I've used it for two weeks now and I cleared me up a lot, but now I've broken out :wall: And it doesn't seem to help all that much with my red marks.

..... :doubt:

i just ordered some of the cleanser online. here's my question: i know you're supposed to wear sunscreen when you use this stuff, but sunscreen always breaks me out. i don't get a lot of sun exposure, just walking to and from class pretty much (about a half hour total a day). should i still be wearing sunscreen?

Thanks to those of you who responded!!

I'll try to answer everyone's inquiries:

Stardancer: "SOunds like a lot of people are having problems with the toner? Maybe that could be the culprit?"

--> Might be. Everything was going relatively well till i started the toner, except I was really oily and was starting to break out. i WAS starting to break out before starting it, so whether or not the toner made it worse, its hard to tell.

Wynne: "It looks like you're going overkill on glycolic acid. Just pick one product and use it once a day at first."

-->I think I may just do that. back off a bit. maybe just use the cleanser only and my sunscreen and see how it goes.

Wynne: "How long have you used the glycolic acid? " and Stardancer: ""Can you give more specifics about your current regimen? Maybe we can narrow it to something. "

-->Started AG cleanser on 9/24; Started AH Souffle on 9/27; 10/1 small breakout on nose; 10/5 larger breakout on forehead; 10/6 started toner

So you all think i should back off a bit? my skin is totally freaking out. i think im gonna stop the Alpha Hydrox, as it burned like hell when i put it on at night, and i started it just 3 days after the cleanser, so i never got to see how that worked on its own. I think i'll also stop the toner too for now. maybe later i can phase in the other 2 products again on a limited basis...but just gonna do the cleanser only for now and see if my skin calms down a bit. What do you all think?

Guys,

I could cry. My face is breaking out worse than when I was a teenager!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am using:

AM: AG cleaser, then AG toner, then cetaphil spf 15 then Physician formula makeup

PM: AG cleanser, AG toner and alpha hydrox souffle.

My face looks like the surface of the moon. So many active whiteheads and bumps. Greasy. Absolutely hideous. Aweful aweful aweful.

I want to stay with it in hopes that this breakout will clear up and leave me with nice skin, but it doesnt seem to be getting better. just breaking out more and more. this is so embarrasing! what should i do???

I also had one of the worst breakouts of my life last year when I used cetaphil spf 15. I now refuse to use anything that is Cetaphil. The cleanser leaves a white film on my face

Lauren -

I would back off till it calms down a little bit. It could still be an IB for starting glycolic acid. It took a month for me to see major clearing - ugh and then I had a major breakout this weekend when I added in Walgreen's AHA. Still trying to recover from that.

As for the Cetaphil being the culprit, as Molly suggested, I seem to remember that you have used Cetaphil even before this? It seems unlikely - sounds to me like you are still experiencing and IB. Hope it all calms down soon.

Most glycolic products give me an inital breakout too but they usually subside within a week or two. Sometimes initial breakout can last for 3 weeks to a month so anybody having this problem just stick with it and see how it goes. If your IB continues or gets worse maybe you should stop it because even if the glycolic product is helping with the marks having more spots appear may just be leaving more ones which isn't helpful to the situation one bit.

i have to agree with the above

cetaphil = bad

and i think the toner is bad because it has alcohol in it, it smells like oxy, im not surprised i got the same results

Yes I was on the regimen for 4 months. Using dan's BP, Cetaphil cleanser, moisturizer and SPF moisturizer. Things had cleared up well with all that. So for me I dont think the Cetaphil SPF would be causing the problem. I do intend to stick with Alpha hydroxy stuff because if I can get thru this and it all turns out for the best, then I'll have found my solution to clear skin without BP!

I just want to do this right, and yes maybe I was doing overkill on products. I noticed that last night, I did not use the souffle, and this morning my zits were really red and looked aweful. The thing when I used the souffle, as much as it hurt when I put it on, in the morning, at least my spots had calmed down and things looked better in the morning.

So should I kind of start from scratch here? ie just use the cleanser for a while, then add other things in? or just stay with what I've been doing in hopes that my skin will power thru it and get used to everything? Or use everything but less often?

