Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

Reduces inflammation
Good for spot treatments
Inexpensive
Works quickly
All natural

Cons:

Can be drying
The smell might bother some people, but I actually like it

I LOVE tea tree oil. Love it. It's like my all natural BP. If I have an inflamed pimple, or a whitehead or blackhead that I popped, I'll apply some tea tree oil on it with a q-tip and in the morning, you can't even tell there was something there. I think it also prevents it from getting infected. It also dries up zits and makes them a lot less noticeable. Make sure your tea tree oil is 100% and doesn't have any extra stuff in it. For me, it's a nice natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide, and works great for oily skin. (: Just make sure you're not allergic or sensitive to it first before you slather it all over your face, or you might get an unwanted allergic reaction.

Get rid of those stubborn pimples!
Whenever I had a stubborn pimple, I just ice it down and then use a qtip and place tea tree oil on the pimple bout 3 times a day. It's completely gone in like 2 days. Works every time.

Causes breakouts
I have a sensitive oily acne prone skin. I have used tea tree remedies several times (pure oil, a face wash, masks, ...) because everyone told me it was the best remedy. NOT FOR ME!!! Every time I use it I get massive breakouts and my existing pimples become cystic. My skin really hurts and gets irritated. So be careful tea tree might not be for you, it could get worse.

Best acne treatment ever used!
Best thing to treat bad pimples! On a Sunday, I had a pimple right in between my eyes on my nose. I tried to pinch it but it made it worse. Monday, it was so huge, red, swollen, and filled with pus. So I took out my Tea Tree Oil and directly applied it. Each day it was getting better and better. And by Friday it was COMPLETELY GONE! Not even a tiny mark! I was astounded! It's the fastest a pimple has ever disappeared on me, and it was the worst, infected pimple I've ever had! It does make your skin dry, so dilute it with water if you are going to apply it all over your face, and always use a good moisturizer! When I dilute it in water and then apply it to my face, it doesn't really get dry. But for that one pimple, I didn't dilute it because I wanted the straight stuff, and it worked brilliantly! Highly recommended!

Finally!!

Pros:

Gets rid of acne
Clears hyperpigmentation

Cons:

Kinda burns
Dries skin

I'm 20 years old and I've been suffering with cystic acne since I was 18. A couple months after I turned 18 I started birth-control. at first it was doing wonders with helping my cramps and the couples zits I would get before my period. But a couple weeks later for some reason I started to get whiteheads all over my chin and my cheeks. Not just small little whiteheads, but huge nasty white painful bumps. I tried switching birth controls but it wasn't working. I realized it was the birth control so I got off of it immediately but my hormones were still out of whack and the acne was still there. Instead of the whiteheads I was used to getting it was now painful cystic acne All over my cheeks and towards the corners of my lips. It left horrible scarring and very red hyperpigmentation, along with redness of the skin. I tried everything under the sun to take care my acne including: vitamin E oil, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin C, all sorts of face washes, not washing my face, and nothing was working. The past couple months all I would do is wash my face and that was it and it seemed to be working but before my period I would get lots of acne on my chin and my cheeks. I was against getting on birth control for obvious reasons so that was out of the question. I read reviews on tea tree oil and it's amazing wonderful outcomes for people. I was against using it for a long time because it had the word oil in it and vitamin E oil had made my skin a little worse so I was hesitant. Two weeks ago I bought tea tree oil and started rubbing it on my face without diluting it (I'm not very good at reading directions) but it was still doing the job. All of the small blackheads I had on my chin have disappeared as well as the ones on my cheeks. Any zits I do get are defeated by the tea tree oil and do not get any bigger. I'm so glad I finally found something to work with my horrible acne.

Pros:

- not greasy
- good acne control
- smells great
- don't need to use a lot

This works fabulously assuming you are thr right skin type. I am fairly greasy and this works wonders but for some people this may dry you out and may also cause an allergic reaction as it is pretty strong. Be sure to use sparingly, most poor reactions to Tea Tree Oil can be attributed by using in excess. Used correctly this stuff is potent. Be sure to do a test patch to ensure you will not have a bad reaction and make sure to wash your face beforehand. TTO is a strong anti-bacterial so it is best used regularly and not as a last minute treatment - try not to get into open wounds.

Pros:

none

Cons:

Made me break out worse than I ever have in my life

I tried this for a week instead of BP. I diluted it with grape seed oil, which doesn't clog pores. For the week I used it, my skin looked nice, no redness or anything, and only a couple zits as usual. But after a week started developing little bumps all over my entire face. It looks like every single pore got clogged and inflamed. I switched back to the normal regimen, but the bumps still have not gone away. I look like a monster. I even had to call in sick for work because I am so embarrassed. I HIGHLY recommend you test this product on a small patch of your face for at least a week before using.

Pros:

Has many uses.
Like the smell

Cons:

None

The best I have found is at Wmart for $8 and is Pharmaceutical grade. I use a clean eyedropper and apply straight from the bottle with my hand at night after showering about every other night. Another great use is to dilute about 2 droppers full into a small spray bottle with about 8oz of water. Shake and spray onto scalp after shampooing. It unclogs the hair follicles. I have thick fine hair and it gives it lots of body and keeps it from becoming oily.

Pros:

- As effective as using Benzoyl Peroxide.
- 100% natural oil that contains no harmful chemicals (the organic equivalent of Benzoyl Peroxide).
- Can be used neat, depending on skin types and skincare regime to increase remedial effectiveness.
- Can be added to other carrier oils as a topical remedy for other skin ailments.

Cons:

- Pure tea tree oil (cold-pressed and not adulterated) can be a little difficult to find.
- Can be a little pricey, depending on the quality and extraction of oil.
- Expiry date should be carefully observed/oxidation will occur if exposed to light and heat.
- Can be drying and may not be suitable for all skin types.
- Can take a while before any noticeable results (as with all organic oils). Patience is key.
- Smell can be strong and unpleasant for som

I would have given it a rating of 5 if not for the fact that it can be drying to my skin. More often, it has been very effective in the remedy of acne and oily skin for me when I was using it for a while. It dried out the pus-filled acne and helped heal acne wounds. It's an effective remedy as the oil is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and antiseptic. It is also commonly used therapeutically to relieve nasal congestion, sinus, minor cuts, wounds and sores. Other than lavender essential oil, tea tree oil can be used neat on the skin. However, as with all essential oils, it is not recommended that the oil be taken orally (unless specified otherwise ie food grade). Even if you do not use this oil for acne, it is a very handy oil to keep in the medicine cabinet or first aid kit. I ran out of tea tree oil a month back and have not been able to purchase a new bottle as it is currently out of stock. However, with my current acne regime (antibiotics, Shiseido products), I would definitely use tea tree oil to treat acne wounds.
