Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

- Easy to apply, just use a cotton pad.
- Helps fade acne scars/post-acne hyperpigmentation.
- Comes in multiple forms/product types.
- Doesn't lead to breakouts.
- Personally, I didn't mind the smell at all, but for those who do, it doesn't last long.

Cons:

- Can be a bother to find. Only about half of the drugstores/supermarkets around me carry it.
- I found it to be effective for dealing with hyper-pigmentation, but I don't think it was a huge help for pustles and current acne. On the other hand, I've only had a few pimples since I've been using it.
- Can sting a bit if not diluted, and temporarily left my pale complexion reddened, so it isn't something you can apply a minute before walking out the door.
- Drying if not diluted.

First off, for the record: I used Dan's regimen for some time before taking up tea tree oil. The regimen was first very effective for me, but my second time around with it led to scarring. Not terrible ice-pick or boxcar scarring, but considerable hyperpigmentation. My face was smooth, but it still looked acne-infested... This was (and is) my first time I've had to deal with scarring. I'm not big into "herbal" treatments, which is what I viewed tea tree oil as, but my post-acne scarring was so bad that I figured, "Why not try this out?" I saw results within a few days: my hyperpigmentation where zits once were had started to become less noticeable, and the color of my cheeks started to smooth out. Little by little, the improvements continued as I kept using the oil. I'm now 2 or 3 weeks in with my tea tree oil use, and I can still say that I'm genuinely seeing progress! Currently, I use Desert Essence tea tree oil (100% pure) as my main tea tree oil-related treatment. Using cotton balls, I apply it to my entire face once a day, sometimes twice. Best to buy the oil in a 1oz sized vial or larger, I think, and completely pure. On the subject of application, I strongly recommend that people apply this to the whole face, not as a spot treatment, to maximize the "smoothing" effect. I don't apply it diluted. I've also more recently taken to using the Oregon Soap Company's tea tree and calendula bar for a facial soap. 8 bucks, but hey, I got it as a gift, and I don't have anything bad to say about it! I also received The Body Shop's Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash as a gift; I'm not sure how I'll take to it, however, because it has tons of chemical ingredients, where as the the tea tree stuff I've used thus far as all been pure/organic. Bottom line, tea tree oil is great for post-acne hyperpigmentation, may be effective for acne itself, and while it may not be a one-application miracle cure, my experience tells me that you WILL see

Pros:

works fastest as a spot treatment, 5% dilution for overall face

Cons:

using 100% will cause extreme damage to ur skin. only spot treat with 100%, very drying without moisturizers, causes scars and red skin tone if used at high concentration for long periods

using this at 100% on my whole face was the biggest mistake i have ever made with a product. Im indian with brown skin tone, the tea tree oil worked at stopping break outs but my face has become so dark ive developed melasma. i cannot comment on people of other skin types, but for indian and asian skin, only spot treat at 100%, i still spot treat but the melasma effects are still present even after 6 months from discontinuing it. to use on ur whole face, only use a 5% dilution in a moisturizer, water will not mix properly with it. i cannot stress this enough, please dont make the same mistake i did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! currently, i am having amazing results with apple cider vinegar as a toner for the past couple weeks

strong and powerful
I use tea tree oil in quite a few different ways when I'm having especially bad breakouts, because its quite strong on the skin I don't use the essential oil alone everyday but some face products I use daily have it as an ingredient. when I have a smaller breakout I tend to just dab a bit of the oil onto spots which are specifically enflamed and sore with a q-tip but when the breakout is larger I use the oil with my facial steamer (you could do the same by adding a few drops to hot water and placing your head over the bowl) this opens up your pores and really helps your skin absorb the tea tree. I've found that this drastically helps reduce inflammation of spots which helps them look less red and they tend to heal quicker. the only problem I have with this is that it can dry you skin out if you use it regularly because the oil is very concentrated so if you have very dry skin you might want to be careful when using this and always use a good moisturiser after application.

My pimples were reduced and I was so happy. But some of the results weren't long term which made me not so happy

Pros:

Made my skin less oilier

Cons:

No soaping feeling?

I got my Tea Tree Oil Facial Foam at The Body Shop and it really helped my face to be less oily. I also got this other product which is a tea tree oil formula from The Body Shop. I applied it to my ache before sleeping, the next day, my ache is less red.

Pros:

-Works great on cysts and other mild to sever acne.
-Helps reduce red 'bumps' that are caused by cysts

Cons:

Dries out skin so make sure to moisturize, expensive

I used this to treat my cyst that formed next to my eye and it helped it reduce it and finally make it go away. Word of caution: don't use this product to cover your whole face with it. Instead use it on spots with a Qtip. Also... Do NOT use this on skin where you applied benzil peroxide or anything else that dries out skin. If you do your skin will get extremely red and irritated.

Spot treating worked for me
Spot treating tea tree oil on my problem spots surely did help - dried the spots and smoothed my complexion. I did stop due to my skin becoming slightly sensitive and having to start Accutane, but when I did use this stuff it would work. I did not use a carrier oil.

Pretty soft skin :)

Pros:

Makes my skin soft and glowy
Helps acne. Not as effective as BP, but very good.
Earthy scent :)

Cons:

Have to dilute it.
Mild burning sensation on application
You need to be sure your brand is reputable

I dilute this, 1 part tea tree oil to 10 parts water. I then apply a couple layers over my face letting them dry (doesn't take more than a minute) and then add moisturizer. Before this I was using BP (currently using the one from acne.org) 2-3 times a day for over a year. It healed my acne, but it doesn't go well under makeup and dryness made my skin look dull and irritated. So now I use tea tree oil under my makeup, and use BP in the evening / overnight, or any time I'm not going to wear makeup. I've been doing this for two weeks and my skin has never been so soft and glowing. It also seems to be helping with the oil production, probably because it's not overdrying my skin? It burns slightly at application but not really any differently from BP. I love the smell, it's just smells natural and earthy :)

Pros:

WORKS!

Cons:

Can really dry skin

One side of my face used to be really red, for some reason. I used to cover it up with makeup. Then I started using TTO, overnight, put some on a q-tip and rub on areas you want to clear. It works, the redness and weird texture on that cheek dissappeared! But the only thing is, sometimes you cant use it daily cuz it dries out and can cause flaking around certain areas.
