Please don't use baking soda, vinegar, or lemon juice on your skin!
Baking soda gave me horrible, inflamed acne, and when I did some research, it turns out that is not at all surprising. The skin naturally has a protective"acid mantle" and healthy skin has a pH of around 4.5. Any product you use on your skin should be between about 3.5 (for something like a BHA or AHA treatment, this can be irritating, but is a valid part of some acne routines) to 5.5 for cleansers. If you disrupt the acid mantle, you create an alkaline environment that bacteria loves and damage to the skin that again, just lets bacteria party. You can read more about this here. [link edited out] For the same reasons, don't use white vinegar (apple cider may be okay) or lemon juice on your skin, as these are too acidic. Just because something is natural does not mean it is safe to apply to the delicate skin on your face!

I don't know what you have been using on your face. But, baking soda should only contain one thing, and that is itself, Sodium bicarbonate. Please do some research before spouting nonsense on a blog which can drastically affect someone's face.

DO NOT USE
As baking soda may get rid of pimples in a matter of a day and get rid of redness (as I have experienced) baking soda is one of the worst things to put on your face when it comes to PH levels and although that may not seem like a big deal because hey at least your pimple is gone, the PH levels will cause an unbalance in the skin creating its own natural oils an you'll be more likely for discoloration later on, fine wrinkles, and acne scaring. If you wish to have the same results in a matter of a day try a sugar honey and olive oil face scrub instead!

Last resort... update, so i thought i can escape the expenses but i was wrong!!!
I hope the brand i used today will work. Cant find arm&hammer. I do hope baking soda will do its magic on me. Ive been suffering from acne since highschool now im 31, couple of years ago my face became better, few pimples before my period, i was using derma t soln made in ksa where i was working. sadly cant find that here in france, since i came here 3 months ago i noticed my pores became bigger but i ignored it, plus i used different bath soap and facial cleanser bec most of the product i used in ksa were not available here. Then one day i noticed those pores are filled with blackheads, then pimples everywhere mostly on my forhead and jaw line, and they became bigger and so painful. I looked terrible now, my self esteem is 6ft under the ground. I tried benzoyl peroxide but i think it contributes to the cystic acne. When i stopped it no new cystic ones appeared. I really hope baking soda will give me my xmas wish, just to have a clear skin. I will change my rating later when i got results, but now i feel so clean after 1 wash with baking soda and it didnt give me a sting. Maybe it didnt work??? Hope not. I leave it for 5 mins im scared to wait for the sting. update... i stopped using it after 3 weeks, i didnt see any improvement in fact my condition became worse, more blackheads, yes easily to extract but noticeably larger number, and the active pimple wont dry up, so i have no choice but to go to the professionals, she prescribed me eryfluid an antibiotic topical solution and avene facial wash and cream, after almost a week, i see some improvements even others noticed it, im loving the avene products even a little bit expensive, i know, i can feel its so mild and working, the oily T zone is gone, i hope this is the start to reclaim my selfesteem, as to baking soda, atleast i gave it a try...

Avoid using baking soda on your face!!
I have breakouts all over my face, I think it has something to do with my thyroid disorder, so after doing some online research, I bought a box of this baking soda (earlier today) and decided to give it a try. First, I washed my face using an apricot scrub bar and rinsed it off thoroughly. I then poured some baking soda into my palm, along with a little water, and applied it to my face, scrubbing GENTLY! It started burning instantly, which I thought was normal... But then after about 30 seconds it started burning like crazy and become intolerable so I quickly rinsed it off with cold water... It still burned a little so I rinsed about 2 more times... OMG when I dried my face I saw that I had huge burns all over my cheeks and on my forehead... Which are oozing!!! I am so sad right now... And on top of that, my face is completely dried out... I applied some moisturizer but it was stinging... So now I am sitting down with peanut butter all over my face... Ugh!!! NEVER AGAIN WILL I PUT BAKING SODA ON MY FACE....

Please DO NOT use baking soda on your skin
Baking soda has a pH of 9, and science says that skin's optimal pH is 4.7-5.5. It's optimal because the bacteria that causes acne dies when it's in slightly acidic environment. All baking soda does is dry out your skin, increase acne in the long run, and damage the acid mantle.

Pros:

possibly dried existing acne

Cons:

PAINFUL
more blemishes
(allergic reaction?)

Apparently I have sensitive skin because my skin reacted terribly to the baking soda which I had high hopes for. I read the reviews on baking soda before trying it on my face so I already new that there would be a little irritation. But after applying (with water), my face felt more than a little irritated. A trouble area, near my chin, became puffy, inflamed, and extremely painful. I quickly washed off the baking soda with warm water but the painful feeling (like multiple slightly dulled needles) did not subside much. I then washed with cold water but still not much improvement. I looked in the mirror and the area looked terrible--dry, puffy, wrinkly, all at the same time! I only had dual action moisturizer but did not want the salicylic acid (or maybe it was benzoyl peroxide) to irritate my face. So I quickly mixed vaseline, vitamin e, and vitamin a (with crossed fingers) and slathered it all over my face. In a few minutes, my face calmed and within an hour or so, the irritated area felt fine. In the morning I woke up to a thin scabbed layer (brown with tint of red) at the irritated area. A little bit of the scab came off without leaving a scar. Hopefully, the areas will be like a chemical peel and leave nice skin behind. On the plus side, all the acne in that area has either disappeared or shrunk tremendously. Bottom line, baking soda may be only good for small spot treatments. If you have sensitive skin, please use caution!!!!

Around one year ago I used this product as a paste to remove red marks rather than pimples. Initially I noticed pores would become temporarily invisible, and it creates slightly tightening feeling of the skin, which felt very smooth. However, this effect seems to lessen as your skin adapts to the product. It's usage soon became counter-productive and ended up increasing the redness, with no permanent positive effects. While this may work as a spot treatment or in heavily diluted form, it is known for destroying the skin's acid mantle (related to it's PH value), which seems to be my case. Either way, one year later, the skin is either burnt, dried or inflammed. I suggest if you use this, be very cautious and never apply it thickly or over a large amount of skin. You were warned.

August 15, 2011

Pros:

- none

Cons:

- irritated skin
- drying
- messy

I started to use this after my cousin recommended baking soda since it worked for some of her friends so i have been using it for a little over a month. So far there are no differences in my acne's condition or appearance so i feel like i wasted my time and i have lost all my patience. There were no pros but there were some cons. I have dry skin so this made my skin dryer. So i don't recommend it for dry skin or combination/dry skin. It also tickled/stung my face when ever i used it so i don't recommed it for sensitive skin. Also the whole process was kind of messy. I would put a few drops of water in on the baking soda and then would mix it together until it would become a paste. It was really messy and inconvieniant. As usual i recommend you to try all the products and do all the research you can to help cure your acne and even though this didnt work for me it could work for you. Good Luck on your Acne Journey! <3
