How To Find A Derm Who Will Prescribe Spironolactone In The Uk?

Hi I live in Cambridge, UK and would like to find a dermatologist who would consider prescribing me Spironolactone. Any tips on how to go about this?

I don't really understand the private health care system here. My GP is currently trying me on Marevelon, a BCP. It sounded like if that doesn't work (and so far, it's not) then he'd try me on antibiotics next. I don't think the NHS is big on Spiro, so I'd like to go private.

Thanks for any pointers.

Hi, in my opinion...I would bypass your local GP and make an appointment with a private derm (if you can)....I'm using roaccutane (not Spironolactone!) but have found that most local GP's will always try the cheapest treatment method first if using NHS, which is why antibiotics/creams are normally the first thing they will try...I would try to google "dermatologist near Cambridge" which should bring up a list of dermatologists near your area...most private Derm's also have treatment rooms for private appointments at local hospitals (which is where I saw my dermatologist). The only downside is the cost.....a first appointment cost me 180 but atleast you know you can talk to them about the Spironolactone treatment. The good thing is you wont have to wait...I got my first appointment within 2 weeks and could have been sooner if the dermatologist wasnt on holiday.....best wishes for your treatment...

EDIT:

Just did a quick google for you.....might be worth trying one of these to see if you can get in a private appointment! (self funding patient) All these have dermatology departments...so should also accept "private" appointments with a dermatologist..

I saw a private derm, who then referred me to an NHS derm who specialises in acne.

She is based in N Yorkshire so a little too far for you.

I had tried everything bar roaccutane, with no real results. My main issue was too much oil. The spironolactone has worked wonders for me so far.

Can you ask your GP for a referral to a derm on NHS? I believe that nowadays you can choose the location and/or consultant so with a bit of research you could make a good choice and avoid paying privately..

Can I ask who your dermatologist is? I live near North Yorkshire and really want to try spironolactone, I have really stubborn hormonal acne along my jawline that will not budge!
Many thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to chip in because I'm in the UK and currently on Spironolactone. I got it from an NHS consultant dermatologist so if you can get your GP to refer you to the hospital dermatology department you can ask about it there. I thought I was going to have loads of trouble convincing them to prescribe it to me but they totally agreed with me that my acne was hormonal and were quite happy to let me try it. Worth going armed with a bit of research I think. I took this medicine assessment from a Lancashire NHS trust and this American journal article on its efficacy in post-teenage female acne with me to the appointment and I think that really helped. But like I say, they didn't really need much convincing in the end! It is prescribed on the NHS, just not as a first port of call unless you ask for it I think. It's cheaper for them than isotretinoin so that always works in our favour as well.

Good luck!
