Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

Dries up oily skin
Keep shine away for awhile
Smells good
Seems to diminish acne

Cons:

Exacerbates wrinkles if you have them

I recently have had my acne come back after almost 5 years gone for seemingly no reason. (I am 26). Desperate to try anything that would work, (I have tried everything on the market in the past, antibiotics, birth control, topical creams, benzol peroxide, apple cider vinegar, except for Accutaine) I picked up some tea tree oil from the local natural food co-op after reading such positive reviews on this site. I have only been using for a week, and I can say that does seem to be helping! To use, I wet a cotton pad and add 2 to 3 drops on TTO and apply as a toner. I have been doing this morning and night. After just a few days, my complexion does look much clearer. The only con is that if you have wrinkles (I have worry lines on my forehead) the drying nature of the oil will exacerbate them. This is pretty lame, but at this point I would rather be pimple free than wrinkle free. My advice to anyone is to give this stuff a try! I read a lot of people didn't like the smell, but I love it! Hope this review helps someone!

Pros:

it seems to work
only need a little

Cons:

smell is quite strong
have to apply frequently

It smells quite strong, but after a while of use, you get used to it. I don't mind the smell anymore. I find it almost refreshing. It didn't burn for me at all. I've been using it for about 2 weeks now, and I wouldn't call it a miracle oil. It takes time for it to work. The day after I apply it on a new pimple, it becomes white (looks ready to be popped), as if the oil is speeding up the process of the growth of the pimple, but the next day, it's basically gone, or very easy to get rid of. But when my pimple is white, I feel really gross. I would recommend this product. My skin looks a lot better now. It actually seems to be working on my acne scars as well. Time will tell. But because of the number of negative reviews (some people broke out even more), I would say that the use of TTO is at your own risk. I know that people recommend diluting this product, but what I do is, I put the 100% TTO on my pimples as a spot treatment a couple of times at night, maybe during the day. I avoid doing this before I head out because I don't want to smell like TTO.

great!
I started using tea tree oil around December and i find it works really well as a spot treatment or as a toner of some sort. It may have not been some "miracle product" for me but it definitely works and I've seen improvement in my skin since I've been using this. It gets rid of spots very quickly and it has many benefits '"as it is natural'" which you could easily google. However, you have to be very careful as it is quite a potent product, so I suggest you dilute it by adding water or you could make a toner with witch hazel, green tea, water, etc. The way i use it is i wet a cotton pad with some water and i put a VERY minimal amount of tea tree oil on it '"one drop at the very most'" and rub it all over my face. Sometimes I wet a cotton swab and put, again, a very minimal amount of tea tree oil on it and dab it directly on the spot.

Pros:

It makes a great toner, the TTO feels good and really works!

Cons:

Can dry skin out.. make sure to moisturize! I put it on a cotton ball and apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing [the skin being slightly damp allows it to be applied undiluted], I let it sit for 5-10 min, rinse then apply a honey mask, let sit, rinse and moisturize. [I do this twice a day]

This is a great product! I have been dealing with acne for way too many years and love TTO, I started it almost a year ago and my skin has cleared up a lot, another great product is apple cider vinegar [I tried it before the TTO and it worked pretty well, but TTO works the best]. Although my skin isn't completely clear, it is doing a lot better than it was before I started using TTO and only gets really annoying around that time of the month [which I have noticed taking aleve a day or two before menstruation, during, and a couple days after really helps] For me, the bottom line is get it!

cant live without
This is really amazing for hormonal, cystic acne. Having PCOS makes finding products for your skin super aggravating. This has made such a difference in my skin since starting. I get mine from the Body Shop, usually when its on sale. This works great if you're allergic to benzoyl peroxide or if bp did not work. BP breaks me out so bad. Tree oil has the same purpose and its all natural, so you know exactly whats going on your skin. This also leaves my skin feeling matte and not gross and oily. I use like 2-3 drops and press it into my skin (pretty much my entire face). This also works great in preventing acne as well.

Totally agree about TTO benefits for Cystic Acne. Not sure I would recommend it as a prevention method as it could be too harsh on "normal," unaffected skin. Everyone is different, therefore as we all know, trial and error is the gauntlet all acne sufferers must run.

Amazing spot treatment - but use carefully!
100% tea tree oil is absolutely the best spot treatment I have ever come across. I dab a little on any pimples that form and they flatten days faster than they would ordinarily. However - only use as a spot treatment (at least in its undiluted form) and only use until the pimple flattens! It leaves healthy skin red and irritated, and if you continue to use it on flattened pimples, they remain very red and take longer to heal.

Pros:

natural, i actually LIKE the smell of tea tree oil!, does not stain clothing or towels, does not corrode plastic eyeglass frames the way that Benzoyl peroxide does.

Cons:

somewhat expensive, have to buy cotton balls as well, can be drying

I am reviewing the tea tree oil sold by the Body Shop which is 15% TTO. it doesn't sting (unless you have an open pimple), and when used in conjunction with the Body Shop's TTO toner ($11.00) it has cleared up my acne better and faster in two weeks than benzoyl peroxide had in...well...years! for the record, i am also on othro tri cycln low--but was still having pretty bad breakouts around my mouth. that *knock on wood* seems to be in the past.

Pros:

Stops pimples that are coming up on your skin. Prevents new pimples from forming, anf thoroughly kills bacteria on your face once you continuosly use it.

Cons:

Smell is a lil strong but goes away after a minute or two.

I used to use BP on my face, it had good results, but bleached my clothes out and sheets in bed. I quit using BP and always had a few pimples because I wasnt using anything to killthe bacteria. TTO is the perfect substitute, its all natural, and it WONT bleach your clothes. I can literally see current pimples I had before I bought the TTO oil going away. I mixed 1/4 cup of wiitch hazel with 10 drops of TTO, best toner ever, not to strong all natural and keeps skinn lookign good and the TTO is the part of my regimen that is specifically there to get rid of and prevent pimples. Everything I use is easy on my skin, so I needed something in it to stop acne. I have oily skin, and the TTO is the answer for me. Give it a try, I dont know about using full strength on your face like some mebers said, but mixing it with Witch Hazel for me, is perfect!!! Oh and I know its not just the witch hazel helpng it. I have been on my exact saem regimen for 2 months, and just added the TTO.
