine will take forever
EXPENSIVE w/o coupon!!!

I used this for years... and it did me no justice. Until, I found myself a routine that changed my skin... forever! This will work! It is a long but useful routine! Start off by washing your face with Purity Cleanser, be sure to really get everywhere. Then, once dry, use Clean & Clear deep cleaning toner. Use a cotton square/ball to lightly rub against skin. DO NOT SCRUB!!! Depending on the time of day, use a moisturizer or sunscreen (Night: Clean & Clear Dual Action OR Day: Obagi Healthy Skin Protection) IF you are still dry, use Josie Maran Argan Oil to clear up any dry patches. Then, apply your Epiduo. Let it sit for AT LEAST 15 minutes before applying makeup, moisturizer, ect. This routine has helped me so much. My skin was clearer in 3 days. And, I will never stop using this routine!

It takes awhile, but it's worth it!
My experience with Epiduo has been some what of a roller coaster. I just hit the three month mark using the product. First off, let me say that I am vigilant in washing my face every night and using the cream before I go to bed. However, when I first started using the cream, I was mortified. Like many other reviews, my face felt like it was on fire in the beginning. My skin was extremely sensitive around my eyes and mouth. It was also very blotchy. After that pain subsided, my face began to break out. And I mean really breakout. These breakouts were 100X worse than my original breakouts. Not only did I have new pimples, blackheads and blemishes appearing every hour (literally), but my face was also EXTREMELY greasy and dry at the same time. It was gross. I got to the point where I called my dermatologist ready to fight her. Okay, not really, but I was pissed! After my derm talked me down and I stuck with the product for a few more weeks, I am finally starting to see results! It took close to two and half months for me to get there, but my skin is finally leveling out. My break-outs have almost completely stopped. And when I do get a new blemish, they are very small and go away very quickly. My complexion is much brighter and more consistent. I'm finally starting see the results I was originally seeking. I know results vary for each individual, but hopefully people who are going through the same experience will find some hope in this review. Things most certainly got worse, way worse, before they got better. So far though the results have been worth it.

good, but only as needed

Pros:

Pimples flatten over night
Prevents pimples

Cons:

Redness and Peeling
Rash around mouth

I don't use Epiduo daily, only when I have a breakout. It is highly irritating so I recommend if you are going to use it, only use very basic skincare like cetaphil and a mild moisturizer OR it will sting! I was using my regular moisturizer and every time I applied it, it stung like 1000s of hot needles! So beware, it will make your skin very sensitive even after you have stopped using it for a few days. Good to always keep some epiduo in the cupboard as it really does clear pimples overnight. Be careful around the mouth area though as it seemed to cause me a bumpy rash!

Epiduo heals

Pros:

Clears the little pimples, big pimples!
A little goes a long way!
Feels nice and cooling on skin(:

Cons:

Not a cure, need consistency
Dries out skin minimally

Epiduo, with consistency, will keep your acne away. No picking, touching, nothing! It is also nice as a spot treatment, and you don't need too much. A pea-sized blob will do it. Also, it may dry your skin out a little so moisturize! Mine did, but I have sensitive skin.

Works with persistence

Pros:

Gets rid of redness
Flattens bumps

Cons:

Burns for few days
Must be used every day
Makes skin dry, flaky, and tight

Epiduo is a fine product, at first I didn't think it was working, all it did was sprout more acne in some places. But after a few months it does its job nicely. For the first few days it will also burn your skin, but you get used to it. It should probably be used with a cleanser to get maximum effects. It flattens bumps and also takes away redness which is great! I haven't used it for that long but it has shown results and other people have told me of its effect. It also makes your skin very dry and flaky and makes it feel tight.

Good

Pros:

cleared my skin significantly
easy to use

Cons:

bleached clothes
some sensitivity

I used this in conjunction with Doxy, so this is really a review of both together (I will also post under that product). I saw improvement in my skin in a week, although it took about 6-8 weeks to clear as best it could. When I upped my doxy I saw further improvement. I am moving on to accutane, becuase I cannot use this on my back or shoulders due to bleaching, but if you only suffer facial acne I really recomend it as I am almost totally clear. I also recomend it for teenagers who may be suffering hormal acne - I am 26 and show no signs of clearing so really want something permanent., but for teens who may clear up in time, this is less dramatic than accutane and may be sufficient.

Pretty good

Pros:

Works well

Cons:

Not for overly sensitive skin

Ever since I hit puberty I've always had acne. My skin is also very oily and sensitive. My doctor prescribed me epiduo and prescription of oral antibiotics about a year ago then I ran out (my pharmacy tried charging me over $200 for one tube!) and my skin flared up allot. My skin usually flares up before my period. I'm happy to have it back and it takes a month or two to really clear up my skin. It burns your skin if you use too much gel though. Fortunately, my doctor redirected me to another pharmacy where I was able to get my tube of epiduo for free with my insurance.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