I would say at this point, just use less often, especially the souffle. I like it too, but it can be irritating. Maybe every third day? And I would still say stop the toner and use something that gets better reviews, like Neutrogena Pore Refining. Still has AHA but the amount of alcohol in it is VERY minimal.

I think I'll try to use up the bottle of the cleanser, which should be long enough to see the full effects of it. I'm going to just use it alone I think, with the cetaphil spf during the day. i dont like the idea of toner...but i looked up the pore refining. curious has anyone used the pore refining wash? it seems to get great reviews too and also has alpha hydroxy in it. just curious if that might be milder (for the future).

i went to both cvs and walgreens and couldn't find any aqua glycolic products. i went on the website and it says "Aqua GlycolicA products are available at your local pharmacy behind the pharmacy counter."

does this mean i have to ask a pharmacist for the products? or should i just try going to walmart and seeing if they have it on their shelves?

Yeah, "behind the counter" means you have to ask the pharmacist for it, but you still don't need a prescription for it. I'm not a Walmart person, so I don't know much about that option.

hey, i think maybe my question got lost in the discussion here, so let me just restate it really quick: how much sun exposure means that i should wear a sunscreen while using this product?

A vaguely accurate, specific answer to that question would really require knowing your exact skin tone, your general ancestry, your lattitude, the weather there, whether there are any skin or related cancer genes in you lineage . . . a theoretical discussion about adequate versus optimum intakes of Vitamin D, and . . . I think . . . a couple of equations from my text book that now lives a couple hundred miles away. My smartass-ness is meant to be humorous, not mean.

Personally, with my skin tones, where I live, and all that, I tend to burn in 10-30 minutes outside unprotected depending on the weather and season. (Pre-AHA figures; I haven't yet discovered my UV tolerance with dollops of AHA thrown into the equation). If there's even the slightest chance I'll be outside longer than 15 minutes in a day, I wear sunscreen. I basically wear it automatically; the 15 minutes is if my skin feels too sensitive to wear sunscreen that day. (It takes me about 20-25 minutes to walk to most buildings on campus.)

The most practical suggestion I can think of is to continue what you're doing now. If you accidentally burn, start wearing sunscreen if you'll be outside for a time period, maybe, 10 minutes shorter than the span it took you to burn.

anyone find that AG isnt strong enough of a cleaner? I'm thinking of fitting a wash during the middle of the day between the AG night and morning because i seem to be getting a lot of whiteheads, some that lead to pimples

Yes ask the pharmacist and if you dont find it then order from amazon.

I wouldnt advice doing that. Washing more than twice a day can aggrevate acne and make it worse especially if you are already acne prone. I recommend just adding in a leave on product, what leave on product I dont know. I made my own thread asking for help

Washing 3x a day.... =no.. noo :naughty:

I wash 3 times a day but dont like to, and heres why:

I wash in the AM with the AG then put on my makeup for work. When I get home from work, I want to get the makeup off ASAP and give my skin time to breathe, so i wash with plain dove soap. I dont want to have to wear makeup at all, but until my skin heals up and looks normal, i just am not comfortable going "naked" in public. Then wash again in the PM.

Update, my skin still looks like absolute crap, but maybe starting to heal a bit. I have stopped the toner and souffle for now. Right now my regimen is:

AM: AG cleanser, cetaphil SPF moisture, Physicians mineral makeup

after work: wash off makeup with Dove

PM: AG cleanser, cetaphil moisture when/if needed

I asked the pharmacist at Wal-Mart today about A.G. and she actually snickered and said, "Um face washes are over in cosmetics." I told her I knew what I was talking about and made her look for it. She told me a different pharmacy may be able to order it for me. I didn't ask why SHE couldn't order it for me.

UGH, sorry, just don't like being treated like an idiot!

I know a lot of people like Dove to wash their face, but it really isn't a gentle cleanser, despite saying it has moisturizer in it. Dove is a great soap, but very drying to the skin on your face. I washed my face with it for years before I realized that it was not doing good things for my skin. It may not be the same for you, but with what your currently going through, I would switch to something more gentle like Ponds if you are just looking to remove make up.
